It’s A Wonderful Life 80th

Sounds of Christmas

IT’S CHRISTMAS PODCAST DAY!! It’s also the 80th anniversary of “It’s a Wonderful Life!”

What’s up, dudes? Every time a bell rings, an ’80s sitcom hires a worse angel. We’re talking “’80s Versions of It’s a Wonderful Life”! I’ve got Ed Daly, author of The Christmas Book: The Ultimate Guide to Your Favorite Holiday, with me!

Capra’s 1946 movie was a December TV habit by the time Moonlighting, The Facts of Life, and Married… with Children all took a turn in the machine. This isn’t one remake. It’s the tour. On December 16, 1986, ABC’s Moonlighting let Maddie Hayes wish she’d never kept Blue Moon open, then showed her a world where everybody else thrived and she didn’t (“It’s a Wonderful Job”). On December 12, 1987, The Facts of Life sent Beverly Ann to a Santa who could delete her from Peekskill (“It’s a Wonderful Christmas”). And on December 17, 1989 — right after The Simpsons premiered — Fox gave Al Bundy a Christmas-club disaster, a light-string electrocution, and Sam Kinison as the opposite of Clarence (“It’s a Bundyful Life,” a two-parter). Al’s famous button, the one where he wants his life back because his family looked too happy without him, is the anti-Capra and is reported in later write-ups rather than recited here as a verbatim line. Marlo Thomas’s It Happened One Christmas is 1977, so it only gets a wave from the doorway. A Charles in Charge episode called “It’s a Blunderful Life” shows up on guides dated November 4, 1989; that date and plot were not re-verified for this draft.

Bell? Check. Angel with a worse attitude than Clarence? Yep. A shoe salesman who learns the wrong lesson on purpose? That’s Bundyful! So put on the nightshirt, don’t grab the Christmas lights with wet hands, and walk into this episode on “’80s Versions of It’s a Wonderful Life”!

Sounds of Christmas

It’s Christmas Podcast Day and we are talking about lost time! Since we just turned back the clocks, it’s a perfect time to talk about the time we have lost.

So pull up a chair, because I have to tell you about the time eleven days just… vanished.

In September 1752, people in Britain and the American colonies went to bed on Wednesday the 2nd and woke up on Thursday the 14th. Not because of a wild night out, but by Act of Parliament. And when Christmas rolled around that winter, a whole lot of people looked at the new calendar and said, “Absolutely not.”

In this episode, I dig into how Julius Caesar’s calendar slowly broke, and how Sweden ended up with the one and only February 30th in history (and yes, someone got married on it). I’ll also bust the famous “Give us our eleven days!” riots, which, spoiler, probably never happened. Then we head out into the cold with crowds carrying lanterns to a thorn tree, waiting to see which Christmas it would bloom on. Along the way you’ll meet cows that supposedly kneel at midnight on Old Christmas Eve, and a bull named Old Buck who still crashes a party on the Outer Banks every January.

So is Christmas on the right day? Grab some cocoa and let’s find out.

Title: CWFC 169 – Next Stop, Christmas [Christmas Podcast Day Bonus Episode]

Happy Christmas Podcast Day!

We’re celebrating Christmas Podcast Day and the end of Daylight Saving Time by turning back the clocks and revisiting a past episode.

We’re taking another look at The Christmas Gig: Two Thousand Ten, the album of original Christmas music that accompanied Target’s 2010 holiday advertising campaign.

In this episode, I talk about a couple of holiday songs that *might* have started as unused tracks from The Christmas Gig. Jim at Christmas Underground shares his continued hunt for a copy of the physical promo album. And Alex, who worked at Target around the time of The Christmas Gig, gives us all an early Christmas present: one of the Christmas commercials from the campaign that we thought was lost forever!

Thank you Jim and Alex for both sharing your stories!

Check out Christmas Underground and check out https://christmaspodcasts.com/ for all of the other Christmas Podcast Day episodes!

Happy Halloween! 👻 And welcome to another season of Christmas Past.

We’re continuing our tradition of kicking things off with a ghost story from my friends at Biblioasis Books. Every season, they issue a set of three classic ghost stories for Christmas, designed and decorated by the acclaimed artists known only as Seth.

Today’s story is Edith Wharton’s “The Duchess at Prayer,” first published in Scribner’s Magazine in 1900. Neglected by her absent husband, the beautiful Duchess Violante turns to prayer and, seemingly, the company of the Duke’s cousin. Suspicious of his wife, the Duke returns unexpectedly one day and an argument breaks out which takes a dark turn—and leaves the memory of that day immportalized in the haunting face of a stone statue.

I’m so excited to kick off another season with you and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Christmas Past! 😮

May your days be merry and bright!

Title: Welcome to Pine Tree Valley – the Halloween Episode 🎃🎃
Christmas Everyday

What’s up, dudes? One more for the road… and one more for the gorilla in the courtyard. We’re talking Knight Rider “Halloween Knight”! Joe Martinez from Now Watch This is here with me to save into the Hitchcock and the Hoff!

It’s October 28, 1984, on NBC. Season 3, and the guides argue about whether it’s episode 4 or 5, so don’t die on that hill. Bonnie Barstow is sick, the neighbors are loud, and through the courtyard window she watches a gorilla costume strangle somebody. Michael and Devon hear “fever” and reach for the hallucination explanation. Then the woman and the furniture are gone. The janitor’s name is Norman Baines, he keeps taxidermy, and Kurt Paul — Anthony Perkins’s “Psycho” stunt double — is playing him, which is the reddest herring in a building that also borrows the Bates house, a backwards-talking hologram, and a drive-in screening of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Bill Nuss wrote it, Winrich Kolbe directed it, David Hasselhoff is Michael, Patricia McPherson is Bonnie, Edward Mulhare is Devon, and William Daniels is still the only car you’d trust with a turbo boost through a movie screen. The gorilla is not the guy named Norman. Halloween, Foundation-approved.

Courtyard gorilla? Check. Psycho-house scavenger hunt? Yep. Turbo boost through a Black Lagoon screen? That’s the money shot! So grab a costume, believe Bonnie, and ride into this episode on Knight Rider “Halloween Knight”!
