Total Christmas

It’s episode 81 and it’s more Christmas than one person can handle.

First up we have the return of the Yule Log.  This one is a bit different because the yule log itself is right on the periphery.  It features Terry Crews, actor and former NFL player painting a lovely Christmas picture.
It’s worth a look:

Then Bob Baker is here with Do You Here What I Hear and Bob is very interested in ‘snogging’,

Then it’s this episode’s version of A Christmas Carol.  This is an episode of Xena Warrior Princess called A Solstice Carol.  Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle teach a mean old king the true meaning of Christmas.
Watch it here:

Then it’s Christmas Everyday and Bob suggests lotto scratch cards are the way to keep feeling festive all year long.

Next up is another story of the Real Life St Nicholas read by the host of Tinsel Tunes and Christmas Morning Podcast, Scott Newman.
Check out the latest episode of Tinsel Tunes:

Then it’s the Quiz.  See if you can beat my score of 8.

This episode’s recommendation is Excuse Me, That’s Illegal.  It’s a true crime podcast that looks at some of the less severe crimes.  It’s funny and worth a listen.

In today’s episode, Christmas is going to the dogs… and a few cats!

My guest is cozy mystery author and professional cat rescuer M. R. Dimond. She writes the Black Orchids Enterprises mystery series, and the first two books take place at Christmas time. We chat about her writing process, her time as a cat rescuer, and the joy of writing Christmas books. Then in the second half of the episode, we also talk about her favorite Christmas things! You won’t believe what Christmas movie she talks about here.

I also share some dog-related cozy news and recommend some great books that feature Christmas and Dogs.

A Cozy Christmas'

What’s up, dudes? It’s a prog rock Christmas! Yes, we’re talking Chris Squire and Alan White’s “Run with the Fox!” This single along with B-side “Return of the Fox” was recorded and released in 1981 on Atlantic Records. The song is a masterclass on pedal point, syncopation, and suspended chords, with a driving beat and occasional mixed meter just to keep things interesting.

Chris Squire and Alan White played bass and drums respectively for progressive rock band Yes, and co-wrote the Christmas song with King Crimson lyricist Peter Sinfield. How? You ask. Well, Yes frontman Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman had left the group in 1980, replaced by Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn from The Buggles. After an album and tour, Yes disbanded in ‘81 and Squire and White continued to work together, composing “Return of the Fox” with Squire on vocals. Naturally it got a lot of airplay through the ‘80s and early ‘90s during the Christmas season.

Synths? Check. Pedal tones? Yup. Obscure metaphoric lyrics? Definitely! So grab your bass, call your backup choir, and run with this episode!

What’s up, dudes?  I pity the fool who misses this episode all about the toughest man in the world! Yes, Bradley Lyndon from Million Monkey Theater joins me to talk all about the team up between Mr. T and Emmanuel Lewis in this wacky 1984 special!

Mr. T stars as Benny, a Salvation Army-style Santa  who meets a young latch-key kid, played by Emmanuel Lewis of TV’s Webster, who seems to have lost his Christmas spirit. Mr. T sets out to change Billy’s mind, taking him around the city to all the touristy must see spots! First up is FAO Schwartz, where    David Copperfield gives him an ‘80s cigarette smoke filled magic lesson. There’s even an Olympic figure skater routine at Rockefeller Center! The duo then proceed to Radio City Music Hall, where Maureen McGovern serenades them with Christmas songs. In typical kid fashion, Webster falls asleep watching a rehearsal and consequently imagines himself as one of the toy soldiers in the Rockettes’ Christmas Show. Oh yeah, he also meets Willie Tyler and his dummy Lester. Naturally, in the big holiday  finale, he’s moved to realize the true meaning of Christmas, before being reunited with his workaholic parents.

This one’s got it all! ‘80s icons? Check. Former variety show stars? Yup. The true meaning of Christmas? As only Mr. T could tell it! So grab your gold chains, pack your trick quarter and cigarettes, and take an incredibly expensive carriage ride to this episode!

Welcome to episode 80 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I’ll be talking about Lisa Ono’s 2004 album, “Boas Festas 2 – Feliz Natal.”

This is coming out a lot sooner than normal after my last episode. Despite all the setbacks I’ve been facing over the past few months, I wanted to make sure I got both episodes out this month. I’m hoping things calm down and I’m able to get back to a more regular release schedule.

As I said last time, I really hope you enjoyed Lisa Ono’s music as much as I have. Every once in a while when I’m preparing for an episode, after hitting play on an album for the 15th time, I’ll be ready to move on to something else. As much as I’ve listened to both of these CD’s this month, I never grew tired of them.

Be sure to join me next month for a pair of great albums. Up first is Hiro Tsunoda’s “Ballad X’mas” from 1991, along with a couple Christmas singles. Then join me on the 25th for one of the oldest Japanese LP’s I have, “Blue Christmas – Trumpet Mood Collection,” by Keiichiro Ebihara and His Lobsters from 1959. They’re both a lot of fun and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Welcome to episode 79 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I’ll be talking about Lisa Ono’s album, “Boas Festas,” from 2000.

Over the past three years, I’ve pointed out multiple times that I don’t speak Japanese and have, therefore, apologized for some of my pronunciations. This time, I have to point out that I don’t speak Portuguese, so if my friend Ernesto is listening, I’m sorry for mangling some of the names. That said, I can’t overstate how thrilled I was to discover Lisa Ono’s music. Her Christmas CD’s have become two of my favorites and are now permanent parts of my regular Christmas music playlist.

I hope you enjoyed this first episode about Lisa Ono. It’s been hectic the past few months and I’m way behind schedule, but I’ll be getting the next one out as soon as I can. Be sure to tune back in as I wrap up my discussion about Lisa Ono’s life and career, and give a brief history about Bossa Nova music in general..

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.
