🎄 It is once again Scrooge Sunday, and the time has come to awkwardly smoosh our spirits through the walls of our bedchamber and float back to 2004 for a special TV movie based on Alan Menken’s musical adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” starring Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge, Jason Alexander as Marley’s Ghost, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Belle, and Jane Krakowski as the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Michael May and Rob Graham from After Lunch join the celebration of abundance, charity, and good will toward men as we forge this podcast link by link and dumb joke by dumb joke.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the lights! My guest today is new author Makennah Johnston, who has just published a wonderful children’s story called “The McBrights”:

“Every Christmas Eve, the McBrights dazzle from the branches of the Evergreen Tree in Henbrook’s town square, warming hearts with their old-fashioned glow. This year, however, something isn’t quite right. The McBrights are left in their storage box for longer than usual, and when they are finally unpacked, they find themselves for sale at an antique store!

They may be vintage, but their bulbs aren’t burnt out yet. Bernie McBright is determined to get his family shining where they belong. Could the store’s newest visitor be the spark the McBrights need to light up Christmas once more?”

I also recommend another children’s Christmas book called The Candy Cane Forest by Lindsay Ann Fink. It’s a charming and colorful story of how Santa’s elves plant and grow one of my favorite Christmas treats – Candy canes! After that I wrap up with a few thoughts on the lights of Christmas, and what they mean to me.

Discover the surprising, two-thousand-year journey of the lutin, France’s iconic mischievous spirit. Once born from the Roman sea god Neptune, lutins evolved into medieval house goblins, regional tricksters, and—much later—the playful Christmas helpers of Père Noël. This episode uncovers their ancient origins, regional variations, magical abilities, and the rise of the modern lutin farceur tradition sweeping France today.

Perfect for fans of Christmas folklore, mythology, European history, and modern holiday traditions, this deep dive reveals how a once-feared night sprite became one of France’s most beloved symbols of holiday magic.

Hello and Merry Christmas! My guest today is podcast host and the only man who dares enter the Grinch’s lair, Tim Babb from the “Can’t Wait for Christmas” podcast! Tim and I get together to talk about one of our favorite Christmas movies, 2000’s “Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring the brilliantly funny Jim Carrey. We talk about our favorite parts, favorite quotes, memories around the film, and more. We also talk about Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who!), her career post-Grinch, and her delightful new Christmas album, “A Pretty Reckless Christmas.” After my chat with Tim, I talk a little bit about how to get through the holidays with your mental health intact, and share a few Christmasy things that have brought me laughter.

What’s up, dudes? Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps joins me to dive into the 1986 made-for-tv movie “Christmas Eve!” Starring Loretta Young and Rachel’s dad from “Friends,” this melodrama has charm!

Although Amanda Kingsley is now extremely wealthy, she remembers her hardscrabble upbringing. She now spends her time trying to help the less fortunate around her. Conversely, her business-minded son, Andrew, has never wanted for anything, and has become hardhearted. Upon receiving bad medical news, Amanda engages down-at-heel private investigator Morris Huffner to track down Andrew’s three estranged children. She desperately longs for one final family Christmas.

Huffner tracks down the youngest first. He is now a country singer, and vaguely knows the whereabouts of his sister. Of course, Huffner uses the lead to track down the young lady, and seemingly falls for her. Finally, Huffner finds the oldest son, who had dodged the draft by fleeing to Canada. They all come together and force a change of heart on Andrew.

A philanthropic protagonist? Check. A miserly antagonist? Got it. An Alfred Pennyworth-like butler? Definitely! So grab your notebook and track down this episode on “Christmas Eve!”

We’re in the last weeks before Christmas and I have more interviews than I can handle.

This week starts with a version of “Wonderful Christmas Time” by Twanguero before we get to my interview with Roland Gift, ex of Fine Young Cannibals. He talks about the way a new Chanel ad campaign with Dua Lipa and Blackpink’s Jennie has introduced a new generation to the Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy,” and about FYC40, an compilation of the band’s hits with a second disc of dance remixes.

Gift also mentions the video for “Everybody Knows it’s Christmas.”

I follow that with Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig from Old Crow Medicine Show, who this year released OCMS Xmas, their first Christmas album. There’s a lot of good stuff in that conversation, more than we have time for in this episode, so I’ll revisit it in its entirety next season.

Finally, I talk to Lorin Sklamberg of The Klezmatics about the reissue of their album, Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah, where they added music to lyrics written by Guthrie. Here too, there’s more good stuff than we had time for, so I’ll return to this next conversation next season as well.

One mea culpa: The most embarrassing moment of the season comes in conjunction with this interview because on Apple Music, the song I lead into the conversation with appears as “Ny Psycho Freylekhs.” I pronounced it that way, then realized when I downloaded the song after the introduction had been recorded that it was “NY” as in “New York,” not “Ny” as in the end is nigh. I never feel smart staggering through other languages, but I haven’t felt as dumb as I did when I saw the proper spelling.

The episode ends with music by Haunted House Party from A Strange Daisy Christmas.
