This season has featured surf Christmas music, calypso Christmas music, Sicilian Christmas music and smooth jazz Christmas music, so it can’t be too much of a surprise that we finally get to Cajun Christmas music. I think Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys are an important band as they picked up the work of maintaining endangered musical traditions that was started by a generation before him, and he influenced the generation that followed by finding contemporary ways to express those traditions.

In today’s interview, we talk about Feufollet’s Chris Stafford, who I wrote about shortly after he died at My Spilt Milk.

When I played “Silent Night” by Harry Fontenot, I didn’t identify it. It’s from the album Merry Cajun Christmas.

I also mentioned that you can find Riley’s Party at the Holiday, All Night Long and other contemporary Cajun music at ValcourRecords.com.

If you’re interested in taking Cajun accordion lessons from Steve, you can reach him through his Facebook page or the Contact info at MamouPlayboys.com.

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House, Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ, and Tommy Coombs the Pop Daddy here to talk about the Halloween episode of the 1990 syndicated show/game show “Video Power!” Hosted by Johnny Arcade, what began as a show of video game tips and cartoon intermissions morphed into players competing at video games for the opportunity to run through the maze to win ultimate prizes!

In this season 1 Halloween episode, Johnny opens the show dressed as the vampire Count Arcadula. He interviews some kids in the crowd to see what Halloween costume they’re wearing. Following this, he  gives tips on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Frankenstein for the NES.

During the animated Power Team segment, Mr. Big uses a train full of kids as bait to trap the heroes. When the Power Team arrives, Max Force, Kuros, Tyrone, and Kwirk vie against the traps and devices set to ensnare and destroy them. Luckily, with help from animated Johnny and Bigfoot, they scape and foil Mr. Big’s plans.

Costumes? Check. Eerie music? Uh huh. Vampire teeth that fall out? Looking at you, Johnny! So grab your controller, hope in Bigfoot, and try to win with this episode on “Video Power!”

Seasons Eatings

This dessert has its origins in pre-Christian traditions, but the modern version has only been around for a few hundred years.  While it’s usually done as a log shape, newer creations have a more avant garde approach to the dessert.  We’re going back to the sweets table and getting a second helping of the Yule log.

We’re celebrating ’70s horror with one of the best, Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). We also discuss what we’ve been watching as Halloween approaches, and we read some of the reviews for Hooper’s, a restaurant that occupies the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre house.

Note: We apologize for the occasional audio issues, a result of a recent internet fiber “upgrade.” We’ll do our best to improve this situation before Christmas episodes begin.
