Episode 23 - George C Scott's Christmas Carol
/

It’s Episode 23 and it’s great to be alive.

We start with a Story of Shame form one of the co-hosts of Jingle Jank, Jay Lachapelle, will the young ever learn that no good will come from peeking at your Christmas presents?

Hard to believe, but this is the first time we look at one of the major versions of A Christmas Carol.  This is the 1984 one starring George C Scott as Scrooge and a host of British actors in the supporting roles.  It’s a fantastic version and if you’ve never seen it, it’s on YouTube.

Plus there’s a very bad quiz where you have to guess if the actors from this version of A Christmas Carol ever appeared in Dr Who.

Robin and Juno sing Away In A Manger and manage to get most of the words right.

This Episode’s recommendation is Gossipmongers.  In my opinion it’s the funniest podcast out there.  Here’s a link:  https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/gossipmongers/id1454848064

"Another Christmas Story" - Chapter One - Good King Wenceslas - As Read By Anthony Caruso
/

Happy Thursday, Christmas fanatics! Welcome to the second official installment of Another Christmas Story!

This week, the author of this holiday rom-com himself, our very own Anthony, will read to all of you Chapter One of our tale, entitled “Good King Wenceslas”! Within this chapter, taking place ten-years after last week’s prologue, you’ll meet the characters of President Emily Williams, her Chief of Staff Anna Dreyfus, and her Press Secretary Gary Matthews, and get a hint about the problems they’re dealing with this particular Christmas Eve.

We hope you like it! (And don’t worry – this is not a political book in the slightest, despite the nature of this chapter. We just had to set up these particular characters and the world they’re inhabiting for their storyline!) If you do, make sure to share this episode and our website, upon which the text of this installment is posted, to get it in front of as many eyes as possible!

Make sure to check your podcast feeds for your regular weekly episode on Monday, in which the elves will be discussing The Long Kiss Goodnight, and next Thursday for the second official chapter of this story – “Chapter Two: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”, which our very own Thom will be reading! Christmas Is A Time When You Look At Your life Through A Magnifying Glass, And Whatever You Don't Have Feels Overwhelming. Being Alone Is So Much Lonelier At Christmas. (Mixed Nuts)
/

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! Can you believe we’re already in February? One month down in 2021 on the long journey to Christmas! Though, when you think about it, Leon Day is only Five Months away; the Fourth of July is only six months away, which is when the back to school stuff starts going back up in Target, which is a big milestone reached; and the Ber Months are only eight months away, at which point it’s all down hill! It’ll be here before you know it!

This week, after briefly touching on the Inauguration of Joe Biden and Anthony’s new Batman tattoo, the elves settle in to discuss the 1994 dark comedy film, Mixed Nuts! The elves far all over the spectrum when it comes to this American remake of a classic french film, however, with Anthony absolutely fawning over it, Julia really liking it, and Thom finding himself not impressed. Regardless, the hosts have a fun time chatting about this hysterical movie, its incredibly talented cast, and reciting quotes-a-plenty for this film which is most definitely a Christmas movie! And, Anthony makes history with the score he bestows upon it given the fact that Adam Sandler is one of its stars!

So, settle in beside your fire, close your eyes to pretend your Christmas lights are still up, relax, and kick off February with this fun-filled episode you’re sure to enjoy! And don’t forget – keep your eyes on your podcast feeds this Thursday for “Chapter One” of Another Christmas Story!

The Future of Christmas Present
/

The future of Christmas present is definitely on the minds of many as we head into the New Year. What just happened? How do we explain the Christmas we just experienced?

Try as we might to predict ahead of time what Christmas 2020 would be like we still have been flooded with feedback about the Christmas we all just went through. For many of us, it was a Christmas unlike any other in our lifetime.

But – it’s not like history has not recorded a Christmas like this.

Humanity at ChristmasIn this episode we look back to the Christmas of 1943 – a dark, unexpected, unusual and isolated Christmas that saw many separated from their families for the first time. Framed by Bing Crosby’s classic, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, the lessons of Christmas 1943 are learned through not only the sacrifices of those in our family past but also of those from every side who found a way for their humanity to command in a time of war.

We share the incredible story of a real combat mission flown over Germany on December 20th, 1943 when an American B-17 bomber commanded by Lt. Charles Brown was shredded by German air defenses and 15 German fighters. The tells the impressions of German Pilot Franz Stigler who couldn’t believe the American plane was in the air. His choices were stark: he could shoot them down and win Germany’s highest wartime honor for aviators or he could risk court martial and certain execution by allowing the B-17 to escape to safety.

It was a story not only of Christmas 1943 but one that took 50 years to resolve when Lt. Brown met Franz Stigler in the 1990s.

The lessons of humanity a there for us to learn from every Christmas. We also share a simple story of a loss we suffered on the Merry Forums – and how the discovery of our simple community taught a grieving daughter a new level of love from her Mother who spent so many years with us online.

This thoughtful episode contemplates but does not predict the Christmas coming to us next.

Instead it projects what Christmas can be — if we can only remember what it is all really about.

Episode 22 - Reindeer Games

We’re back baby!
and don’t pretend you haven’t missed us.

It’s a brand new year and what better way to get the new season off to a start than having some technical problems.  That’s right kids, you’ll be sure to notice some sound issues with this one and there’s a simple explanation. . .   I’m crap.

First off Robin and Juno sing the all time classic Jingle Bells.

Then we have an interview with the wonderful Tilly Smith who runs the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre in Scotland.  To learn a bit more here’s a link:

This week’s version of A Christmas Carol is the very forgettable (or at least I hope I can forget it) version by Pink Fong.  It’s only 5 minutes long so you may as well have a gander, here’s a link:

The recommendation is The Truth from Radiotopia.  It’s a great podcast and each episode is a different story / radio play.  I highly recommend the episode Naughty or Nice which is about some elves at the North Pole.  Here’s your link:
