Hold on to your pumpkin spice lattes, folks—it’s time for Trader Joe’s Fall Haul: Dessert Edition! This time, we’re not going it alone. We’ve invited superfan Christmas Cousin Lee to join us on this sugary adventure. ‘

Will Cousin Seth manage to keep his cool or gag at the thought of pumpkin-flavored sweets? Will Lee be able to focus on the tasting or be too starstruck by Seth’s podcasting prowess? And most importantly, will these pumpkin desserts live up to their hype or crumble under the pressure?

Join us for some serious (and not-so-serious) dessert tasting as we dive into pumpkin treats that could either be gourd-geous or… just plain gourd-awful. Spoiler: things are about to get messy.

Don’t forget to stick around and let us know what you think of the Trader Joe’s fall lineup in the comments!

Audience Question:

Cousins out there, what’s your favorite fall dessert from Trader Joe’s (or anywhere)? Did Seth gag too much or just enough?

Tell us your thoughts, leave us a rating and review on iTunes, and don’t forget to follow us on Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook (@christmascousinspod)! Also, email us at christmascousinspod@gmail.com with your favorite fall treats!

Americana artist Mindy Smith has been referred to on 12 Songs before. At some point in the COVID years I talked about my love of “Santa Will Find You” from her 2007 album My Holiday, and last year when I talked to The Indigo Girls, we talked about the song “It Really Is (a Wonderful Life,)” which they recorded. It turns out it was written by Chely Wright, but the only version I knew was Smith’s from My Holiday.

For me, this was an interview I had long looked forward to, and it was made possible by the release of Quiet Town, her first album in 12 years. The album will be out tomorrow, though the song we play, “Something to Write in Stone,” is out now along with two other songs. On October 4, it will all be for sale.

In the episode, I mention the heartbreaking (to me) Snowflakes Christmas Singles Club on Bandcamp, which I just heard will have two new singles available this year.

Mindy Smith will be on tour much of the rest of 2024, and you can find out where she’ll be at MindySmithMusic.com.

It’s the Christmas Cousins’ 150th episode, and what better way to celebrate than with a true “Sethrospective”!

Cousin Seth walks us through his Top 5 favorite moments from the show, as we look back at his finest (and most ridiculous) highlights…we even have a surprise guest!

And in true Christmas Cousins fashion, no one could be bothered to pull actual clips—so we’re relying entirely on Seth’s memory of the events. Think of it as the laziest milestone episode ever… and that’s why we love it.

So grab a nog, lean back, and join us as we reminisce over 150 episodes of yuletide chaos, Cousin Seth style!

Oh, and don’t forget to give us some holiday cheer with a 5-star rating on iTunes, follow us on Spotify, and check us out on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram at @christmascousinspod. Got questions or favorite moments to share? Email us at christmascousinpod@gmail.com

Audience Question:

What’s up, dudes? It’s spooky season! So that means I’ve got Anthony Caruso from ‘Tis the Podcast with me to talk the Mistress of the Dark! That’s right! This episode is all about Elvira! From MTV specials to comics to her own feature film, we get into all of it!

In “Elvira: Mistress of the Dark,” the goth beauty inherits a decrepit New England mansion and a old recipe book. Spoilers: It’s actually a spell book, and she’s descended from a line of witches. There’s an uptight Puritanical town, an evil warlock uncle, and a group of hormonal teens! When they attempt to burn her at the stake, she conjures a storm to put it out, then tackles her maniacal uncle! Eventually, with her newly inherited money, she finances her own Vegas show!

In Elvira’s Haunted Holidays, the titular heroine plays the Scrooge character and is visited by three ghosts. First, she’s visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past who shows her making bat garland and burning down her schoolhouse. The next ghost shows her New York City’s Christmas spirit which she promptly lambasted for its greed. Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Future shows her a desolate wasteland, which changes her attitude about the holiday. Cue the horror hostess sic’ing a bat on some creeps.

Ancient family spell book? Check. Witty quips and zingers? Uh huh. Dangerous food monster? Only if it’s really gross! So grab your magic ring, hop in your convertible, and take a ride to this episode!

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X’masu here to talk the mutant disco/no wave album “A Christmas Record!” From ZE Records, it was a triumph of experimental Christmas music.

Founded in 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, ZE was one of the most popular rated labels, capturing the emerging New York sound of the period. They gained exposure through a distribution deal with Island Records. In fact, before long they had signed  such acts as Kid Creole, the Waitresses, Was (Not Was), Cristina, and James White. Called “the best independent record label in the world” and “the world’s most fashionable label,” they closed their doors in ‘84.

In 1981, ZE released a Christmas compilation album as a lark. Of course the album is noted for standout alternative tracks “Christmas Wrapping” and “Christmas on Riverside Drive.” Davitt Sigerson’s “It’s a Big Country” is a folksy little ditty that plays as a newsletter of sorts, tucked into a Christmas card. Unfortunately, some of the songs don’t quite hit as hard. Suicide’s “Hey, Lord” is a depressing number and Alan Vega’s “No More Christmas Blues” feels like just the opposite.

Synthesizer? Yep. Funk rhythms? Got ‘em. Bummer Christmas songs? For sure! So grab your record player, put “A Christmas Record,” and listen to this episode!
