Sloan

Chris Murphy of the Canadian indie rock band Sloan describes them as “a cult band,” but they’re a cult band with legs. They started in 1991 and recently released their 14th album, Based on the Best Seller.

This week Murphy talks about how a band with kids and members in their 50s works, and what democracy looks like in a band. Murphy talks about the fake B-movie trailers the band shot to draw attention to songs from the new album, and they’re well worth seeing.

We also hear part of three songs from Based on the Best Seller:

1. “Live Forever”

2. “Dream Destroyer”

3. “Capitol Cooler”

Of course, we also talked about their Christmas recordings and a possible Christmas album.

In the episode, I mentioned a story that quotes me on programming all-Christmas radio and Christmas playlists.

Superboy “Young Dracula” (w/ CM Chuck)

What’s up, dudes? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night! He’s here with me to talk the Superboy “Young Dracula” episode and kick off spooky season!

A mysterious stranger, Dr. Byron Shelley, comes to town, and immediately has an effect on Lana Lang. After a brief encounter with Clark, Byron is attacked by an older vampire. Superboy saves him and Lana, and take whim to his apartment.

Subsequently, Byron tells Superboy he’s a half-vampire, and his father is looking for him. The older vampire was sent by his father to bring Byron home. He appears as most, and after biting Byron, tries to glamour Superboy into doing his bidding. Superboy instead flies him into space where the sun destroys him.

Intense staring? Check. Melodramatic glamouring? Got it. Over the top vampire costuming? Definitely! So grab your cape, take your serum, and resist vampires with this episode on Superboy “Young Dracula!”

Christmas Songs by The Cure (w/ Michael May)

What’s up, dudes? Hey you! Michael May from After Lunch, Crestwood House, and Hellbent for Letterbox is with me to talk Robert Smith! Yes we’re digging into Christmas songs by The Cure!

On December 9, 1987, The Cure came out for a fourth encore and blasted through a cover of “Merry Christmas Everybody” by Slade. It was the final song on the third night at Wembley, the final show of The Kissing Tour.

Delving deeper, many of their songs allude to Christmas or romanticize Christmas as a state of happiness and content. For example, “Let’s Go to Bed,” Christmas is the metaphor for physical excitement and anticipation. Further, in “Other Voices,” a song about the sickness of lust, the protagonist asks his paramour to come around at Christmas for a festive compromise.

Similarly, in “Hey, You,” Smith asks the one who looks like Christmas to come kiss him.  “The Snakepit” and “Last Dance” also reflect themes of nostalgia and melancholy and Christmas.

Driving basslines? Check. Layered guitar and synths? Got ‘em. Eye liner and lipstick? Definitely! So grab your ax, play a catchy riff, and jam out to this episode on Christmas songs by The Cure!
