Title: Top 5 Ways to Get Into the Holiday Spirit | Guest: Paul Campbell
Christmas Countdown'

My guest today is Kyle Poehls. He is a Marine Corps veteran whose life took a dramatic turn after surviving two comas during his military service. Born in 1985, he found his passion for writing in the final years of his service, and despite facing numerous seizures and another coma just before his planned exit, he persevered. In March of 2017, he began crafting “From Nicholas to Christmas”, a tale about the early life of Santa Claus. Today, with a reinvigorated outlook on life, he embodies the belief that every day should be lived as if it were the last.

In today’s episode Kyle walks us through his journey, and how his severe health scares inspired him to take a chance and get his book out into the world. It’s a powerful story that you won’t want to miss! We also talk about our favorite movies, music and more. It’s a conversation that ranges from children’s stories to Die Hard (Yes we think it’s a Christmas movie, NO, we are not going to rehash all the arguments) to Home Alone 2 and the best character in that movie (New York City).

My past couple of guests have both served in the military. After my conversation with Kyle, I reflect a few moments on the Pearl Harbor anniverary, the fear of war, and the necessity to treat each other with kindness and human dignity.

On this episode we discuss Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, a brand new Christmas film about the people left behind while everyone else is off on their own holiday adventures. And to help us break it all down, we welcome back Johnny-5, The Human Robot!

The Holdovers is all about folks dealing with the loneliness of the holiday season however they can: Drinking, watching game shows, wandering around at night, crashing Christmas parties. Y’know, general introvert behavior. But there’s so much more to it than that. It’s really something special.

We’ll dig into all that, plus the McRib being back, reminisce about our own holdover Christmases, and more! (Also, blanket spoiler warning here. We discuss it all, and recommend you see this one first. But you can do what you want, I’m not your dad.)

What’s up, dudes? Ed Daly, author of The Christmas Book: The Ultimate Guide to Your Favorite Holiday, and I take a dive into a Showtime TV show. It’s Gary Shandling’s Christmas Show!

After a brief monologue, Gary hosts a big Christmas party for his friends and family. His mother arrives and gifts him his father’s old pocket watch. One by one, guests begin to leave until Gary is left alone. As he cleans up, he discovers the watch is missing! In a panic, he heads to his sister’s place to confront her boyfriend about taking the watch. Of course, he vehemently denies taking it. On his way back home, he meets his mother who confesses to taking the watch back in a moment of weakness and sentimentality. Unfortunately, Santa Claus breaks up the emotional moment telling Gary that he slipped down his chimney and twisted his ankle. Gary wishes for a triumphant success of a Christmas party, which Santa obliges. Gary then offers to finish delivering presents.

Popcorn garland? Check. Skating snowman? Weird, but yes. Tom Petty in a Christmas sweater and part of a vocal ensemble? Only because Springsteen wouldn’t wear one! So grab your pocket watch, strap yourself into your chair, and turn the place upside down for this episode about Gary Shandling’s Christmas Show!

The Festive Fans embark on their plan to spread Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men this episode as they journey to Mother Russia.  It’s a sincere effort to try to find some Christmas spirit in the former Soviet nation.  We watch a movie filled with class warfare, occultism, and pick pockets.  It is set before the Bolshevik Revolution, so you will see elements of the holiday depicted in the stunning surroundings.  St. Petersburg is gorgeous in 1900 and we get a glimpse at how the aristocrats and the servants celebrate and, trust us, you’ll want to be at the goth carnival with the peasantry.  Plus, we listen to an updated Christmas song based on a poem from 1905, but it sure doesn’t sound like it.  So don’t say Nyet, strap on your skates and join us as we go dashing through the snow.
