Title: June 21st – 187 Days/26 Weeks Until Christmas
Chrismas Morning

Welcome to episode 83 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I’ll be talking about Yoshiyas Ueda and Swing West’s “Electric Guitar Christmas.”

I keep saying I’m a sucker for these flexi-discs. Whether it’s a sonojournal, a promotional flexi, a musical greeting card, or a cardboard postcard, I have a hard time passing on them when they show up for sale. They’re poorly documented overall, and a lot of them are hidden gems, containing great music from unknown artists. I’ve been lucky enough to get some of the most sought-after flexis and I look forward to sharing more of them with you.

I was pretty fascinated with Swing West, especially as I learned more about them and how so many members of the band went on to do bigger and better things. While those individuals would have a huge influence on the Japanese recording industry on their own, Swing West is mostly forgotten today, which is a shame considering how great their music was, and how innovative and adventurous some of their arrangements were. While there isn’t much of their music online, I did find a video for Masayuki Yuhara’s version of “Ame no Ballad,” which I’ve posted below.

Masayuki Yuhara – “Ame no Ballad” – 1971

I hope you enjoyed learning about Swing West and their Christmas music. Join me on the 25th when I talk about the 1964 compilation, “Golden Christmas Party.” I’ve mentioned before how I’ve been lucky enough to find a few albums that my friend Santa-ro didn’t previously know about. This is one of those and the bulk of the music on it was never included anywhere else. It’s a real treat, and you’re sure to enjoy it.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Christmas Countdown'

Ani-May strikes back for one last hurrah this week! Our pal Dr. Nick returns for this double-length episode to explain the myriad ins and outs of the Mobile Suit Gundam universe as we discuss the 1998 feature film Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz!

Earth is about to be invaded by one of its colonies on Christmas Eve, right after the planet decided to rid itself of its protecting force of giant mech suits. Our intrepid team must retrieve the suits before they crash into the sun, and hope they’re not to late to save Queen Relena and the planet (and Christmas!) before it can be conquered by pint-sized dictator Mariemaia.

If none of that made any sense to you, don’t worry! Nick brought charts and graphs (which can be found at christmascreeps.com) to explain everything—and I do mean EVERYTHING—you need to know. And if that’s not enough, well then there’s more than enough Gundam media out there to help you out. So strap yourselves in for one last blast of Ani-May madness!

Tis the Podcast

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! We hope all the dads out there had a wonderful father’s day, and we hope all of our American listeners are taking some time this long weekend to reflect on the real meaning and history of Juneteenth as you enjoy your extra day off!

While Julia may still be enjoying a fabulous Disney World vacation with her family, Anthony and Thom decided to record solo to ensure that y’all didn’t go another week without a new episode!

What do Pirates of the Pancreas, Terminator-esque alien snakes, lightsabers dropped perfectly vertically, and uncut versions of “Miracle on 34th Street” all have in common? Christmas celebrations at the Smith-Sanchez house! That’s right! This week, Thom and Anthony are delving into the holiday episodes of the extremely popular – and extremely adult – cartoon, “Rick and Morty“!

For those who want to follow along at home, the episodes covered this week are:

  • Season 1 – Episode 3 – Anatomy Park
  • Season 4 – Episode 5 – Rattlestar Ricklactica
  • Season 6 – Episode 10 – Ricktional Mortpoon’s Rickmas Mortcation

This is an episode that’s full of laughs, quotes, and definite adult content, so you most-definitely want to listen to this one without any young children present! As for what Anthony and Thom think of “Rick and Morty” in general? You’ll just have to tune in to find out – though the answer may surprise you!

Also discussed this episode: “Harry Potter” camp, A.I., Disney’s live action remake of “The Little Mermaid“, and much, much more! So, settle in beside the air conditioning to simulate those cool Ber-Month evenings, relax, and enjoy this fun installment of “Tis the Podcast“! And, as always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! Wubalubadubdub! ❤️ 🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🔔🚂 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells and and Santa Ambassador Matt Spaulding from  North Pole Radio with me to talk all about the hodgepodge—smorgasbord, if you like—1982 Christmas special “A Disney Christmas Gift!” The special was made to distract from the fact that Disney had to delay the release of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.”

