You need to Czech out our latest episode.  It’s heavenly!  We review the 2005 Czech film Andĕl Pánĕ and it is a hellish good time.  This festive fairy tale features Patronel, a bumbling angel; his boss God; and, a handy squad of versatile Saints, all on call.  Also, we meet Patronel’s satanic guide Urias, who observes the escalating chaos with a knowing wink and a devilsh grin.  If that is not enough entertainment, we explore other celestial celebrities such as Jezisek, Baby Jesus who flies through the window on Christmas Eve to bring gifts to the Czech children.  Also, Mikulus, the patron saint who visits Czech homes to judge the children’s behavior, accompanied by two familiar friends – an angel and a devil.  Finally, all of this is capped off by Czech singer Ewa Farna and her 2017 holiday hit “Vánoce na míru” meaning  “Christmas in Peace”.  Even after five years, it hit the top of the charts again in 2022.  So don’t miss out on all the fun – it’s like a giant birthday party for Jesus in heaven!

Seasons Eatings

This holiday treat can be found all throughout the Netherlands.  It is said that eating this treat will save you from the wrath of a goddess.  And while it’s a Christmas and New Year’s delicacy, its beginnings can be found in Jewish culture.  We’re exploring the history and origin of oliebollen.

Total Christmas

Hooray!  You’re here and I’ve missed you.

We start the episode with a lovely little Christmas memory from listener Jennifer Kay.

Then it’s Do You Hear What I Hear and our resident podcast barman Bob explains what us Brits are talking about when we say Mucking About.

Then it’s our version of A Christmas Carol and this one is an episode of Boy Meets World called A Very Topanga Christmas.  It’s okay I suppose.
You can watch a very poor version here:

After the Joke we look at Christmas dinner in the Czech Republic and they have some very interesting customs.

Then Bob gives another simple way to keep that Christmas spirit all through the year.

And then we have The Quiz. I scored 9, see if you can do better.

This episode’s recommendation is Desert Island Discs, it’s a BBC radio programme that has been running for over 60 years.  There over a thousand episodes featuring some very famous people.

Pumpkin Spice Round Two: Seth Conquers Trader Joe’s Snacks

Christmas Cousins

Welcome to episode 87 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about the 1983 movie, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” and its soundtrack.

As I said in the episode, this one has been a long time coming. August was the first time since I started my podcast that I missed putting out an episode. I haven’t even been able to stay active on social media due to a lack of time and an excess of pain. I’m finally on the mend, though, so I hope to be back on track soon.

If you haven’t seen “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” I truly recommend it. It has some outstanding performances, a wonderful score, and tackles a wide variety of themes. Plus, getting to see David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto on screen together is a real treat.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Breaking News: Hallmark’s 2023 Holiday Movie List just announced…Seth is officially overwhelmed!

Christmas Cousins

Well friends, we did it. This week we cross Home Alone 4 off our list, a film we’ve honestly been dreading for quite some time. It took us nine years, but we finally watched every Home Alone film.

Home Alone 4 was meant to be a backdoor pilot for a Home Alone TV series, ultimately never picked up for a full season. And thank goodness, because this is far and away the worst thing the franchise has ever produced. With the wholly unrelated Home Alone 3 a distant memory, we return to the McCallister clan and an all-new adventure in which Wet/Sticky Bandit Marv once again tries to burgle a home occupied by young Kevin.

Hijinks—if you want to call them that—ensue. We’re sorry. Feel our pain.

What’s up, dudes? 40 years ago, the Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade was broadcast live on National TV! Disney connoisseurs Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House and Charlie Ague from Closer to Christmas and Ague Designs are here with me to break it down!

Joan Lunden and Mike Douglas host this 1983 Christmas parade with narration written by Doug Cody. The production was directed by Chico Fernandez. Tinkerbell opened the show, and Cinderella and her entourage processed down Main Street USA. Pinocchio and the Jungle Book crews followed right behind her.

The Alice in Wonderland performers come next, along with Herbie the Love Bug and a Dumbo’s Circus float. Soon followed the World Champion Percheron horses hitched to wagon commissioned by Disney. Goofy drove his jalopy immediately afterward, and Robin Hood and his Merry Men succeeded him.

After Carol Lawrence and the Voices of Liberty Singers performed at Epcot, Mary Poppins and Cruella de Vil glide down Main Street. The toy soldiers from “Babes in Toyland” march along, and Mickey and Minnie ride a coach behind them. Donald, Snow White, and Mrs. Claus follow on floats, accompanied by characters from Peter Pan, Chip and Dale, and the Hundred Acre Wood. Finally, Santa Claus himself flew in to close out the celebration.

Victorian garb? Check. Anthropomorphic bipedal reindeer? Yep. Endless commercials from Days Inn and Eastern Airlines? Definitely! So grab your a add and top hat, hop on a float, and ride down Main Street USA to this episode all about the Very Merry Christmas Parade!
