What’s up, dudes? They say the sequels are never as good as the first. I think The Empire Strikes Back proves them wrong…but Band Aid II doesn’t. I have music journalist Alex Rawls from The Twelve Songs of Christmas and My Spilt Milk with me to talk all about the second version of the charity song done in 1989! Spoilers: it’s not as good as the first, but it’s still fun!

On Friday, December 1, 1989, Bob Geldof called Pete Waterman to ask if he would consider producing a new version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” Waterman was part of The Hit Factory, a production team made up of himself, Mike Stock, and Matt Aiken. They were known for hi-NRG or Eurobeat style, with tempos usually somewhere between 102-140bpm, four-to-the-floor kick drums, staccato hi-hat, and bass lines frequently looped with fast eighth or sixteenth notes doubled at the octave. In fact, they produced 13 UK #1 singles and 3 US #1s. Waterman even postponed his wedding and rallied several artists together.

Subsequently, on Sunday, December 3rd, the assembled artists recorded at PWL Studios in South London. Bob Geldof and family were present. On Tuesday, December 5th, the updated version was played for the first time on London’s Capital Radio, 95.8 Capital FM. Advanced sales reached 500,000 copies, and the single was officially released on December 11th. It spent 3 weeks at #1, though Band Aid’s original hit spent 5 weeks at #1 and sold over 2 million copies (which was approximately $24million in sales).

Kylie Minogue? Check. Bros? Yep. Cliff Richard? A little out of place, but he was definitely there! So grab your denim jacket, put on an uptempo kick drum backing track, and jam out to this episode all about Band Aid II!

Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

If you want to enjoy a true Middle Eastern Christmas, one with diverse religions and languages, but also filled with historic, cultural, culinary and artistic delights, join the Fans as we head on a festive jaunt to amazing Lebanon.  This is a unique holiday location, with incredible natural beauty, that offers a little something for everyone — ancient Roman ruins and castles, limestone caves, beautiful beaches, and mountainous ski resorts.  It is a well-kept secret and a hidden gift that you didn’t know you needed, but one you should unwrap nonetheless.

We explore a Memory Box filled with journals, notebooks, cassette tapes and photographs. It is the basis for a film that incorporates different media and textures, where still photographs turn into mini-animations to illustrate a story that folds together the past and present.  It begins one snowy Christmas Eve in Canada but flashes back to the Lebanese Civil War of the 1980s and Beirut on the brink of being torn apart.  The box serves as a portal to painful and buried memories and experiences.  Although not exactly common Christmas fodder, this is a deeply personal tale of old friends who still “eat with the dead and the ghosts” of the past.

And yet, when they reunite at the conclusion, now middle-aged and greying, they still can dance to Blondie’s One Way or Another with the same reckless abandon they had as teenagers.  This moving echo of a memory seamlessly melding into modern day Beirut signals a brighter future for all, just as the brilliant sun rises over a reborn city.  It provides a hopeful note that resonates with literal warmth and brightness.  We can’t think of a better message to embrace for Christmas.

Saxophone player Boney James has two Christmas albums, Boney’s Funky Christmas and Christmas Present. Both make sense as the place where jazz and R&B meet, and that was transparently the case when he recorded his first album, Trust, in 1992.

We talk about those early years in addition to his Christmas music, and we discussed having an album of new music in the can that he wasn’t at liberty to talk about or play. Since we recorded the interview, the album’s title–Slow Burn–and its release date were released, along with two songs. It’s due out October 18, and we feature one new song from it, “Butterfly,” with guest spots by Cory Henry and Marcus Miller.

I wrote a piece on James based in part on this interview for My Spilt Milk.

The episode ends with a Christmas song from British punk band/cult fave Helen Love. If anybody knows where I can get an mp3 of this half of a split single, please let me know. The song is too awesome not to be in my collection.

What’s up, dudes? It’s a “Family Matters” Christmas with Matt Eurich from the TGI Podcast !” Yes, the show focuses on Harriette Winslow, elevator operator and head of security for Larry and Balki’s newspaper, and her family. Of course, it came to be known for breakout character and über-nerd Steve Urkel!

In the season 2 episode Have Yourself A Merry Winslow Christmas, the Winslows are thrilled to learn the Urkels will be away for Christmas. Unfortunately, Steve ends up staying and annoying the Winslows, especially Laura, whom he fancies. When he accidentally breaks her grandmother’s ornament, she berates him and throws him out of the house.

