Christmas Cousins

Welcome to the start of Season 5! Today I kick off the new season by reading Christmas traditions and memories from one of my listeners who lives in Australia. I really enjoyed what Shelly sent me, so I thought this would be a great thing to share with all of you. She talks about her families traditions, Christmas foods, how they maintain the spirit of Christmas even though the sun is scorching the themometer, and more.

There’s also a few updates I share, including the news that our Cozy Christmas Book Club is currently voting on our first read of the year. Head over to The Cozy Christmas Book Club on facebook and vote now!

What’s up, dudes? Adam Pope from Wizards! The Podcast Guide to Comics and The Retro Network (Geekster) is here to talk about the unbelievable phenomenon that was Teddy Ruxpin! It’s Ken Forsse’s terrific talking teddy bear…no, Illiop! In fact, there was a even a special presentation book with matching Santa outfit called “Teddy Ruxpin’s Christmas!”

In the land of Grundo, the anthropomorphic bear Teddy Ruxpin and his Octopede friend Grubby help us earthlings to celebrate Christmas. They immediately launch into a medley of carols: “Here we Come A’Wassaling”, “Deck the Halls”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, and “Good King Wenceslas.” Newton Gimmick and friends join up with the duo, and the gang sing a special Grundo version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Grubby jokes of running out legs while keeping track of days in the song, and Gimmick begins a medley of “Carol of the Bells” and “Jingle Bells.”

Ever the comedian, Grubby complains his ears are still ringing. Meanwhile, the friends are joined by another group of carolers. They perform “O Christmas Tree” and Gimmick subsequently suggests that Teddy and Grubby tell the story of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The choir bids us farewell singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

Cassettes? Check. Books? Need ‘em. Obligatory Santa outfit and carol sing? For sure! So grab your Illiop, call your Octopede friend, and sing along with this Teddy Ruxpin Christmas episode!

Seasons Eatings

This sweet treat can be found in the candy dishes of many grandma’s homes. Its origin has been lost to history but the mechanism used for this candy was created in America. The creator of this machine may be the bane of many children. The candy’s extremely brittle consistency makes it easy to break off a piece for sharing. We’re discovering the history and origins of ribbon candy.

Title: CWFC 123 – Advent

This reminds us of when we reviewed a film from Turkey in November, now February is Black History month in the States and we just happen to be covering our first film on the African continent.  Today we travel to Lagos, Nigeria for an entertaining Christmas rom com that features all of the classic Hallmark movie tropes – boys meeting and losing girls, misunderstandings, maternal meddling, corporate greed, and a best friend crush.  Plus, there is the annual holiday festival that teaches everyone about love, kindness and the meaning of Christmas.

While a seeming cliche, “A Naija Christmas” has a bit more heft.  It is festive and heart-warming to watch three brothers compete to fulfill their Mother’s wish to see her sons married.  However, the real Christmas present is being introduced to a different, more genuine side of Nigeria.  There are no money-seeking Nigerian princes or corrupt warlords here, but three familiar young men who tease, argue, and fight like brothers do, but also look out for and take care of each other.  They have their normal struggles at work, with their girlfriends, and taking care of their aging Mama.  These are real-life scenarios that all can viewers relate to, butnwe are also treated to the honest cultural issues of class, gender and faith found in Nigeria.

We also explore local customs like Detty December, Christmas rice, and knockouts and fireworks on Christmas Eve.  We meet the Nigerian Father Christmas, who gives out his gifts by hand or by throwing them into the air instead of delivering them at night.  Last, we enjoy the song “Y’ello Christmas” by Nigerian-born Moelogo because the color yellow in Africa represents happiness, harmony and culture.

Festive

Welcome to episode 104 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, for Black History Month, I talk about the 1993 album, “Merry Christmas Wish,” by the American R&B trio, A.S.A.P.

I hope you enjoyed “Merry Christmas Wish.” I was thrilled when I found it, mainly because of how few English versions there are of these songs I’ve been collecting over the past several years. This is a fun, solid album and it lets me throw some Japanese songs into my regular Christmas playlist without any pushback from my kids, who sometimes get annoyed when they don’t understand the lyrics.

Be sure to join me next month when I cover a pair of albums by jazz singer Akiko for Women’s History Month. Up first is her 2007 album, “A White Album.” Then join me on the 25th for her 2017 release, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” They’re both great albums and you’re sure to like them.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
