A Springtime Special: Cousin Seth vs Cadbury Eggs-the Rematch!

Welcome back, Christmas Cousins!

Spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming, and the Easter Bunny is back—but so is Cousin Seth’s old nemesis… the infamous Cadbury Egg! That’s right, Christmas Cousins, we’re revisiting one of the greatest taste test battles of all time: Seth vs. the Cadbury Egg, Round Two!

After his less-than-enthusiastic reaction last time (read: mild horror and existential dread), Seth is giving this Easter staple another shot. Will he finally embrace the gooey goodness, or will it once again send him into a spiral of regret? And just to make things even sweeter, we’re bringing in some festive springtime fun, surprises, and maybe even a few other Easter treats to taste-test along the way.

Gremlins, the Score and Soundtrack (w/ Kevin Williams)

What’s up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, made better by Jerry Goldsmith’s score and the killer hits of Michael Sembello and Peter Gabriel. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to really dig into a couple of cues from the “Gremlins” score and dish about music theory of it all as well.

We first get into the mega madness with the Sembello track. Played during the bar scene, the uptempo dance song set the stage for the “Maniac”-like antics of the dancing green creature. The film also features a track by Quarterflash and Darlene Love’s epically classic “Christmas.”

Goldsmith’s penchant for atonality shines forth in the frantic cue ‘No Santa Claus.’ The Stravinsky-esque eighths are composed of dueling tritones E-Bb and D-Ab and immediately transition to alternating bars of 5/8 and 7/8. Subsequently, all this segues quite nicely into held sonorities overlaid with “Silent Night” as Kate begins her tale of holiday woe. Talk about harmonization!

Altered mystic chord? Check. Catchy mogwai theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if there’s 7 different types! So grab your Roland Jupiter-6, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Gremlins” score and soundtrack!

A talking dog?  A racing turtle?  Pizza with ashes?  A one-eyed bald man? What does this all have to do with Christmas?

Find out this episode as we head out to one of the most biodiverse countries in the world to take on the Solar System or the Del Solar System.  From the Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest, it is Christmas Eve in Peru — a place with a colorful history and a fascinating civilization — and the Festive Fans want to know how they celebrate.  Grab a hot chocolate and a piece of Paneton, slather it with butter, and settle down for a spirited evening at a home in Lima where an extended family is gathering for the holiday.  There will be fireworks, and not just at midnight.

Based on a popular play, El sistema solar is a Santa sack filled with outrageous lies, an intra-family love triangle, and shocking revelations, and that’s all before dinner is served. Come join us on an intriguing multicultural trip to one of the most culturally complex countries in the world, plus you get to learn how to say Merry Christmas in Quechuan!
