What’s up, dudes? Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio and Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax join me to talk all about the game show “Hollywood Squares!” It’s a full size tic tac toe with celebrities giving zingers and singing songs!

In a 1987 episode, it’s Scott versus Becky with guest panelists Joan Rivers, Jim J. Bullock, Tracey Gold, Alyssa Milano, and Gary Coleman. The secret square contained a trip to Disney World! Talk about a prize! As it turns out, Scott came out with $150 and a bike, and Becky really made out like a bandit with $300, bikes, and that dope trip to Disney! Get it, girl!

The following year in 1988, Tommy and Suzy are contestants. The grid was filled Joan Rivers, Debbie Reynolds, Jim J. Bullock, Tina Yothers, Jason Hervey, and Janice from “The Price is Right!” Debbie Reynolds serenaded us with Rudolph while Tommy raked up the dollars. No one won the secret square, so there was no trip to Hawaii, unfortunately. Tommy wins, but also doesn’t get the car. Talk about super random final challenges!

Celebrities singing? Yep. Matching red “Hollywood Squares” jackets. For sure! Alyssa Milano looking disinterested and bored? Oh yeah! So choose Xs or Os, call on your favorite TV star, and listen to this episode!

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

OK, Festive Fans, pour yourselves a Mai Thai and get ready for the last episode of our first season!  We are heading east – Far East – to Thailand, a captivating land of beaches, palaces, ruins, and temples.  It’s the perfect ending for a final holiday outing to shake our Christmas booties with the Buddhists and elephants.

First, we review the film Rak haeng Siam or The Love of Siam.   The portrayal of life in the film is very realistic:  family dynamics, confusing emotions, and the painful truth that you don’t always get what you want.  It is a multi-layered drama that deals with loneliness, longing, pain, tragedy, alcoholism, peer pressure, success, sexual awakenings, and family responsibilities, all in one film.  Merry Christmas!  No wonder the film is so long.

And yet, there is nothing more poignant than when Mew finally receives the last piece of Tong’s gift, completing the wooden Santa.  It accurately captures all of their pent-up emotions without dialogue — the memories they made together, the love they share, and the reality that they can’t be together.  If there is a lesson here, it is about societal separation, and coping with being apart from ones you truly love.  Not cheerful or merry, but honest and emotional, which is what the holidays are all about.

We also discuss the open way that Buddhists accept the Christmas celebration and the teachings of Jesus.  It is uplifting and spiritual how Thai culture shines through in their local approach to the holiday.  Many Thai will celebrate Christmas, but will also incorporate Buddhist traditions as well.  We all share the core beliefs of togetherness, love, generosity, and care for others that are on display at Christmas.  We can’t  think of a better common message of brotherhood and community on which to end our first season.   Optimum est alius nondum venit (the best is yet to come)!

Festive

Welcome to episode 112 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about the Tokyo Cuban Boys’ 1966 album, “Christmas Dance Party.”

This is a wonderful album. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do. For a popular, prolific band with a career spanning nine decades, you’d think I’d have been able to find a little more biographical information about them. Their Wikipedia entry is short and repetitive, while their profile on their official website is mostly just a list of dates. I will talk about them a bit more when I cover Chiemi Eri, but most of that will be about her relationship with one of the band members and it’s not entirely relevant to the rest of the band.

Join me back here next week for a mini-episode about singer, actor and activist, Akihiro Miwa. Then join me later in the month for Teruaki Kawamura’s “Merry Christmas Everyone – Folk Dance Party.” It’s a fun album that doesn’t show up very often. And listen in again on the 25th when I cover the 1962 compilation, “Young Christmas.” It’s one of the more sought-after records and one that, at one point, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to afford. They’re loaded with some great music you’re sure to enjoy.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Seasons Eatings

Legend has it that the name for this dessert came from a cry of amazement from a boy at the sight of this gold-coloured cake! It stems from a tradition of women meeting on Christmas eve to bake together. This sweet cake resembles a Christmas star guiding the magi to the birth of Jesus.  Even the box in comes in can be used as a toy. We’re exploring the history and origin of pandoro.

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics!

This week, Kendall Farrae of “Two Girls, One Crypt” joins us for our latest installment of “Christmas Horror Month”! Discussed this week? The 2023 slasher-comedy, “It’s a Wonderful Knife”! While the elves loved “There’s Something in the Barn” and found “The Mean One” so bad it’s good, is there anything redeemable about this week’s film or is it a giant dud? Well…you’ll just have to listen to find out! But one thing’s for sure: bad or not, it’s a really fun discussion, especially with one of our favorite recurring guest hosts!

So settle in, relax, and enjoy this festive, laugh-a-minute episode, which we promise is the perfect way to kick off your week! Enjoy and, as always, thanks for your love and support, y’all!

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Jeff C. Smith with me to talk about the dynamic stroke of comedy genius that is 1985’s “Clue!” Jeff is the writer/director/producer of “Who Done It: The Clue Documentary,” and he shared some cool stuff! But waitasec, Gerry! I love the film, but it isn’t a Christmas movie! Well, it was a Christmas season release, premiering in December of ’85!

When six strangers are invited to a mysterious mansion for dinner, murder is on the menu. Mr. Boddy, the host, is blackmailing all of them, from the jealous wife to the adulterous doctor to the maid’s employer. One by one others arrive at the house only to be picked off as they’re implicated as blackmail accomplices. With three different endings, the movie answers the questions of who killed Mr. Boddy, and where, and with what.

“Who Done It: The Clue Documentary” is all about the making of the cult classic. Jeff interviews cast and crew from Leslie Ann Warren and Michael McKean to director Jonathan Lynn. What was the enigmatic fourth ending? How did Jonathan Lynn end up writing the script? Why weren’t the characters wearing the colors of their game counterparts?

Blackmail? Yep. Murder? Of course. Flames on the side of my face? Only if Madeline Kahn is saying it. So grab your revolver, shoot the singing telegram, and run from room to room listening to this episode!