Meanwhile, Rachel enlists Carl’s aid in finding Freddie Teddy for little Richie. He subsequently gets trampled Cabbage Patch Kids-style and is unable to find the doll for her. Afterward, Laura of course changes her mind, and reconciles with Steve, inviting him to spend Christmas with her family. On Christmas Day, Richie finds the Freddie Teddy that Santa delivered, and this “Family Matters” Christmas ends happily ever after.

Funky Franky? Not quite. Fuddy Duddy? That’s not it either. Freddy Teddy? Yep, under the tree. So grab your genuine canvas wallet, tape it to your heart, and Have Yourself A Merry Winslow Christmas!

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! And Happy Labor Day to all of our American Listeners! We hope you’re all having a great long weekend! And we hope you’re all basking in the excitement and happiness of *officially* being in the ‘Ber Months! It is indeed the most wonderful time of the year!

To kick off September, we are closing out Nicktoons’ month by covering the first Christmas episode of “The Fairly Oddparents“! For those watching along at home, that would be Episode 13 of Season 1 entitled “Christmas Every Day”! As you can tell from the title of the episode, the plot of this one deals with a common holiday trope we’ve covered countless time on the show. But do Timmy, Cosmo, and Wanda tackle it in such a way that makes it feel unique and fresh? And how does it compare to the episodes of the “Rugrats“, “Hey Arnold“, and “SpongeBob Squarepants” that the elves tackled over the past few weeks? You’ll just have to tune in to find out!

Trust us when we say that this is one fun and festive episode you want to be sure not to miss! So settle back with your pumpkin spice latte and enjoy! And get excited – because we’ve *officially* entered spooky season, so the next few weeks on the show will be spent delving into Halloween content! Stay tuned!

As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! ❤️🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🔔🚂 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

Hello you beautiful people.
For many years I’ve thought Scrooge’s gift to the Cratchitt family of a huge turkey was ridiculous. How on earth would they cook it in time for their Christmas dinner?
Well greater minds than mine have looked into it and thanks to their brains and research we look at it the feasibility of such a large turkey.
Here’s a link to the full article:
https://infinitequestpodcast.com/extras/f/how-big-was-the-prize-turkey-in-a-christmas-carol

Keeping on the subject of Turkey’s, this episode’s Christmas Not So Classic is Ho Ho Ho (Who’d be a Turkey at Christmas) by Sir Elton John.
It’s not that good, but you can check it out here:

Then, in Do You Hear What I Hear, Bob Baker looks at the word Jelly as used to describe Santa’s belly.

Then it’s The Quiz, I scored a respectable 8. Let me know how you got on.

After the joke Bob returns with Spread A Smile of Joy and he looks at the practice of Jeep Ducking.
Check out Bob’s podcast, Festive Foreign Fans, here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

In Christmas All Over The World we look at the lovely Mexican tradition of Las Posadas, where a procession of people re-enact Joseph and Mary’s attempts to find lodgings.  It’s fun for all the family.

This episode’s recommendation comes from listener Timothy Lewis and it’s called Words Unravelled, a podcast that looks at everything to do with words.

12 Days Pod

Our surf Christmas episode inadvertently laid the groundwork for this week’s, which focuses largely on Calypso Christmas music. New Orleans’ Charlie and the Tropicales released Presents for Everyone, an album of Calypso Christmas songs, in 2023.

This week I’m talking to trombone player and bandleader Charlie Halloran about the album, Calypso Christmas music, Mighty Sparrow, tiki bars, and being a working working musician in New Orleans. We talk briefly about an indispensable Calypso Christmas album, A Calypso Christmas, which includes classic tracks by Lord Kitchener, Lord Nelson, The Mighty Spoiler and more. You can find it in the digital marketplaces.

You can get Presents for Everyone on vinyl on Charlie and the Tropicales’ Bandcamp page, and you can also find a digital version of their new album, Jump Up, which we hear in today’s episode. We also talk about Mighty Sparrow Christmas music, which is available through the digital download stores.

I finish this episode with another New Orleans project, Haunted House Party and music from last year’s The Spirits of Christmas. The DJ-oriented beat tape for the holidays is also available in all formats including vinyl on the Haunted House Party Bandcamp page.
