Tis the Podcast

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics!

During Spooky Season 2026 here on “Tis the Podcast,” we’ve made a conscious effort to pepper in a few undisputed horror classics in our lineup, and that trend continues tonight as Julia and Anthony sit down to discuss Sam Raimi’s beloved 1981 film, “The Evil Dead.” Often considered one of the best scary movies of all time – and the beginning of the most consistently well received horror franchise – does this movie live up to its reputation for the two elves? You’ll just have to tune in to find out in a wide-ranging discussion in which they talk about everything from the amateur, low-budget filming of this movie to Sam Raimi’s inability to write women. Trust us when we say, this is one episode you don’t want to miss!

So settle back with your pumpkin spice lattes, relax, and enjoy while you can, because Spooky Season is nearly over and Christmas is just about upon us! Get excited!

As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! ❤️🍂🎃🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🚂🔔 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

What’s up, dudes? Grab your camp flashlight and whatever you do, don’t touch the plunger — we’re gonna talk Nickelodeon’s Salute Your Shorts classic “The Ghost Story / Zeke the Plumber!” I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House, Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ, and Joe Fulton the Christmas Aficionado with me to provide commentary and enjoy the ride!

It’s Camp Anawanna, June 1991, and Budnick’s weaponizing bedtime. He spins the legend of Zeke — camp custodian, parrot-bit nose, couldn’t smell a gas leak, lit a match, and became what Budnick lovingly calls a human party-popper. All that’s left is a cursed plunger: touch it, and Zeke haunts your dreams, sucking secrets out of your head like a spectral toilet-snake. Telly and Michael take the bait, the whole bunkhouse wakes up traumatized, and the campers — with Ug’s help — challenge Budnick to spend the night on Zeke’s death ground. Pranks, spider webs, a fake noseless plumber who somehow still “smells” fear… then Budnick goes full Scooby-Doo, unmasks Ug, and still somehow loses the fear-off. Shorts saluted. Nightmares achieved.

Cursed plunger? Check. Missing-nose ghost janitor? Yep. Budnick vs. spiders? Camp Anawanna, baby! So put toothpaste around your bed, spit in your hand, and slap your forehead to this episode on “The Ghost Story / Zeke the Plumber!”

Merry Christmas you beautiful people!

We begin the show by looking at a couple of songs that are Christmas songs but are not Christmas songs. The first is Hallelujah written by Leonard Cohen and the second is My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music.

Last episode I mentioned Maltesers and this episode Bob Baker explains what they are in Do You Hear What I Hear?

When I was on holiday, in the pub we were staying at there was a poem on the wall called Dorothy’s Yuletide Ode and I read it out for you.

Then it’s the triumphant return of What The Dickens, and this episode we look at the part of A Christmas Carol in which Marley’s face appears in Scrooge’s fireplace.

Then Bob returns with Where Are You Christmas? and this time he’s found it in Singapore.

Check out Bob’s podcast here:  https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com

After that we have The Christmas Quiz, I managed a magnificent 9. Remember to send in your score.

Closer to Christmas

In 2025, the veteran string band Old Crow Medicine Show released OCMS Xmas, the first Christmas album in their lengthy career. Last season, we ran part of our conversation with Ketch Sekor and Morgan Jahnig from the band about its relationship to Christmas music and the album they made, but we had so many interviews at the time that we could only run part of it.

This week, I can run it in its entirety, which I think is worth it because while the band loves its down-home sound, they’re also students of the form and its history, so some real insights and personal moments slip into the conversation. I’m also always here for a band that doesn’t hide its class consciousness.

It helps that OCMS Xmas is also a very good Christmas album with a number of slyly smart touches throughout the album.

What’s up, dudes? Grab your fold-out poster and your secret word, because we’re cracking open one of the most Christmas-adjacent kids’-mag crossovers of the late ’80s — Muppet Magazine #17, Winter 1987, the “Pee-Wee & Kermit: Playhouse Pals!” cover! I’ve got Tim Babb from Can’t Wait for Christmas  and Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House with me to talk all about it!

It’s Volume 5, Number 1 of the Henson Company’s full-color quarterly, and the cover alone is peak Saturday-morning destiny: Kermit the Frog hanging with Pee-wee Herman right when Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Muppet Babies were sharing the CBS morning lineup. Inside, Frog-In-Chief Kermit drops by the Playhouse for a visit/interview (Fred Newman on the byline vibes), Miss Piggy goes jogging with Ari Meyers and Allison Smith, Rowlf sits down with Jonathan Silverman for “Barking Beach Memoirs,” and the Muppet Babies crash Clement C. Moore with Louise Gikow and Bruce McNally’s “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Plus the pull-out that every ’80s kid fought over — “Hip Holidays from M-MTV!” featuring the Electric Mayhem — because nothing says Winter 1987 like a Muppet MTV Christmas parody and a mailbox full of Miss Piggy’s Advice.

Playhouse pals on the cover? Check. Muppet Babies night-before-Christmas comic? Got it. Fold-out Hip Holidays M-MTV poster? Definitely! So hang your Muppet Magazine on the fridge, whisper the secret word, and flip to this episode on “Muppet Magazine #17 Winter 1987!”

Tis the Podcast'

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

It is October, our second favorite time of year, where we like to skip the colorful lights and joyful noise for a few episodes and veer off down a much darker and deserted alleyway. The Festive Fans feel like Jack Skellington during this time. We have our feet firmly planted in the world of Christmas, surrounded by the traditions, music, and films we love.  However, we are still intrigued enough to visit with the monsters and the scary things that exist around the world. We want to discover places where Krampus meets Kringle and where Christmas cheer comes mixed with holiday fear.  We don’t want the question for this month’s podcast to be the same “What’s under the tree?”, it should now be “What’s hiding behind it?”

We are off to Spain, a country known for its unique Christmas traditions, Three Kings, and a beautiful display of the Nativity on the Sagrada Familia basilica.  But we are more appropriately interested in this show to their strong connection to the devil. Spain has a surprisingly deep well of satanic experiences.  We discover this starting in tonight’s movie “El Día de la Bestia”.  The story revolves around a priest who believes the Antichrist will be born in Madrid on Christmas Day. He decides that the only way to save Christmas is to find Satan first.

Next, during trivia, we discuss the Festival at El Colacho in Castrillo de Murcia, where a man portraying the Devil runs through the streets shouting insults and hitting residents with a horsetail.  Also, Catalonia has a centuries-old tradition called “Ball de Diables”, or “The Dance of the Devils”.  It grew the religious struggle between good and evil, where costumed devils would run and dance through the streets amidst fireworks and flames. Also, across parts of Spain, especially Mallorca, on January 17, it is the Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, where the festivities include the Devil’s Dance, with devils moving through the streets playing drums, along with fire and traditional celebrations. Finally, there is the Catalan correfoc, where, again, the streets are filled with fire, sparks, drums, devils and fantastic beasts. This tradition also has its roots in medieval street performances depicting the devil and his minions.

So, in Spain, the Devil isn’t necessarily hiding in the shadows. Sometimes he’s dancing through the streets, hurling curses, and surrounded by fire. It really is the epic place for us to visit this month, because sometimes Christmas needs a little darkness. And sometimes Halloween needs a little light. So tonight, we’re going to find out what happens when Christmas opens the door… and the Devil walks in.

¡Feliz Creepmas! and may all your Christmases be just a little bit terrifying!
