Welcome to Episode 22 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this year’s Christmas in July episode, I once again cover a variety of summer-themed or summery-sounding Christmas songs from a diverse group of artists. I had a lot of fun tracking down these songs, adding them to my collection, and then learning a bit more about the artists behind them. A couple of these are literally the only copy I’ve found of the record or CD, so I’m glad I was able to share them.

This is part three of The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

It’s the Christmas holidays at Penlyon Place! In part three of the story, there are several Christmas meals and celebrations that Sir John, Danby, Miss Hawberk and the three children attend. Sir John and the youngest child Moppet continue to form a loving bond. These chapters overflow with Christmas cheer and is definitely worth making some hot chocolate while you listen.

Welcome to episode 21 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I cover Ryoko Moriyama’s 1975 album, “Christmas Hymnbook II.” This is the third of four episodes dedicated to Ryoko Moriyama, and the second of her two hymnbook albums. This album features more traditional hymns in her classical style, and has a couple wonderful songs that were new to me. It’s easily as good as her first hymnbook album and is a great way to take your mind off the summer heat.

Episode 34 – Little Drummer Boy

Hello you beautiful person!

It’s another fun filled episode of the TCP.

We start with a very crappy version of A Christmas Carol. This was part of the ‘Tales from Dickens’ TV series and stars Basil Rathbone as an actor who’s career has fallen so far that he’s reduced to wearing a traffic cone on his head to play Ebenezer Scrooge.

We have another Joke from Benji Pearson.

Then it’s the return of Santa Claus is NOT Coming to Town.  I had to scour the internet for stories and managed to find a half decent one.  When will parents learn that when it comes to Santa, you can lie your way out of anything.

Next up we look at a lovely cover version of the Bowie and Crosby classic Little Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth.  This one was recorded for Children in Need and sees two stalwarts of British broadcasting, Aled Jones and Terry Wogan.

Whilst researching the little drummer boy I found out about The Little Drummer Boy challenge, and also Whamageddon.  Both are games where you try to avoid hearing the song during the festive season.

The Christmas Hirelings Part 2: Chapters 3-4

In these chapters, we find out what happens on the first day that three children come to stay with Sir John Penlyon for Christmas. Will he further shut off his broken heart from them or will they charm their way through his gruff exterior?

Due to life being crazy and my inability to read a calendar correctly (long story, don’t ask) I don’t think I’m going to be able to get another regular episode out on Monday this week, but no worries, I will have part 3 of this story out next Friday. I’ll also be taking a vacation at the end of July/early August, so there will be a couple weeks break.
