Total Christmas

Merry Christmas you beautiful people!

It’s a packed episode filled to the brim with Christmas joy.

We start the show with a version of A Christmas Carol from 1913 starring Seymour Hicks.  They’ve made some interesting choices.
You can watch it here:

The Bob Baker explains the difference between a yard and a garden in Do You Hear What I Hear.

This episodes joke comes from the lovely Pamel Wooten. We may have had it before but who cares?

Last week we looked at the Yorkshire Christmas Pie, and this week we look at another Yorkshire tradition.  Christmas cake with cheese.

It’s been two years since we’ve had The Worst Christmas Present Ever segment, so I’ve scoured the internet and found some for you.

Then Bob is back with Spread A Smile of Joy and there are many people who don’t celebrate Christmas, so why not share their holidays.
Check out Bob’s podcast, Festive Foreigh Film Fans, here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then we have The Christmas Quiz.  I scored a respectable 7, see how you get on.

If you want to get in touch I’d love to hear from you.

Total Christmas

I don’t usually get to end a conversation on Christmas music with memories of radio legend Art Bell and his late night deep dive into the paranormal, After Dark with Art Bell. But that’s what happened when I talked to Mark Christopher Lee of the British lo-fi indie rock band The Pocket Gods. It took a lot of discipline not to end the show with After Dark’s theme, “Chase” by Giorgio Moroder. Instead, the episode ends with “Merry Christmas to the Drunks, Merry Christmas to the Lovers,” a new-to-me track by the Edinburgh indie band ballboy.

My conversation with Lee on The Pocket Gods covers a lot of ground as we talk about influential British DJ John Peel, Phil Spector, John Cage, and the way Lee morphed the band into a conceptual art project that explored how musicians do and don’t get paid in a streaming ecosystem dominated by Spotify.

Late in the conversation, we talk about Lee’s forays into documentary films. You can find Weird: The Life and Times of a Pocket God, Inspired: The 30-Second Song Movie, God Versus Aliens, and The King of UFOs: Royal UFO Secrets Revealed at Tubitv.com or the Tubi Roku app.

All of the music on today’s show is available at the iTunes Store, but 2021’s A Quantum Christmas Song, which is more than 115 hours long, can only be purchased as a full album and requires more than 8 GB of disc space to download. I think Mark will understand if you choose to stream rather than buy that one.

What’s up, dudes? Merry Dinosaur Day! Shawn Robare from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and Plastic Rocket Pop and I talk the 1987 cartoon “Dinosaucers!” It’s good dinos versus evil tyrannos as two dinosaur alien factions fight for freedom!

It’s Dinosaur Day on Reptilon, and the Dinosaucers are set to return to their home planet for the celebration. The Tyrannos decide to spoil it for Bonehead by telling him Stego-Claws isn’t real. Consequently, the dejected dino refuses to go back home for the holiday. Luckily. He’s visited by the actual Stego-Claws who takes him and David on a trip to deliver presents on Reptilon in his sledosaucer pulled by Rude Ralph the red-nosed rhamphorhynchus.

The Tyrannos ambush the trio at Stego-Claws’s workshop. Using furball elves and Bonehead’s devolved pachycephalosaur self, the trio escapes and delivers presents to good dinosaucers. At another house, they again encounter the Tyrannos, and again, with Stego-Claws’s magic, they defeat them. Bonehead and David return to Earth, and, with renewed belief, Bonehead joins his friends for Dinosaur Day.

Stego-Claws? Check. Rude Ralph? Yep. Saucertoe? Well, they don’t have missiles on Reptilon! So put your finger aside your snout, hop in your sledosaucer, and fly to this Dinosaucers Christmas episode!

What’s up, dudes? There’s more than meets the eye here with illustrator and podcaster Jerzy Drozd as we talk all about Transformers UK comics Christmas issues! From Starscream to Optimus Prime, we get into all of it, and deck the halls with boughs of Hot Rod…waitasec…. Yes, it’s Transformers Christmas miracle edition!

In Transformers #145 from 1987, Starscream feels homesick, which shows that even evil robots can get the Christmas blues. As he ponders his plight, a young boy tries to teach him the meaning of Christmas. He encourages the Decepticon to explore emotions and actions of goodwill, even convincing him to help a bus full of elderly folks. Unfortunately, Streetwise the Autobot attacks him, thinking his intent is for ill. The boy admonishes Streetwise for his unprompted cavalier assault, and the Autobot watches helplessly as the Decepticon rescues the stuck bus. Streetwise apologizes and escorts the bus to safety, leaving Starscream ultimately to reflect on the experience. Turns out, he didn’t like helping, but he thoroughly enjoyed humiliating his enemy.

In Transformers #198 from 1988, a newly resurrected Optimus Prime, now a Power Master, mulls over his attachment to Earth with indifference. As he isolates himself to think, the other Power Masters see on the news a town destroyed by giant robots. Inevitably suspecting Decepticon involvement, thee heroes investigate, only to find the culprits were Autobots overindulged in Christmas shenanigans. Of course Optimus Prime finds them all, and renews there commitment to protect the citizens of Earth. Indubitably, it’s a glorious day!

Giant robot fights? Yep. Good versus evil? Got it. A story about nothing? Only a very Seinfeldian one! So hop in your robot buddy and roll out to this episode on Transformers Christmas comics!

