26 Weeks / 182 days until Christmas! (“What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” Song Battle)

Chrismas Morning

Happy Leon Day! (A day late – sorry about that…)

Today I share a couple of Christmas book recommendations, and read you a cozy Christmas story called Christmas in the Alley by Olive Thorne Miller. Ann is a poor old washer woman with a heart of gold. Her husband is curmudgeon who just wants his tea and pipe. Like many people during the early 1900s they are living in extreme poverty. In spite of that, Ann often helps those in need. On Christmas Eve, she realizes that she has no money to help her and her family celebrate the day. Will there be a Christmas miracle? Probably… but what Ann does with the Christmas miracle really makes this story shine.

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

This episode is our longest and most special.  It is Part 2 of our anniversary show.  We welcome our first guest, author and podcaster Alonso Duralde; we pick our favorite global holiday songs and movies; and, most importantly, we enjoy and celebrate our podcast, and our listeners, and everything new this first year has taught us.  When we started, we were told that our topic was super niche and no one was going to be interested in a discussion of foreign Christmas movies — especially those that are hard-to-find and from obscure countries.  The practical advice would have been to find a topic more relatable to a larger audience.  Instead, we decided to stick with a concept that we care about.  We know our audience is small, but we hope that they engage with us and with the podcast in the same way that we do.  It’s not only about Christmas, or movies, or customs, but it is about basic goodness, spiritual hunger, and human kindness.  We  live in a world divided, and we can be incredibly self-focused and distant from other countries.  We often look through a prism that reflects only ourselves and our experience.  It is our hope that in some small way this podcast can build bridges and break down walls.  Watching international films, you will see a different view of the world.  When we learn to look outside of ourselves and appreciate other cultures, we can accept the unique world around us, and that is the true meaning of Christmas.

Seasons Eatings

This donut shaped treat has its roots way back to the seventh century but emigrated to the United States in the early 1800s.  Its name reminds most of the jolly gift bringer who lives at the North Pole. They can come in many different flavours and colours.  They’ve even become the state pastry of Wisconsin.  We are exploring the history and origins of the kringle.

What’s up, dudes? It’s half way to Christmas, so Merry Halfmas, everyone! To celebrate, I’ve got CJ from Christmas Sessions and Ashley Dunbar from The Magic of the Season with me to talk about the awesomeness that is Dolly Parton! Did you know she had a 1987 variety show? Well, she did, and that show had a Christmas episode: “A Down Home Country Christmas!”

Dolly introduces us to her Christmas show dressed in a Santa suit on the roof of the studio. After sliding down the chimney, her guests Burl Ives and Mac Davis appear on sleds. They all sing a few songs together, “I’ll Be Home with Bells On” and “A Down Home Country Christmas.” Dolly also tell us the story of a very special Christmas in which her dad bought her mom a wedding ring and she got a new baby brother.

Burl sings “A Holly, Jolly Christmas” and Mac sings “Christmas is for Kids.” Dolly reminisces about her first Christmas alone in Nashville, and Mac Davis joins her on guitar. It segues nicely to the show’s staple sketch Dixie’s Place. Socialites Mr. and Mrs. Fulbright’s car breaks down, and they find themselves at Dixie’s. Mr. Fulbright encounters the ghost of Mr. Pruitt, and rediscovers his spirit of Christmas and family.

The show ends in a huge Christmas carol medley with everyone joining in at an icy pond. Dolly, rather than singing us out with “I Will Always Love You,” ends the festivities by singing “Once Upon a Christmas.” She then thanks all her guests and wishes us a merry time.

Puppets? Check. Fake Dolly legs hanging from inside the chimney? Yep. cursed corn husk doll? Definitely! So grab your spoons, play your washboard, and take a sled to this episode!

It’s the final showdown of Bad Sequels Month on Tis the Podcast!

The elves have survived (barely) the cringe-worthy Jingle all the Way 2, the disastrous National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure, and the abysmal A Christmas Story 2. But can they make it through the holiday season with their sanity intact?

This week, they’re tackling the 1997 “masterpiece” (ahem) Home Alone 3 – the one that dared to defy the sacred formula of the original. No Macaulay Culkin? No Catherine O’Hare? No Christopher Columbus? No John Hughes magic? It’s like they wanted to make a bad sequel!

So, will Home Alone 3 be the coal in the elves’ stockings, or can it somehow, miraculously, rise to the challenge and deliver some holiday cheer? Tune in to find out on this hilarious and entertaining episode of Tis the Podcast!
