Sleighing Stereotypes: The “Santa Camp” Documentary Review with special guest, Joe The Christmas Aficionado

Christmas Cousins

And we’re back! On this episode, Nikki returns to help Joe and Bradford break down Disney’s most recent holiday offering: The Naughty Nine!

On Christmas morning, Andy discovers Santa did not bring him the video game console he asked for. Realizing he’s been put on the naughty list, Andy enlists the help of seven kids with expert skills (and one adult who’s definitely not Chris Pratt) to fly to the North Pole and steal back the Christmas gifts they rightly deserve. So it’s Ocean’s Eleven but with kids. Cool. Great.

Also in this episode, Joe pitches his own idea for a Christmas kids movie, Bradford explains the distinction between a horse-cop and a cop-horse, and Nikki regrets ever returning to this stupid podcast.

42 weeks / 294 days until Christmas! (“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” Song Battle)

Chrismas Morning

Don’t cry for us Argentina, you have delivered on a very meaty holiday.  And we are not just talking about the ox tongue and tuna sauce at the Asado.   Our first tour stop in South America really delivers its fireworks — both on and off the screen.  La Noche Magica is a film that may seem dark and unsettling, but it is what Mark has described as a “must see”.  The complicated plot finds a thief mistaken for Santa on Christmas Eve who becomes intrigued with the family he is robbing.  He first stumbles upon the wife’s lover, hiding on the balcony.  Next, he walks into an unfortunate love triangle between a fussy collector, his beautiful wife, and the best man at their wedding.  In the midst of this serious storytelling and social reflection, there are also comic moments and black humor to relieve the suspense and to help grapple with the heady subject matter being tackled in this arty Christmas movie   All is not what appears to be, including Nicola and his mission. This is not your conventional festive film but hold on to your red hat for a provocative and colorful ride,

Next, we explore the traditional customs of Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) with an hourly detail of the evening’s events, both the dinner and the Sobremesa.  The all-night party continues with a festive display of fireworks, globitos, and the arrival of Bom Velhinho.  If you can’t make it, at least you can listen to “Ven a Mi Casa Esta Navidad”, which reflects the yearning we all have for a sense of belonging and togetherness during the holiday season. The song is a reminder that if can’t be home, at least you can “Come to My House this Christmas”.

What’s up, dudes? There are a lot of classic Christmas commercials! They’ve shaped our perception of the Christmas season since we were little. Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax and Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette join me live to watch some lesser known ‘80s Christmas commercials!

Cool Spot rides a toy fire truck in a 1988 7Up commercial. Young versions of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lea Thompson, and Elizabeth Shue regale us with carols in a 1982 Burger King commercial. Oh yeah, McDonald’s sued Burger King because of it as well. Meanwhile, Joey is making homemade garland with a needle and thread and Kix cereal. He’s snacking too!

Artists send holiday wishes to “Blue Christmas” by Elvis in an MTV commercial. The Dillard patriarch cradles his granddaughter in a cozy Christmas scene. Then a choir sings, “Hello, Taco Bell!” in their best Handel impression. A Radio Shack announcer describes an inordinate amount of radio variations and Woolworth shows children playing with toys.

Santa sleds on a Norelco razor top while a woman looks through her Hallmark cards and blushes at the one ‘the hunk’ sent her. A grandpa helps his grandson fall asleep via phone and AT&T’s great service. The Muppets unexpectedly show up with Polaroids as well. Finally an ‘80s robot shills for Toys R Us, Tom Bosley talks tools for Sears, and Pizza Hut reminds us how amazing their pan pizzas are!

Catchy jingles? Check. Cheesy, saccharine messages? Of course. Muppet shenanigans? Definitely! So grab your razor, head to Burger King and enjoy this episode on lesser known ‘80s Christmas commercials!

I’m here, you’re here, let’s get started…

We begin with the joke, which is a first, usually it’s in the middle of the show, so don’t let it disorientate you, and we follow it up with The Quiz.

Then Bob is here with Do You Hear What I Hear and he’s looking at why us Brits say Lift instead of Elevator (aside from the fact it saves us 3 syllables).

Next up is the return of What The Dickens, and I talk about why Scrooge is called Scrooge and Marley is called Marley, and also is it possible for the streets of London to be both frosty and foggy.

Then it’s a look at A New York Christmas to Remember.  This was a televised Christmas carol church service in which Regis Philbin read out the nativity story accompanied by a load of puppets created by Jim Henson’s workshop.  They’re not muppets, but it’s quite spellbinding.
You can watch it here:

After that, Bob is back with Spread A Smile of Joy, and this time he’s recommending you have a listen to The Story Corps Podcast season 8 which shares a load of stories about people doing nice deeds.

Then it’s Christmas All Over The World and we look at the why it’s a tradition to take a walk among the tombstones on Christmas Eve in Finland.

This episode’s recommendation is Petty Crimes podcast, and it’s lots of fun.

What’s up, dudes? Adam Pope from Wizards! The Podcast Guide to Comics and The Retro Network (Geekster) is here to talk about the unbelievable phenomenon that was Teddy Ruxpin! It’s Ken Forsse’s terrific talking teddy bear…no, Illiop! In fact, there was a even a special presentation book with matching Santa outfit called “Teddy Ruxpin’s Christmas!”

In the land of Grundo, the anthropomorphic bear Teddy Ruxpin and his Octopede friend Grubby help us earthlings to celebrate Christmas. They immediately launch into a medley of carols: “Here we Come A’Wassaling”, “Deck the Halls”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, and “Good King Wenceslas.” Newton Gimmick and friends join up with the duo, and the gang sing a special Grundo version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Grubby jokes of running out legs while keeping track of days in the song, and Gimmick begins a medley of “Carol of the Bells” and “Jingle Bells.”

Ever the comedian, Grubby complains his ears are still ringing. Meanwhile, the friends are joined by another group of carolers. They perform “O Christmas Tree” and Gimmick subsequently suggests that Teddy and Grubby tell the story of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The choir bids us farewell singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

Cassettes? Check. Books? Need ‘em. Obligatory Santa outfit and carol sing? For sure! So grab your Illiop, call your Octopede friend, and sing along with this Teddy Ruxpin Christmas episode!

This sweet treat can be found in the candy dishes of many grandma’s homes. Its origin has been lost to history but the mechanism used for this candy was created in America. The creator of this machine may be the bane of many children. The candy’s extremely brittle consistency makes it easy to break off a piece for sharing.
