What’s up, dudes? Remember the Centurions? Kenner released the 7” Centurions line in 1986. The figures had cybernetic Exo-Frames with a number of hardpoints on the surface, onto which the various parts of their Assault Weapon Systems attached. In the accompanying Ruby-Spears cartoon, personnel on the orbiting space station Skyvault beamed the AWS to the team.

London Editions Magazines published Centurions comics in the UK. Despite the vague near future label, the UK comic firmly establishes the year as 2087 in issue #8 in the 4 page story entitled ‘Time Trap.’

In fact, it’s New Year’s Eve 2087, and even on Skyvault the turn of the new year is eagerly awaited. Max, Jake, and Crystal have only 2 ½ minutes before midnight, and Crystal beams Jake up to Skyvault to celebrate the New Year with his friends. Just as Jake is teleported aboard, he discovers everything in a state of suspended animation. Yes, everyone of his friends is frozen in time. Investigating with the space scanner, Jake discovers that time hasn’t stopped, just slowed down almost to a halt. Doc Terror apparently fired a Time Stasis beam at Skyvault causing some sort of time distortion. Not knowing how to operate Skyvault’s defense systems, Jake instead opts to use Ace’s Orbital Interceptor AWS. He’s not used to handling space missions though, and he flies erratically. Fortunately, this prevents Doc Terror from locking his weapons on him. Jake fires a multi-particle missile at Doc Terror’s Flying Fortress, disabling it and shutting down the beam. Free from the time stasis, Crystal beams Jake aboard, and the team ushers in the new year.

Weapons? Check. Teleporters? Yup. Dracula? Umm… So put on your Exo-Frame, yell Power Extreme, and dive into this episode on the Centurions!

A “Sethtrospective”: Cousin Seth’s 101st Birthday Spectacular!!!

Christmas Cousins

Vincent Van Gogh’s classic painting “Starry Night” has, through the years, inspired poets, musicians, and now another gem — this episode’s holiday film from Taiwan.  Mark describes it as the “best film we have reviewed” so far.   It is a heartfelt story based on an illustrated novel, and the film shares the artful imagination of both the painter and the author with its stunning visuals.  The genuine emotional content of the story sparks a discussion between the boys on what elements make for a good Christmas movie.  Although Taiwan is a majority Buddhist and Taoist country, “Starry, Starry Night” creates true Christmas “feels” while dealing with painful issues like bullying, divorce, and death.  However, despite its heavy themes, the movie and its young actors shine as brightly as the night sky that inspires them. The film also includes some fantasy elements that provide for a welcome escape from their unhappy reality.  In addition, we learn about Taiwan’s dazzling Banqiao District with its high-powered projections, digital Christmas trees, and giant Lego Santa.  Plus, we discuss the Dongzhi Festival, celebrated on the winter solstice (December 22), with its sticky rice animals and nine-layer cakes that are offered as a ceremonial sacrifice to honor deceased ancestors.  Join us on a sentimental journey to a land that, like this movie, is colorful, charming, and a bit magical.

During the holiday season hundreds of these treats are made, sometimes by just one household.  Their name can be a bit confusing when first heard.  They have originated in Europe but have settled in America.  It’s the cookie that isn’t called a cookie.  We’re exploring the history and origins of sand tarts.

Chrismas Morning

Happy New Year, Creepazoids! 2024 marks our 10th year of Christmas Creeps, and to celebrate we’re kicking off the year with a show we’ve wanted to do for a long time: Video Game Chat!

This week we’re taking a break from Christmas movies to talk about the best video games we’ve played in 2023. They don’t have to be new games, just games we played in the last year. Them’s the rules.

We realize this episode may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but rest assured our regular programming will resume in February. For now though, please enjoy this ridiculous episode in which we all talk so much about video games that we had to break it up into two parts! (Part 2 coming next week!)

What’s up, dudes? NES was the greatest thing ever in the ’80s! In fact, it was so great they made a feature film about it! I’ve got Mike Westfall of  Advent Calendar House and Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ here with me to dive into the 1989 Fred Savage movie “The Wizard!” It was a December release that capitalized on the Christmas season to help sell video games.

Brothers Corey and Jimmy Woods are being separated by their parents’ divorce. Jimmy is a slightly autistic young boy who has had problems and PTSD ever since his twin sister died at a young age. One day, Corey discovers that Jimmy has a natural talent for playing video games, and the two journey to the West Coast to compete in a video-game championship. They want to prove that Jimmy doesn’t belong in an institution.

Along the way, they evade the adults who are trying to take Jimmy away, especially the bounty hunter Putnam. The duo also meet Haley Brooks from Reno, who helps them scam their way to the big Video Armageddon competition. Jimmy makes it to the finals and even manages to defeat local phenom Lucas. Oh, and he finally gets closure by leaving his most treasured possession at a tourist spot special to him and his sister.

Mega Man 2? Yep. Double Dragon? Uh huh. Super Mario Bros. 3?! Only if you don’t use the Power Glove! So grab your lunchbox, hop on your skateboard, and hitch a ride to this episode on “The Wizard!”

What’s up, dudes? It’s Snow White in the ‘80s, and I’ve got Anthony Caruso from ‘Tis the Podcast with me to talk about it! That’s right. We’re talking “The Charmings” and its 1987 Christmas episode, ‘Yes, Lillian, There Is a Santa Claus!’

It’s Christmas time at the Charmings’ household, and Lillian is Scroogier than ever. She tries to ruin their Christmas spirit with a snowstorm! The Charmings, however, turn disaster into fun, having snowball fights and building snowmen. Even the Magic Mirror is in the holiday mood.

Thoroughly infuriated, Lillian  tells the children that there is no Santa Claus, and is convincing enough that they believe her. Snow White begs her to do the right thing, play Santa, and get gifts for the kids anyway. Lillian has quite a shock when the real Santa arrives at the Charming house and finds no “true believers” left there. Since Santa only delivers gifts to true believers, Lillian has a crisis of conscience. She uses her powers to correct the damage she has done, and get presents for everyone.

Sassy mirror? Check. One of the seven dwarves as a mall elf? Got it. Hip Santa with a leather jacket, jeans, and no beard? Only if he’s played by the waiter from “Scrooged!” So grab your sword, put on your cap, and build your He-Man village to this episode all about “The Charmings!”

Welcome back Christmas Cousins!
The Christmas Cousins are joined by the one and only Alonso Duralde for a festive film faceoff. Remember those five must-watch movies Alonso assigned to Seth in November, his Christmas Movie Starter Kit? Well, it’s judgment day!Did Seth diligently watch them all, or did procrastination get the best of him? Join us as Seth spills the cocoa on his holiday movie marathon…AND we even have another impromptu Egg Nog tasting (it is becoming a rite of passage on the show!).

From heartwarming classics to hidden gems, Seth will share his unfiltered thoughts on each film. Did any of them put him to sleep faster than a post-Thanksgiving dinner nap? Did the Christmas spirit reach full throttle, or did he remain a festive freshman? Alonso will be there to witness the verdict and, of course, offer his expert insights.

It’s a yuletide rendezvous filled with laughter, movie musings, and the unveiling of Seth’s Christmas movie preferences. Join the holiday hilarity as we unwrap the cinematic surprises and see if Alonso’s Christmas Movie Starter Kit passed the ultimate festive test!
