150 Days. Christmas Thoughts. It’s not just a day.

Closer to Christmas

What’s up, dudes? Kim Cooper from Planning for Christmas and Holiday Seasons is with me to dive into the Better Homes and Gardens Christmas issue from December 1985! It’s a Christmas across America, as the publication presents a treasury of Yuletide gifts, decorations, and traditions!

Founded in 1922, the magazine became known as one of the Seven Sisters, geared towards married women and homemakers. This issue focuses on stylings from New England, the Midwest, the South, and the Southwest. Page after page is dedicated to Nativity piñatas, table settings, crocheted Christmas signs and more!

Following that, all the food contest winners are announced one each category. Each contestant won a prize, with the winners hitting a $1000. In 1985 money, that’s quite a haul. Meanwhile, a ton of cigarette ads adorn the pages of the magazine. We also get a look at quite a few families who work to better their neighborhoods and cities! Joy to the world, indeed!

Recipes? Check. Grocery ads? Yep. Tips on keeping holiday weight off? Only if it’s got a drawing of a skinny Santa! So grab your M&Ms, craft your own decorations, and prep for a Better Homes and Gardens Christmas party with this episode!

What’s up, dudes? Merry Christmas in July! He’s a Mr. Rogers colleague who went on to become a national treasure! Yes, it’s Ernie Coombs! CJ Bélanger from Rose Suchak Ladder joins me to talk about a Mr. Dressup Christmas!

In this 1989(?) episode, Hisani Clarke and Alyson Court join the titular host for a Christmas tree trimming party. Alyson goes to bake Christmas cookies while Hisani shovels snow. Meanwhile, the puppet Casey and Mr. Dressup sing O Christmas Tree and Deck the Hall. Following that, the puppets Aunt Bird and Alligator Al present their homemade ornaments of a snow heron and magic elf.

Subsequently, Truffles and Dressup make a wonderful paper snowflake ornament. Finnegan is surprised when the magic elf ornament plays Jingle Bells. The lovable host reads a story of a little forest mouse who helps a lost elf and is rewarded by Santa. Once all the ornaments are complete and the tree fully adorned, they all sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

Nostalgic magic? Check. Creative crafts? Got ‘em. Argyle sweater vests? Only the best! So grab your scissors, make your own ornament, and trim the tree to this episode on Mr. Dressup Christmas!

Seasons Eatings

This Ethiopian meal is full of flavour and spice.  Its origin can be traced back to over 1000 years ago.  While the ingredients are simple, this dish is usually made for special occasions.  It’s eaten with a spongy flatbread to soak up all the rich juices.  We’re exploring the history and origins of doro wat.

Christmas Chapters

A new season of Twelve Songs begins with a conversation that is, frankly, more about AI—artificial intelligence—than it is Christmas music, but since we’re six months from the holiday, it seems like a good time for this conversation.

Last year, I interviewed Steven Wilson of the British prog rock band Porcupine Tree about “December Skies,” a song he recorded on his own with lyrics written in part by Chat GPT, an AI program. We talked about the whys and hows and considered some of the issues connected to AI. At a time when the reflexive stance toward it is skeptical, I was glad to talk to an artist who is working out a more nuanced relationship to it.

Part of this interview ran last year, but this is the first chance I’ve had to run it in its entirety.

This conversation has become more relevant with the success of the AI “group” Velvet Sundown and the recent controversy over an AI imitation of the rock band Toto appearing for a short time on the band’s Spotify page.

The episode ends with The Soul Duo’s “Just a Sad Xmas,” which is on sale now through the Numero Group.
