Sounds of Christmas

Total Christmas

It’s a packed episode filled with all sorts.

We begin with a look at the Cornish custom of Star Gazy Pie.  It’s not the most appetising pie you’ll ever see, but it has a great history.

Then our Podcast Barman Bob Baker takes a look at Caskets and Coffins.

Next it’s our yearly tradition of looking at Seth’s Christmas Ghost Stories produced by Biblioasis.
If you want to win the latest 3 books in the series email me with the following…
“Yeah, I’ll ave em”.
Check out the lovely little books here:
https://www.biblioasis.com/product-category/fiction/seths-christmas-ghost-stories/

In last episode’s quiz I had never heard of the song Christmas Through Your Eyes by Gloria Estefan, so we take a look at the song, which was a B-side to the Miami Mega Mix.

Want to watch a badly acted operatic version of A Christmas Carol?  Then check out Mr Scrooge from South Carolina ETV.
Here’s a link:

Next up Bob is back with Spread A Smile of Joy and he talks about giving blood.  It’s a great way to save a life.

Then it’s The Christmas Quiz and you get to test yourself against the lovely Jeanie Mulligan from Ireland .

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

The Festive Fans are getting steamy this episode, but not in the way you might think.  Unless you mean a penis panic.  The boys are off to the balmy island state of Singapore where the Christmas celebrations are full of warm memories, but mostly from the temperature.  This tropical country is over the top in its Yule-themed festivities, from the Orchard Road Street Party to the Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay.  Bob knows this, because he experienced it firsthand when he traveled there in December.

The two also have time to go shopping, or, more specifically, to review the film “Gone Shopping”, which takes place at Christmastime.  It is an examination of three lonely individuals, the stereotypes and prejudices of the culture, and the familiar Singaporean pastime of shopping.  While not festive, it does allow the 4F crew to explore the country’s holiday traditions with their own unique Asian twist.   Singapore is a place where they embrace a white Christmas so much, they fake it by using foam snow.  Join us to see how this country celebrates in a way that is truly magical and an extravaganza of lights, sound and spectacle.

What’s up, dudes? It’s a Sherman Hemsley vehicle about a small Philadelphia church. Yes, it’s an Amen Christmas, and Joe Fulton the Christmas Aficionado is with me to wax poetic about it! Well…or at least reminisce about watching it. From December 1986, it’s “Your Christmas Show of Shows!”

It’s Christmas, and Philadelphia’s First Community Church is preparing a Nativity play. They’ve sent out invitations to local celebrities and politicians and one has finally responded positively! Unfortunately, they only have two days to get it ready. Oh, and Deacon Frye has insulted and run off the director!

The staff works hard to finish the preparations for the show, but a freak snow storm prevents the film crew from attending. Of course, the staff is heartbroken. The children, however, are unfazed, and perform the pageant with zeal and joy. Moved by the sweet innocence of the youth, the staff join in singing “Away in a Manger.”

Homemade knit socks? Check. Hand seen costumes and individually typed programs? Got ‘em. Judy Winslow? Umm…yes? So grab your costume, give your best animal noise, and sing along to this Amen Christmas episode!

Welcome to episode 123 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Mami Horie’s 2010 album, “The Swingin’ Christmas.”

I hope you liked Mami Horie’s album as much as I do. There are some real gems here, and I’m glad I was finally able to share it with you. I can’t help but wonder about what derailed her career, and just how big a star she would have been if that hadn’t happened. On a positive note, based on one of the interviews I read, she seems to have had a happy, successful life despite the early setback.

Join me next time for another fantastic album, Hiroko Williams’ “My Room For Christmas” from 2016. It’s another wonderful vocal album that took forever to get. Then listen in next month as I devote all of November to guitar legend Takeshi Terauchi. I’ll be covering his Christmas releases from the 1960s, and his two albums from the 70s and 80s. Trust me when I say you don’t want to miss them.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

And don’t forget to order your limited-edition Kringle Krew ornament. All of us at the Christmas Podcast Network wanted to do something special this year, so we came together to offer our listeners the chance to help us spread some holiday cheer. Not only do you get the beautiful ornament pictured below, but 100% of the proceeds go to the Red Sled Santa Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income, at-risk, medically-challenged, and terminally ill children during the holiday season. We have a limited number of these ornaments available, so be sure to order yours now, and help us bring a little love and magic to some children in need. From all of us at the Christmas Podcast Network, thank you for your generosity and support. Together, we can help create unforgettable Christmas memories.

For many Christmas eve is the main meal for the holiday season.  This dish started with a member of the carrot family but is now made mainly made from beets.  While it’s consumed all year long, hot and cold, there’s a special version made on Christmas.  We’re exploring the history and origins of barszcz.

Christmas Clatter

Guess what, folks? Christmas Clatter is returning for another round of holiday cheer! Todd’s got some exciting stuff lined up for this season. He’ll be spilling the tea on why the show’s run is a bit shorter this year, and he’s also going to share his thoughts on a new Christmas song by Brett Eldredge. Todd thinks it’s an instant classic, so you know it’s going to be good!

Brett Eldredge, known for his smooth, rich voice, has become a holiday favorite with his Christmas music. He first introduced fans to his festive sound in 2016 with the release of *Glow*, an album blending timeless Christmas standards and original songs with a big band, jazz-inspired flair. Tracks like “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (featuring Meghan Trainor) showcased his crooner style, evoking the charm of Frank Sinatra.

*Glow*’s success led to a deluxe edition in 2018, with additional tracks, and Eldredge has since headlined the *Glow* tour, bringing the spirit of his holiday music to live audiences. His Christmas sound is known for its nostalgic warmth, highlighted by brass, strings, and that classic swing rhythm, making it stand out among traditional country holiday offerings.

In 2021, Eldredge followed up with *Mr. Christmas*, blending original songs, like the title track, with beloved holiday classics. Both albums were met with praise from fans who admire his ability to capture the magic of the season through big-band arrangements and jazz-infused melodies.

Now, Eldredge is back with his third holiday album, *Merry Christmas (Welcome to the Family)*. This new collection, released under his own label, Warm and Cozy Records, features eight original songs, including “Sweet December,” which Todd of Christmas Clatter has declared an instant classic.
