Closer to Christmas

We made it to the ‘Ber months! In today’s episode of a Cozy Christmas Podcast, I’ll tell you the story of a saint I learned about who LITERALLY saved Christmas. We’ll find out about St. Aphrodisius, and his connection to Christmas, and what lessons we can learn from his life. And then I read you another old, cozy, Christmas story called “The Tell-Tale Tile” by Olive Thorne Miller. Now, don’t let the title’s allusion to an Edgar Allan Poe story frighten you – this story is definetly a cozy one! It tells the story of old Miss Bennett, who gives out of her poverty to a neighbor. What impact will that have on her, especially as she fears going to the poor house? Well, tune in to find out!

Title: The Saint Who Saved Christmas
A Cozy Christmas'

PARENTAL WARNING: DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE WITH CHILDREN PRESENT!

What’s up, dudes? It’s one of the bleakest Christmas movies ever made—and Disney apparently decided dead parents, unemployment, bank robberies, and existential despair were exactly what kids needed for Christmas! Yes, it’s “One Magic Christmas!” I’ve got Santa Ambassador Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio, and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa here to discuss it.

In this 1985 film, Ginny Grainger is a financially struggling mom who has completely lost her Christmas spirit. Her husband Jack is unemployed, the family has to move out of their company-owned house, and Ginny is working nights at the grocery store while her kids, Cal and Abbie, are still desperately trying to enjoy Christmas. Enter Gideon, a mysterious Christmas angel who apparently decides the best way to restore Ginny’s faith is through some good old-fashioned Yuletide psychological trauma. After Abbie mails a letter to Santa, a desperate bank robber shoots Jack during a robbery, kidnaps the kids, and drives them off a bridge. Merry Christmas from Walt Disney Pictures, everybody!

Luckily, Gideon gives Ginny the chance to travel to the North Pole, where she meets Santa Claus himself and retrieves Abbie’s letter. Ginny finally understands what Christmas—and her family—really mean to her, and some convenient Christmas magic rewinds the nightmare. Jack is alive, the kids are safe, Ginny embraces the season, and Santa even leaves Jack the bicycle he’d wanted when he was a kid.

Christmas angel orchestrating an elaborate supernatural intervention? Yup. Children plunging into an icy river? Got it. Harry Dean Stanton lurking around town with a harmonica like the Ghost of Christmas Existential Crisis? Absolutely! So mail your letter to Santa, hold your family close, and maybe keep Dad FAR away from the bank as we rediscover the Christmas spirit with “One Magic Christmas!”

Closer to Christmas

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

It seems remarkable that after four years of traveling the world in search of Christmas, the Festive Fans hadn’t been to Wales yet.  This is especially strange since Wale’s own famed poet, Dylan Thomas, wrote one of the most beloved celebrations of childhood Christmas ever written, the epic poem A Child’s Christmas in Wales.  While we were wandering across continents, Wales—a country full of music, fireplaces, and cozy stone cottages—has been patiently waiting for us to discover it.

Perhaps we assumed Wales was too obvious. Perhaps we were distracted by countries with stranger food, warmer weather, or more unique Christmas traditions. Or perhaps Wales was simply waiting for our fourth season, secure in the fact that the Festive Fans would sooner or later have to pass through its green valleys (plus, its snow-dusted mountains, medieval castles, quaint villages, and sheep, lots of sheep).

Whatever the excuse, four years is too long. Wales seems made for a foreign Christmas podcast. There is a sense of enchantment woven into this country. No one captured that feeling better than Dylan Thomas. His famous work is called a poem, but it reads like an adventure story. It doesn’t have legends, battles, and conquering heroes; instead, it is a tale filled with snowball fights, eccentric relatives, and young boys roaming through a happily remembered Welsh town.  Dylan Thomas has that unmistakable Welsh gift for finding poetry in everyday life. The Christmastime he shows us is full of ordinary memories that become more cherished with every retelling. His childhood Wales is wonderfully honest and real and that is what makes the work so enduring.

And so, we not only visit A Child’s Christmas in Wales, but also the more modern version A Child’s Christmases in Wales, to fully appreciate the holiday chaos, the community, and the joy of looking backward. However, underneath the obvious youthful sentiment, there is an adult’s realization that the people and Christmases he remembers are gone. These films are not only a celebration of childhood, but a eulogy for it.

Our favorite Christmas memories are a shared emotional landscape, and Dylan Thomas turns that landscape into something universal. You do not have to be Welsh to envision the world he describes in the poem. We all have childhood Christmases that become brighter in our minds as the years get more distant. Dylan Thomas just recognizes that memory does not only preserve a moment in time, it decorates it with magic.
