Total Christmas

Hello you beautiful people!

The show begins with not quite a version of A Christmas Carol, called Jeff Dunham’s Scrooged Up Holiday Special. The premise is that ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is going to do a version of A Christmas Carol and in this show he is casting the characters using some of his different characters. I watched it on Amazon, but this link gives you some more info:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33746385/

Then it’s Do You Hear What I Hear and our resident barman, Bob Baker, talks about the British term ‘Gaffer’,

Next up is The Christmas Quiz and we’ve changed things a little bit.

Then it’s Where Are You Christmas? and this time Bob has found it in Switzerland, home of a huge diorama of the Christmas story.

Check out Bob’s podcast here:  https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com

This episode I have something a little different, and I share with you some of my favourite Christmas tree ornaments a tell you a little history about them.  If you want to tell me about your favourite ornament send me an email.

Christmas Everyday

The new season begins with versions of Darlene Love’s Christmas classic. We hear the song we’ve known forever and ones that I think offer an interesting twist on the original. The episode doesn’t include the versions by U2, Years, and Jewel Scheme though I’m entertained by all of them, and if you like the versions by Death Cab for Cutie, Suede Silver, Liela Moss and Chicken Happen, you can find them on Bandcamp.

The episode starts with “Secret Box” by Masato Saito, and in the episode I mention my interview with Scott Leopold, the host of the “Holly Jolly X’masu” podcast.

Closer to Christmas

It’s Christmas in July here on the podcast, and we’re back discussing that most eternal of all holiday classics: Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. More specifically, we’re taking a look at the 1979 made-for-TV movie An American Christmas Carol.

This adaptation transposes the story into 1930s New England, where the town miser is Benedict Slade, played by Henry Winkler. The film first aired in December of 1979, in the middle of Happy Days‘ seventh season, which explains why roughly half of the film takes place during the “Christmas Past” sequence. Winkler was not about to put on the old man makeup any longer than he had to! ALSO! Have they ever done a “Christmas Carol” adaptation starring Dracula? Let’s talk about that.

Pa-Rum, Pum-Pum, Pum! Santa’s Got A Six Pack! (Regular Show Christmas Episodes)

Tis the Podcast'

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X’masu here to talk the jangle pop/alternative rock album by the Chris Stamey Group “Christmas Time!” After a stint with the dB’s, Chris Stamey went out on his own as a solo artist. He invited his former bandmates back for a fun Christmas album.

“Christmas Time” was released as a 7-song vinyl EP under the credit Chris Stamey Group with Special Guests The dB’s. The EP mixed original songs with inventive takes on Christmas music, emphasizing chorused and reverbed guitars, melodic power pop, and quirky holiday charm. The record was mostly comprised of original tunes, the exception being a reworking of Deck the Hall by Cathy Harrington called Sha La La (Deck the Halls)Something Came Over Me is a reflective, melodic original that balances bittersweet lyrics with shimmering guitars and sophisticated pop arrangements. The opening title track is a bright, jangly power-pop original featuring Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple’s harmonies, chiming guitars, and an infectious holiday hook that perfectly captures the warmth and excitement of Christmas.

The Only Law That Santa Claus Understood is a witty folk-pop original by Ted Lyons that pairs clever storytelling with acoustic instrumentation and understated charm, offering one of the collection’s most unique lyrical perspectives. Snow Is Falling is a lush, atmospheric ballad featuring bass ostinato and Mary’s haunting lead vocal, slowly building into a dreamy meditation on the quiet beauty and peaceful solitude of a snowy Christmas evening. Both are followed by the acoustic guitar instrumental It’s a Wonderful Life which quotes What Child is This? to end on a remarkable, intriguing disquiet.

Keyboards? Yep. Guitars? Got ‘em. Outlaw wild west Santa? For sure! So grab your record player, put on “Christmas Time,” and listen to this episode!

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

Oops.  We goofed but it is all fixed!

Sorry we’re late.  We just got back from traveling — time traveling.  Oh, and apologies for the sound in our cooking segment.  We were too excited baking to speak into our microphones.  Also, thank you to Sue Macinnes and La Belle Vie for her outstanding hospitality and holding our hands through the piragi process.

Onto our Star-Spangled Spectacular.  We decided to piggyback on the recent 4th of July hype.  We know the 250th birthday of the United States is a fairly decent milestone. We applaud it. We’ve done a lot — you know, the Revolutionary War, the transatlantic railroad, moon landings, microwave popcorn, blah, blah, blah.  It’s all pretty impressive.

But hey, listen, you can’t just sneer at a podcast about Christmas in foreign countries.  I mean, it’s no beacon of democracy or the birth of a nation, I get that, but we have lasted three years at a time when the failure rate for podcasts is 90%. And we talk about foreign movies. Let us say that again and slower, “Foreign Movies”.  You know, the subtitled ones.

I mean, not to diminish the revolutionary hullabaloo, but the Founding Fathers had a moral purpose, young patriots, and an entire continent to work with. The Festive Fans?  We’ve got Jake and a couple of microphones.  If anything, the odds seem to be more stacked against us.  I know the young Americans had to battle the British, but, c’mon, we have to overcome public disinterest and apathy. Is that a fair fight?

In 1776, some colonists boldly declared they wanted to be independent. Well, in 2023, two Christmas and movie enthusiasts showed that same streak of rebellion when they looked at each other and declared, “I bet people want to listen to us discuss festive movies from places like Bosnia, Panama, Iceland, Rwanda … all year long.”  And today, we celebrate that fierce spirit to free ourselves from the shackles of authority and convention.  Let freedom ring and let Christmas be celebrated in different ways and different places.  Hurrah!

Both of these events required an extraordinary leap of faith and at least one person saying, “this sounds like a terrible idea … but I’m in. (Thanks Mark).  America may be an imperfect union. It has endured wars, depressions, Cop Rock, and social media, and God bless it. Well, the The Festive Foreign Film Fans has been a similar experience. We have tolerated lengthy films that should never have been made and the names of places that are unpronounceable, but we did not back down.

So yes, the United States turned 250.  It’s a big deal and unquestionably historic. However, somewhere in a basement studio filled with Christmas decorations right now in the middle of a hot summer, there is another party taking place.  It’s a toast to three years of festive adventures. It’s a salute to three years of exploring how the world celebrates Christmas. It’s a celebration of three years of honest friendship, laughter, and holiday cheer.

So let’s raise a glass to the U.S. and 4F, two young upstarts who dreamed of making it big out on their own.  Sometimes they really do it.  Cheers!
