🎄 Your podcast feed or burst! Join us as we dance joyfully back to 1988 for a very special episode of “Perfect Strangers,” in which Balki invites his grouchy boss to a Christmas Eve party, whether Cousin Larry and their co-workers like it or not.
Shawn Robare and William Bruce West join the party which, despite IMDb’s summary, is not a “Christmas Carol parody.” If anything, Mr. Gorpley’s the Grinch. And hey, a pre-“Family Matters” Harriette Winslow is here! But why isn’t she with her own children?
📺 As of this recording, “The Gift of the Mypiot” (Season 4, Episode 9) is available for free on Pluto TV.

What’s up, dudes? Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps joins me to dive into the 1986 made-for-tv movie “Christmas Eve!” Starring Loretta Young and Rachel’s dad from “Friends,” this melodrama has charm!
Although Amanda Kingsley is now extremely wealthy, she remembers her hardscrabble upbringing. She now spends her time trying to help the less fortunate around her. Conversely, her business-minded son, Andrew, has never wanted for anything, and has become hardhearted. Upon receiving bad medical news, Amanda engages down-at-heel private investigator Morris Huffner to track down Andrew’s three estranged children. She desperately longs for one final family Christmas.
Huffner tracks down the youngest first. He is now a country singer, and vaguely knows the whereabouts of his sister. Of course, Huffner uses the lead to track down the young lady, and seemingly falls for her. Finally, Huffner finds the oldest son, who had dodged the draft by fleeing to Canada. They all come together and force a change of heart on Andrew.
A philanthropic protagonist? Check. A miserly antagonist? Got it. An Alfred Pennyworth-like butler? Definitely! So grab your notebook and track down this episode on “Christmas Eve!”

Title: Christmas Eve (w/ Jeremy Phelps)

We’re in the last weeks before Christmas and I have more interviews than I can handle.
This week starts with a version of “Wonderful Christmas Time” by Twanguero before we get to my interview with Roland Gift, ex of Fine Young Cannibals. He talks about the way a new Chanel ad campaign with Dua Lipa and Blackpink’s Jennie has introduced a new generation to the Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy,” and about FYC40, an compilation of the band’s hits with a second disc of dance remixes.
Gift also mentions the video for “Everybody Knows it’s Christmas.”
I follow that with Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig from Old Crow Medicine Show, who this year released OCMS Xmas, their first Christmas album. There’s a lot of good stuff in that conversation, more than we have time for in this episode, so I’ll revisit it in its entirety next season.
Finally, I talk to Lorin Sklamberg of The Klezmatics about the reissue of their album, Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah, where they added music to lyrics written by Guthrie. Here too, there’s more good stuff than we had time for, so I’ll return to this next conversation next season as well.
One mea culpa: The most embarrassing moment of the season comes in conjunction with this interview because on Apple Music, the song I lead into the conversation with appears as “Ny Psycho Freylekhs.” I pronounced it that way, then realized when I downloaded the song after the introduction had been recorded that it was “NY” as in “New York,” not “Ny” as in the end is nigh. I never feel smart staggering through other languages, but I haven’t felt as dumb as I did when I saw the proper spelling.
The episode ends with music by Haunted House Party from A Strange Daisy Christmas.

This week, Cousin Chad is flying solo—well, as “solo” as one can be when joined by the unstoppable Joe the Christmas Aficionado, who has more Yuletide credentials than Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the entire North Pole HR department combined.
With Cousin Seth out on assignment (or possibly hiding from eggnog), Chad and Joe dive into three of the most consequential events of the season:
Christmas Con 2025 Preview:
Joe reveals his plans, appearances, potential meet-and-greets, and whether he’ll be signing autographs for the tens of thousands of fans who know him as “that wildly monetized YouTuber with great lighting.” Will there be photo ops? Security details? A velvet rope? Who’s he excited to meet? Who’s excited to meet HIM?
Joe’s Imminent, Highly Anticipated Haircut:
Yes, the legend returns. After six long weeks, the world finally gets the answer:
Will Joe’s famously impeccable hair return unchanged… or will he take a bold leap into “pre-Christmas Con chic”?
The stakes?
Global.
Emotional.
Possibly historical.
It’s a fun, fast, festive episode full of laughs, Christmas hype, and the kind of absurdly specific holiday joy we happily deliver to our cousins worldwide!

What’s up, dudes? Duane from Tinsel Tunes is here with me to talk about the 1984 Christmas mega hit “Last Christmas” by Wham! This catchy tune still holds a spot on most terrestrials radio playlists to this day!
Wham! soared onto the charts in ‘84 with several memorable pop songs when George Michael dreamed about having a Christmas hit. One day, while watching football, the melody came to him. Of course, he ran upstairs to his room to record it his idea, and by the end of the night, he had written a killer tune!
Featuring melodic synths and steady drum machines, the final song competed with Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for the UK Christmas #1. The music video boasts cinematic scenery, and tells the story of a jilted love. Of course, it ultimately lost the battle for #1, but Wham! donated the proceeds to famine relief efforts anyway.
Poppy synthesizers? Check. Ugly Christmas jumpers? Got ‘em. Ski resort meet up with your ex and her new boyfriend? Well… so grab your skis, settle in for a cozy Christmas, and jam out to this episode on “Last Christmas!”