Michela Mussolino introduced me to a new body of Christmas music this week. The New Jersey-born Memphis resident specializes in Sicilian folk music, and she recorded an album of predominantly Sicilian Christmas songs in 2022 on La Notti Triunfanti.

We talk about how someone arrives at that specialty, the deep history behind some of these songs, and how moving to Memphis affected some of the songs on the album.

In the episode, Michela talks about “Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle” being one of the best loved Italian Christmas songs, so I chose Andrea Bocelli’s version to give you a taste of it.

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

Put on your Gjermundbu helmet, grab your tunic and don’t forget the woolen underwear. We are off the coolest country in Europe to explore their Christmas traditions during our dog days of summer. We are talking Norway, on the outskirts of Europe – the land of Vikings, reindeer, mountains, glaciers, and fjords. Is there anything better? Yes, Norway has the northern lights!

Plus our visit to Scandinavia provides us an opportunity to review the Yuletime dramedy Himmelfall about mentally ill patients at the holidays.  Mark and Bob also weigh in on a raging controversy about what is the best regional meal to serve for Christmas dinner (we have our thoughts).  Next, we take on a festive song called “Nå er det jul”, which mentions several of the Norwegian traditions, and ole’ Julenisse brings the Splayers what is our number one gift – Crocs for Christmas!

Bob and Mark are currently gathering a petition to allow two lowly but impartial American podcasters to resolve the national debate that we understand has riled the country and turned neighbor against neighbor.  We believe that only hungry  outsiders who vote with their stomachs can set it right and determine once and for all which is the better choice:  ribbe or pinnekjøtt?  Our only requirment is that we be served these celebrated meals many times over a several week period to ensure that we can make a smart, honest and thorough assessment.  Oh, yes, we will also need many bottles of the best Norwegian beer.  This is necessary to clense our distinguished palates with some homegrown brew before we attack the next meal.

Don’t forget the Festive Foreign Fun Fact.  You may need one this winter!  We also are looking for a local touring guide sporting a Santa hat to escort the Festive Fans on a fishing, hiking and skiing expedition, preferably to Lillehammer’s Olympic resort.  We want the full Norwegian experience (especially if everything is on the house, because, you know, we are Festive Foreign influencers and worth every free penny)!  One last request, let us know which of our new theme songs you like – “Another Festive Foreign Film Fan” (apologies to Pink Floyd), “Festive Foreign Film Fans” (apologies to Cyndi Lauper”), or “Festive Foreign Film Fans” (apologies to Michael Jackson”).  Send your choice to festivefans@gmail.com.

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! And Happy August! We’re in the final four weeks of the year before we hit the ‘Ber Months! How exciting is that?!

Due to vacation and work schedules, the elves are taking a much needed week off. Never fear though! Anthony is back once more with a special “Summerween” treat that he recorded a few weeks back in anticipation for this moment! Yet again, he is joined by his good friend, Cookie, to finish off their mini arc of episodes covering Ti West’s and Mia Goth’s “X” trilogy!

Previously, they revisited “X”, they re-watched “Pearl“, and now they’ve finally seen “MaXXXine” and are ready to talk about it! This time, however, the two are not fully in sync. when it comes to their feelings, so expect some friendly fireworks to fly as they dive deep into and discuss the final chapter of Maxine Minx’s story! Is it a fitting ending for “the star” who has always refused to “accept a life she does not deserve”? Well, you’ll just have to tune in to find out!

This is a really fun one – despite some audio issues on the part of Anthony (sorry!) – and is sure to tide you over and keep you entertained until all three elves return next week with your regularly scheduled Christmas programming! So, settle back and enjoy!

As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! ❤️🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🔔🚂 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

What’s up, dudes? We interrupt your regularly scheduled summer day to bring you this special news bulletin! Yes, Mike Westfal of  Advent Calendar House and Tim Babb from Can’t Wait for Christmas are one the scene with me to talk all about the 1989 “Sesame Street News Flash: Santa Claus” sketch!

From episode 2592 of season 20, this three minute news flash sees ace reporter Kermit the Frog attempt to catch Santa in the act of delivering presents on Christmas Eve. The sketch was directed by Jon Stone, and was originally titled ‘A Clean Sweep.’ Our green correspondent hides behind a family’s Christmas tree, and springs into action upon hearing a noise from the chimney. To his great surprise, a “Bert from Mary Poppins”-esque chimney cleaner, C. Sweep, tumbles out of the fireplace. Apparently he was hired to unclog the chimney! And on Christmas Eve of all times!

Kermit admonishes the Victorian London sweep and encourages him to clean the chimney post haste! Unwittingly, C. Sweep clears the obstruction, and out pops Santa Claus himself! This is why Gary Shandling greases his chimney. Santa immediately sits to rest, and Sweep jumps on his lap and starts reciting his Christmas list. Kermit gets dragged into the whole charade. It’s almost as wacky as the time Kermit saw the holiday mascots get mixed up.

Mandatory Jerry Nelson voice? Yep. Anything muppets? Sweep and Santa, of course. Flustered flippers? Only Kermit’s! So grab your microphone, hide behind a Christmas tree, and help a chimney sweep unclog this episode about “Sesame Street News Flash: Santa Claus!”
