Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

For this episode, we travel to the Middle East and the region which today is known as the Palestinian Territory. In the same way that Festive Fans covered Russia and Ukraine last December, we wanted to visit another area in need of hope during this holiday season.  Finding joy during times of war can be deeply challenging.  What is ironic is how the birthplace of the Prince of Peace has seen such ongoing human suffering, political tension, and regional instability.  We view the State of Palestine through the eyes of a father and son, Abu and Shadi, featured in the 2017 film Wajib.  Not only is there the existing tension between the Palestinians and the Israelis, but also the strained relationship between the father and son.

Abu lives in the daily shadow of oppression, trying his best to continue a normal life.  Shadi lives in Italy, after having been forced to leave because of his political activity.  Their internal struggle is brought to the surface when Shadi returns to Nazareth for his sister’s wedding.  Shadi is angry by what he sees as the humiliation of the Palestinian people, but Abu is loyal and devoted to his homeland.  The two spend the day together hand-delivering wedding invitations.  The constant bickering can be exhausting, but their quiet resolution is touching and reminds us how hope can flourish even in the midst of strife.  If there is a Christmas message here, it is the importance of human connection among all people. This offers the only possibility for peace and the promise of a better tomorrow.

The three kings. The wise men. The magi. They’re the supporting cast in many a Nativity scene…the subject of several postage stamps and greeting cards…the subject of that classic Christmas song. Who were they? Where were they from? Why did they traverse afar following yonder star? What was with the gold, frankincense, and myrrh? Were they even real? And does it matter? Today, professor and author Eric Vanden Eykel joins Brian to tell the story of these mysterious figures.

The question on everyone’s minds this holiday season-will he or won’t he?

Last year, our Festive Freshman, Cousin Seth, got his first ever Christmas Tree…but this year, as our Seasonal Sophomore, well, with Cousin Seth you just never know…

Will he get a tree? If so, live or fake? Will he propose to Mrs. X at a Christmas Tree Farm?!?

So many questions and just not enough time before Christmas.!!!

What’s up, dudes? It’s December 6th, the Feast of St. Nicholas, so I’ve got Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast and Art Kilmer from A Cozy Christmas with me to talk about the straight-to-video special “Nicholas: The Boy Who Became Santa!”

Released in 1989, the special focuses on the charity and faith of a young Nicholas of Myra. Several vignettes and time jumps form the basis of the show, from fishing with the local Bishop to giving away his family’s wealth. Nicholas saves and befriends a boy named Adrian. Spoiler alert: Adrian eventually follows him.

Subsequently, a grown Nicholas saves a woodcutter’s daughters from slavery by throwing bags of gold into their house. Unfortunately, though, most of St. Nicholas’s famous miracles are not used in special. Rather, the thrust of it is his kindness and willingness to give. Of course, he is eventually imprisoned for being Christian, but is released after some time. In fact, he returns to his See to find it thriving because of his example.

The miracle of bringing children back to life? Nope. The miracle of his bilocation and calming a sea storm? Not that one either. The miracle of not mentioning any of his most popular miracles? Definitely! So give away your inheritance to the poor, forget most of what you know about the good Saint, and take a listen to this episode all about “Nicholas: The Boy Who Became Santa!”

We’re officially in December, the Christmas season, and I have more interviews than I can get through in the weeks leading up to Christmas. From here on in, I’ll run excerpts from the interviews I’ve done, and I’ll run them in their entirety next season.

This episode starts with some clean-up business after last week’s conversation with Midge Ure on “Do They Know it’s Christmas.” I referenced Ed Sheeran’s complaint that he would have preferred to be left off the 40th anniversary mega-mix, and the charges against the song by Fuse ODG. In the episode, I reference Bob Geldof responding to criticisms of the song.

I also mentioned one of my favorite new releases of the season, Dadi Freyr’s How Dadi Stole Christmas.

This episode, I talk to Joey Williams, musical director for The Blind Boys of Alabama. In the episode, I mention that they surprised me with a new release, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” with Jay Buchanan. We talk about their album, Go Tell it on the Mountain, and when we revisit this conversation next season, we’ll also talk about their collaboration with Taj Mahal, Talkin’ Christmas.

Another new track comes from Nick Bhalla, who recorded the album Saint Nick with his jazz piano trio. As this version of “Christmas Time is Here” shows, it borders on lo-fi in its emphasis on mood and melody. Hopefully I’ll be able to get him for the show next season.

I also interview Bruce Sudano, who has a new album, Talkin’ Ugly Truth, Tellin’ Pretty Lies. When I revisit this interview in its entirety next season, we’ll get into that and his start with Alive and Kicking, the band that recorded the one-hit wonder “Tighter, Tighter” in 1970.

We talk about his relationship with Donna Summer, who he wrote songs for, married, and managed. We start talking about Bad Girls, the first album he worked on, then move to Summer’s 1994 Christmas album, The Christmas Spirit, which was reissued on vinyl this holiday season.

After that, I talk to singer, songwriter, and friend of 12 Songs Alexandra Scott about Sia’s Everyday is Christmas. It’s a loose conversation as we work through some thoughts about a Christmas album we both really like, but with a few reservations.

Finally, on Black Friday I appeared on WBUR’s “Here and Now” to talk about songs you might want to add to your holiday playlists. The segment is online now, and even if you’ve already heard it, you might want to visit the page since it has a playlist with some additional songs that I would have featured if we had another hour.

Finally, DJ David Kunian invited me to join him on his radio show to spin and talk about Christmas music on WWOZ in New Orleans on Tuesday night. The show is online for the next two weeks if you’d like to check it out.

Merry Christmas!
It’s a packed show, and we start off with a not particularly good version of A Christmas Carol from 2001. It’s animated and has the voices of Kate Winslet, Simon Callow and Nic Cage as Jacon Marley.

Next up is A Story of Shame from our listener Nettie Tebeau.

Then it’s our yearly chat with Scott Newman of Tinsel Tunes.  This time we look at the King of Christmas (at least in the UK), Cliff Richard.  He’s been part of the Christmas number 1 four times and he’s also released a whole bunch of other Christmas songs (and 2 albums).  We talk about 4 of his songs and you can check them out here:
