In the quiz in the last episode we had a question about how many doors there are in an advent calendar and Scott Newman, our US correspondent, has done a bit of research on the subject. I have as well, and we look at a few Guinness World Records involving advent calendars.

This episode’s recommendation is Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer: Gone Fishing.  It’s a lovely show, and you don’t have to be interested in fishing to enjoy it. They’ve also got some nice Christmas specials (that weren’t filmed anywhere near Christmas). It’s on the BBC iplayer, but it’s on other streaming sites as well, so check it out.

Donna Summer for Disco and Christmas

Donna Summer has been a fascination of mine because she was on the cutting edge of electronic dance music, but since “I Feel Love” and other forays into early electronic music were produced by the legendary Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, it isn’t clear what role she played in her sound.

Last season I talked to songwriter Bruce Sudano about that among other things. Sudano also wrote songs for Summer and became her husband and manager. This week, I’m running that conversation in its entirety, including material I didn’t use then on Sudano’s entrance into show business as a member of the one-hit wonder Alive N Kickin’, who made their mark in 1970 with “Tighter, Tighter.”

He talks about learning songwriting from Tommy James, his early days with Summer, and the story behind her 1994 Christmas album, Christmas Spirit. We talked about her career path between her heyday in the late ’70s to her faith-based Christmas album.

Season 3, Episode 2 – Les Ames de Papier “Paper Souls” (Luxembourg)

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

As the wives of the Festive Fans know, the best Christmas gifts sometimes come in small packages.  The same can be said of this episode’s location — Luxembourg.  This mini country is often overlooked and forgotten, as it is wedged in between Belgium, France, and Germany.  However, most Luxembourg residents are trilingual and they enjoy a multicultural history.  Plus, although it may be tiny, Luxembourg is one of Europe’s richest countries. We share a memorable visit there as Luxembourg provides a festive backdrop of dense forests, fairy-tale castles and cobblestone streets winding through charming little towns.

We also experience a good old-fashioned ghost story.  As described in the classic holiday song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” there is an old tradition of telling “scary ghost stories” at Christmas.  This is a nod to a forgotten practice once common in Victorian England.  The Yuletide season, as we know, is often a time for looking back, reevaluating life, and making amends—which is a perfect time for a ghost story.  Winter was considered a cold, dark and spooky season, to be enjoyed only by being indoors near a roaring fire, listening to the howling winds, and trying to scare the wits out of each other.

In the movie Les Ames de Papier, Luxembourg radiates a cozy warmth that is truly magical, matched only by the supernatural elements of this film. It’s a familiar redemption story that feels a lot like A Christmas Carol.  Paul is a professional obituary writer, who is haunted by his wife’s death. He is visited by the dead husband of the woman he is falling in love with, and this ghostly encounter pushes him to deal with his own unresolved grief.

So come with us now, on this haunted adventure to an elegant place where joy shouldn’t be measured by its size alone.

Stocking Stuffer #36: Donkey Kong Country – “The Kongo Bongo Festival of Lights”

It’s been a long, hot summer, but we’re back just in time for Christmas in July! We’ve been playing the heck out of Nintendo’s new Donkey Kong Bananza game, so we thought we’d take a look at the Christmas episode of the Donkey Kong Country TV series!

“The Kongo Bongo Festival of Lights” has everything you could want out of a holiday-themed cartoon episode: A holiday-themed light display, a wacky O. Henry-esque gift-giving mishap, two warring factions coming together in the name of peace, and even a festive song or two!

So yes, we’re talking all about Donkey Kong this episode. The first half of this episode covers the Donkey Kong TV show (and also Avatar: The Way of Water, for some reason). The second half is when we pull the ripcord and just gush about Donkey Kong Bananza. Strap yourselves in, kiddos!
