Hooray for Christmas!

First up we have this weeks version of A Christmas Carol. It’s an episode of Popular which was a late 90s show about teenagers starring a bunch of actors in their mid to late twenties.
It’s awful, but in a good way.  Or it’s great, but in a bad way.
Watch it here:

Then Bob Baker brings us Do You Hear What I Hear, and I never knew that across they pond they didn’t call a Till a Till.

Then it’s The Quiz. I scored a princely 9 out of 10, let me know how you got on.

After the Joke, Bob returns with Spread A Smile of Joy and he looks at getting involved in your local community. It’s a great way to spread so local good cheer.
Check out Bob’s podcast, Festive Foreigh Film Fans here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then it’s time for Christmas All Over The World, and thanks to listener Jeanie Mulligan we look at a modern Irish tradition of The Late Late Toyshow. Most years it’s the most watched show in the whole of Ireland and it’s delightful.

This episode’s recommendation is the TV show Cougartown starring Courtney Cox. If you’ve never watched it you should give it a binge.

I’ve long believed that if you can’t get a good interview out of the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, you should hang up your keyboard and mic. The Truckers are a richly layered project with the loud guitars and pounding drums used to drive a lot of meatheaded lyrics instead supporting subtle storytelling that deals class and race as well as rock ‘n’ roll. For much of their career, they’ve used their albums to come to grips with the American South as it exists today, but the songs sound like songs, not a sociology textbook.

I caught up with Hood between legs of the “Southern Rock Opera Revised 2024” Tour. Southern Rock Opera put the band on the map in 2001 when it used the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd as the pry bar to get into some of the issues mattered to them. It charted the course for the band since then, so it has a lot of legacy.

I expected the Christmas end of this conversation to be Hood talking about the Christmas songs he likes and his relationship to Christmas music, but while prepping for the interview, I discovered there are two Drive-By Truckers Christmas songs in the world. Those, obviously, get the 12 Songs breakdown as well.

To see if the Southern Rock Opera tour is coming your way, visit DriveByTruckers.com. I wrote about the New Orleans stop on the tour on my Substack page, The Cream.

We bid farewell to barbecue season as Home for the Horrordays continues! This week we’re looking at Mercy Christmas, a horror/comedy about a family whose Christmas tradition is to kidnap unsuspecting victims and have them for Christmas dinner. As in eat them. Because they’re cannibals. Ha ha ha!

Join us as we tell the tale of Michael Briskett (yes), as he wishes for the traditional family Christmas, and gets more than he bargained for.

Bradford gets angry at the family’s poor cooking practices, Joe gets angry at the mountain of missed opportunities, and Johnny-5 was just angry right outta the box. Also we somehow wind up talking about Legos. Like ya do.

Seasons Eatings

When done right, it’s sticky and dense, warmly spiced and distinctively dark in colour. While raisins, suet, brown sugar, spices and brandy can be found in most modern variations, the sweet, cake-like nature of today’s pudding is a far cry from its early incarnations. So grab your fork because we’re going in for a second helping of figgy pudding

This is it, Christmas Cousins—Bold new arrival from Trader Joe’s that left Cousin Chad saying, “What the Seth?!”

In today’s episode, Chad taste-tests a Pumpkin Chardonnay live on air, the latest (and strangest?) fall concoction to grace the shelves. Will it be an unexpected triumph of autumnal innovation, or will it end up in the Hall of Pumpkin Spice Shame?

Cousin Seth watches in suspense, and you’ll be right there with them for every sip—good, bad, or downright terrifying. Could this Pumpkin Chardonnay be the next great seasonal surprise, or is it just gross enough to warrant a public warning? Tune in to find out!

Audience Question:

“Would you be brave enough to try a Pumpkin Chardonnay? And what’s the weirdest pumpkin-flavored item you’ve ever tasted—hit or miss?”

Christmas Cousins

What’s up, dudes? They say the sequels are never as good as the first. I think The Empire Strikes Back proves them wrong…but Band Aid II doesn’t. I have music journalist Alex Rawls from The Twelve Songs of Christmas and My Spilt Milk with me to talk all about the second version of the charity song done in 1989! Spoilers: it’s not as good as the first, but it’s still fun!

On Friday, December 1, 1989, Bob Geldof called Pete Waterman to ask if he would consider producing a new version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” Waterman was part of The Hit Factory, a production team made up of himself, Mike Stock, and Matt Aiken. They were known for hi-NRG or Eurobeat style, with tempos usually somewhere between 102-140bpm, four-to-the-floor kick drums, staccato hi-hat, and bass lines frequently looped with fast eighth or sixteenth notes doubled at the octave. In fact, they produced 13 UK #1 singles and 3 US #1s. Waterman even postponed his wedding and rallied several artists together.

Subsequently, on Sunday, December 3rd, the assembled artists recorded at PWL Studios in South London. Bob Geldof and family were present. On Tuesday, December 5th, the updated version was played for the first time on London’s Capital Radio, 95.8 Capital FM. Advanced sales reached 500,000 copies, and the single was officially released on December 11th. It spent 3 weeks at #1, though Band Aid’s original hit spent 5 weeks at #1 and sold over 2 million copies (which was approximately $24million in sales).

Kylie Minogue? Check. Bros? Yep. Cliff Richard? A little out of place, but he was definitely there! So grab your denim jacket, put on an uptempo kick drum backing track, and jam out to this episode all about Band Aid II!

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

If you want to enjoy a true Middle Eastern Christmas, one with diverse religions and languages, but also filled with historic, cultural, culinary and artistic delights, join the Fans as we head on a festive jaunt to amazing Lebanon.  This is a unique holiday location, with incredible natural beauty, that offers a little something for everyone — ancient Roman ruins and castles, limestone caves, beautiful beaches, and mountainous ski resorts.  It is a well-kept secret and a hidden gift that you didn’t know you needed, but one you should unwrap nonetheless.

We explore a Memory Box filled with journals, notebooks, cassette tapes and photographs. It is the basis for a film that incorporates different media and textures, where still photographs turn into mini-animations to illustrate a story that folds together the past and present.  It begins one snowy Christmas Eve in Canada but flashes back to the Lebanese Civil War of the 1980s and Beirut on the brink of being torn apart.  The box serves as a portal to painful and buried memories and experiences.  Although not exactly common Christmas fodder, this is a deeply personal tale of old friends who still “eat with the dead and the ghosts” of the past.

And yet, when they reunite at the conclusion, now middle-aged and greying, they still can dance to Blondie’s One Way or Another with the same reckless abandon they had as teenagers.  This moving echo of a memory seamlessly melding into modern day Beirut signals a brighter future for all, just as the brilliant sun rises over a reborn city.  It provides a hopeful note that resonates with literal warmth and brightness.  We can’t think of a better message to embrace for Christmas.

Saxophone player Boney James has two Christmas albums, Boney’s Funky Christmas and Christmas Present. Both make sense as the place where jazz and R&B meet, and that was transparently the case when he recorded his first album, Trust, in 1992.

We talk about those early years in addition to his Christmas music, and we discussed having an album of new music in the can that he wasn’t at liberty to talk about or play. Since we recorded the interview, the album’s title–Slow Burn–and its release date were released, along with two songs. It’s due out October 18, and we feature one new song from it, “Butterfly,” with guest spots by Cory Henry and Marcus Miller.

I wrote a piece on James based in part on this interview for My Spilt Milk.

The episode ends with a Christmas song from British punk band/cult fave Helen Love. If anybody knows where I can get an mp3 of this half of a split single, please let me know. The song is too awesome not to be in my collection.