The special is a compilation of Disney animated shorts, feature films, and live footage from Disneyland which is used to tie it all together. The intro and outro sequences are scored to the song “On Christmas Morning“, and display Christmas at Disneyland.  The special was nominated for a 1984 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour).

Mickey in a Santa suit? Check. Classic animated shorts? Yup. Scenes from Disney movies that have little or nothing to do with Christmas? Definitely! So grab your shadow, pull the sword out of the stone, and fly into this episode about “A Disney Christmas Gift!”

Hello you beautiful people.
It’s another jam packed episode with loads of Christmas for your lovely ears.

First up it’s The Quiz.  10 questions, 10 answers and we’re done.

Then Bob Baker our podcast barman talks about the word Lorry.
Try saying “Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry” 5 times fast.

Then we have another story from the life and times of the real St Nicholas expertly read by Scott Newman.
Check out Scott on Tinsel Tunes:

Then Bob is back with Christmas Everyday with an idea from Benji Pearson.  Why not spread some festive cheer every 25th of the month on social media.
If you haven’t listened to Bob’s great podcast Festive Foreign Film Fans, you can check it out here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then thanks to a suggestion from Ty Virgin we discuss Christmas drinks.  I’m sure there will be one or two in here that you’re not familiar with.  Why not give them a try to get some festive spirits in your belly.

This episode’s recommendation is from Benji Pearson. His son, Joseph, recorded a podcast episode as part of a school project.  In the episode he talks about the Dolly Parton album 9 to 5.  It’s really interesting and definitely worth your time,

Title: Christmas Can Be Murder: The Cozy Christmas Book Club Group Discussion
A Cozy Christmas'

What’s up, dudes? It’s an episode so big I had to have 2 sets of guests! Yes, it’s the space cop BraveStarr! I’ve got 3 new members joining my BraveStarr club: AA and CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night, and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas! Everyone wanted to talk a BraveStarr Christmas and “Tex’s Terrible Night!”

In this 1987 Filmation version of “A Christmas Carol,” Marshall BraveStarr and his deputy 30-30 leave Fort Kerium unattended at Christmas. When Stampede and Tex-Hex plan to exploit the lawmen’s absence with an attack, Shaman takes action Charles Dickens-style!

Shaman magically transports Tex-Hex from his bed to the past! Tex is forced to relive leaving his love Ursula, double crossing McBride,  (almost?) dying in a crash, and being reconstituted as a sorcerous bandit.

Shaman then shows Tex the present. Evidently Ursula and her new beau are heading to Fort Kerium for Christmas! The future, in typical Dickensian fashion, is bleak and continues without Tex leading his gang. Yes, the grizzled outlaw sees and embraces his own tombstone!

Tex rediscovers a bit of his humanity as he sabotages his master’s plan to attack on Christmas Day. The town is saved, as is his long lost love!

This one’s got it all! Well, except all the ghosts… Rotoscoping? Check. Fewer animation frames per second? Yup. Stereotypical cowboy junk? Definitely! So grab your blaster, hop on your quasi-anthropomorphic steed, and ride into this episode all about a BraveStarr Christmas and  “Tex’s Terrible Night!”

This is our first episode of Festive Foreign Film Fans.  Just the name is a mouthful — imagine what the show is like.  Bob and Mark travel to France to review the French film Les nouvelles aventures d’Aladin.  Neither one speaks the language or has even travelled to the country (first mistake), so they offer great introspection.  They also play a French Christmas song, sung by a non-French singer (second mistake) and discuss customs they know nothing about.  You may not think this is a great investment of your time, but sometimes you need légumes when you can’t have fromage.  So, step out of your traditions and communities, and join us as we celebrate with a little Midwestern émerveiller and éblouissant!

Continuing with the look into Elf, Robert’s joined by Todd Killian from Christmas Clatter to talk about the movie… along with some other Christmas movies… along with some other traditions related to Christmas… and having a more laidback conversation.

The two os us talk about some of our favorite moments, how the third act is still the most random part of the movie and how much Elf has become both of our personal favorites. We also look into our personal favorite elves, some of our other Christmas classics and why the movie has had the impact it does with the public. Does Elf already have the same cult status as A Christmas Story or has it passed beyond that? Find out before Robert returns with the 2nd part of the Elf deep dive
