Welcome to episode 30 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this special Ko-fi patron-sponsored episode, I talk about the 1965 album, “Christmas Young Party,” by Columbia All Stars.

As I state in the episode, this is an album I searched for for quite a long time. It definitely didn’t disappoint. I’ve actually had it for several months, and I even shared the cover on Instagram back in April. I was going to feature a children’s album I actually received in my latest shipment, but I decided to go with Columbia All Stars instead. It’s a much better album, and it better reflects how much I appreciate the support. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate any feedback I receive.

As promised, here’s the video for Karou Chiga’s “Midnight Guitar.”

Also, don’t forget to check out Christmas on Vinyl, both on Instagram and Mixcloud.

Thanks for listening, and I hope “Christmas Young Party” brought you a little yuletide cheer. In my neck of the woods, it looks like it will finally start feeling like fall later this week. That always gets me in the mood for more Christmas music. I’ll be working on my next episode throughout the week, and picking up Norah Jones’s “I Dream of Christmas” this Friday. Between that and the albums I didn’t get to listen to enough last year, I should have plenty of Christmas music to listen to when I’m not listening to Christmas music for the podcast. Speaking of which, be sure to tune back in on the 25th when I discuss Ohashi Trio’s 2013 album, “Magic.” It’s one of the best and most original Christmas albums from the 2010’s, so you don’t want to miss it.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Any proceeds or donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Seasons Eatings

There are few dishes as universally loved as this dish. And for some, the holidays wouldn’t be the same with a large casserole almost overflowing with a combination of noodles, milk, and cheese. The warm and gooey pasta dish serves as a savory side, a stunning main and is widely enjoyed by even the pickiest of young eaters. While it has established itself as an American classic, its surprisingly lengthy history pre-dates the country and is as diverse as the many ways one can cook it. We exploring the history and origins of macaroni and cheese.

OI YOU.  YEAH YOU, I’M TALKING TO YOU.
COME AND LISTEN TO MY PODCAST.
DO IT NOW!

It’s another episode of the TCP and we have loads of crap for your lovely ears.

First off it’s our Top Ten Christmas Movies Lists.  We’ve had a team of scientists develop a formula to calculate the best list in Jack’s opinion.  This episode we have lists from Anthony Caruso and Mike Westfall.  Where will their lists chart?

Then it’s time for the Yule Log.  If you love Nick Offerman from Parks and Recreation then you might not mind this version.  It’s Nick sitting by a fire drinking whisky for 45 minutes straight.

We have the return of Santa Claus is NOT Coming to Town and this one was sent in by Paul Hudebine.  He can pinpoint to the exact day he found out the truth about Santa.  Not only that, it’s also the day his mum told him wrestling is fake.

Frank the Tank has sent us another Curious Christmas Custom, this time it’s Bonfires on the Levee.  Hundreds of bonfires are lit along the Mississippi on Christmas Eve to guide the way for Papa Noel.

We have another great song from Rich Chambers;  It’s Christmastime (All Over The World).  He also shares a great story of the time he actually saw Rudolph and the other reindeer flying over his house.
Have a listen:

Then it’s another Muppet Christmas Special.  This time we look at The Bells of Fraggle Rock and it’s absolutely delightful.  Have a watch here:

This episode’s recommendation is The Cabinet of Dr Calighoulie from friend of the show Tony Dixon.  If you’re a fan of Halloween, you’ll love it.

This week we’re going to look at songs that are just plain weird. Not songs that are written to be funny, but songs that are sung un-ironically and just don’t make much sense. Artists include Yogi Yorgesson, Fake Shark Real Zombie, and Max Headroom. Also, we play the most bizarre Christmas song we’ve ever heard by Wing.

Welcome to episode 29 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I discuss Koga Records’ 2020 compilation, “Happy Christmas from Shimokita.” This is a great collection of songs produced during the height of the pandemic last year. It’s a mostly upbeat, optimistic compilation, which makes it stand out from most of the similarly-themed Christmas music I heard last year.

I started collecting Japanese Christmas music close to two years ago now and I’ve managed to get a pretty wide variety of albums. I haven’t covered a lot of contemporary music as of yet, so I was looking forward to this episode. While most of the bands here lean toward Rock or Punk, it’s still a fairly eclectic collection with a diverse blend of styles and sounds.

As I mention in the episode, a couple of the songs have music videos. I really enjoy the video for Moshimo’s “Holy Night.” It conveys a lot of what’s in the lyrics and gives an idea of their energetic performances that have added to their popularity.

Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoyed “Happy Christmas from Shimokita.” You can find most of the bands on YouTube and social media, so if you like what you heard, be sure to look them up. I’ll be back on the 25th with Ohashi Trio’s 2015 album, “Magic.” Prior to that, though, I’ll be releasing a special patron-sponsored episode thanks to the Ko-fi donations I received last month. Both albums are great, so be sure to check them out.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

TGI Podcast

It’s now October, and that means our Christmas podcast will return in about a month! But first, here’s a Halloween treat.

Growing up, I’d spend a lot of time each Halloween season at Kmart, and I always bought whatever Halloween cassettes they had for sale. Most were terrible, aside from a few classics that still remain on my shelf. But this episode features one of my favorites, The Old Gray Goose.

This tape was released in 1999. It features a guy (the Gray Goose) who tells stories and sings songs. Most of the stories were familiar tales that we’d been telling each other for years, but I hadn’t heard a few of these. Overall, it’s just a really cool collection and is something I still listen to every year.

A few years ago, I hooked up a cassette player to my computer to create these files; however, it seems this was also released on CD, so I really should just track that down. This cassette rip is pretty rough. Still, the times I’ve checked, it hasn’t been the easiest thing to find online, so I figured it’d make a cool podcast post, even with the tape noise.

I didn’t record an intro or anything. I figured people may want to play this with family or at a party, and you don’t need my voice on here messing it up. So it’s simply the two sides of the tape. Here’s the track list:

1 Goose Introduction
2 Shipwreck
3 Medical College
4 Oscar, The Lightheaded Pumpkin
5 The Graveyard
6 The Hike
7 The Passing Of David Holt
8 Ride Of Terror
9 The Butcher
10 Emily’s Nightmare
11 39 Steps & The Blue Room
12 Mystery Church
13 Graveyard Song
14 Goose Farewell

Title: Being Normal Is Vastly Overrated. (Halloweentown)

Happy October everyone! In today’s episode I share a listener’s memory from a cozy farm in Canada and he tells us about how his town welcomes Christmas. Then I head over to Portugal and share a couple of fun Christmas traditions the town of Braga has on Christmas eve. Finally, I read the essay Old Thoughts for Christmas by Christopher Morley. Published during the Christmas season after the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Morley ponders the gift of peace and the need for kindness after such a horrific world war – and finds that Christmas can bring these things to us.

And be sure to keep an eye out on the youtube channel this week as I’ll be posting a video review of the book Mrs. Claus and the Santaland Slayings by Liz Ireland.
