Seasons Eatings

This towering dessert almost resembles a children’s stacking toy and sometimes there’s a prize hidden inside.  Made with just a few ingredients, it can be a bit tricky to make and can sometimes take generations to perfect.  And while its origins may have started in Greece, it has now become a Scandinavian tradition for many families over the holidays.  We’re exploring the history and origins of kransekake.

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House here with me during this Passiontide to talk the Rankin Bass Easter special shown throughout the ’80s, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail”! There’s a hyper-color witch, a time machine, and the longest Easter egg delivering contest ever! If you’re wondering if a French caterpillar with a human head can drive a time machine, the answer is yes!

The Chief Easter Bunny is looking for a replacement. Just as he’s about to name Peter Cottontail his successor, though, mean ol’ Irontail suggests an egg-giving contest to decide. Due to sabotage, Peter oversleeps and Irontail wins! Peter leaves in disgrace, but runs into Seymour S. Sassafras, who lends him a time machine.

Once again Irontail sabotages Peter, and he’s launched into the future rather than the past. Hopping from holiday to holiday, Peter tries to give away his eggs dressed as various holiday mascots. Unfortunately, it seems that no one wants eggs on holidays other than Easter!

Peter is on the verge of success when Irontail uses a spell to turn his eggs green. Distraught, Peter tries one last ditch effort on St. Patrick’s Day, and the green eggs are gleefully welcomed by the Irish revelers! Peter wins the contest, learns a lesson about making food choices and not fibbing, and becomes the new Chief Easter Bunny!

So grab your eggs and paints, dress up like your favorite holiday mascot, and put on this episode on “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” as you drive your yestermorrowmobile!

Welcome to episode 105 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Akiko’s 2007 album, “A White Album.”

I hope you enjoyed “A White Album.” Japanese Jazz from the 1960s was one of the main reasons I started collecting, but a lot of fantastic Christmas Jazz albums have come out of Japan over the past twenty years as well. It’s always fun discovering something new.

Join me back here on the 25th for Akiko’s second Christmas album, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” It features more stripped-down arrangements and puts a lot more focus on Akiko’s vocals. It’s another great album you’re sure to enjoy.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

As a special treat for y’all, enjoy this once Patreon-exclusive episode in which Anthony and Thom are  joined by Ron Hogan – a.k.a. President Hotdog – of “Film Strip Podcast” to discuss the 1993 horror-comedy, “Leprechaun“!

Listen to them alternate between laughing at and express bemusement at this so-awful-its-actually-somewhat-enjoyable holiday film that continues to spawn ever-more ridiculous sequels to this day! Also discussed: leprechaun lore, why more long-running horror franchises don’t pull a “Halloween” 2018, and much, much more!

Trust us when we say, this is one fun bonus episode you want to be sure not to miss! Try As They Will And Try As They Might, Who Steals Me Gold Won’t Live Through The Night! (Leprechaun)

Tis the Podcast'

What’s up, dudes? It’s a St. Patrick’s Day Christmas when Shawn Robare from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and Plastic Rocket Pop and I talk the 1981 Rankin Bass special “The Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold!” Written by Romeo Muller, it was originally conceived as a St. Patrick’s Day special, but was retooled and released in December instead. Oh, and the word Christmas is just thrown into random sentences.

One hundred years ago, two leprechaun clans existed. Their gold, unfortunately, attracted the banshee Old Mag the Hag, who used her shapeshifting abilities to cause a rift between the clans. Blarney Kilakilarney, leader of the gold-mining faction, asks Patrick, Lord of the Leprechauns for help. Subsequently, he tricks Mag into turning to tears, and Blarney plants a pine cone atop her puddle. The pine cone, taken from a tree planted by St. Patrick himself, grows into a beautiful tree. Meanwhile, present day sailor Dinty Doyle chops down the tree to use for Christmas. The oblivious boy accidentally releases the banshee, who immediately resumes her quest for gold. Consequently, Blarney gives the gold to Dinty, who is almost instantly tricked by the banshee into giving it to her. Luckily, she doesn’t reach it by Christmas morning and turns to tears! Weird, right?!

Powerful leprechaun wizard lord? Check. Weather controlling shape shifting banshee? Got it. Brightly colored clogs made by the O’Clogjiggers? Yes, but only if they can be distributed amongst the Irish people! So grab your gold, dig up your Christmas tree, and sail into this episode on “The Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold!”

Total Christmas

Welcome to the episode.
First up our podcast barman Bob Baker looks at the dichotomy of how is Brits use the word ‘chuffed’ in Do You Hear What I Hear.

This episode we look at the Ducktales episode Last Christmas from season 2 of the reboot in 2018.  It’s not really a version of a Christmas Carol but it does feature the 3 ghosts and let me tell you in no uncertain terms it is crap.

Then it’s the quiz.  I scored 8, let me know how you got on.

Then Bob returns with Spread A Smile Of Joy and this one was suggested to us from our Scandinavian American correspondent Benji Pearson.  It’s a good one.

After that it’s Christmas All Over The World and did you know that Saint Nicholas isn’t the only saint who goes around giving gifts at Christmas.  In Greece they have Saint Basil.  He’s no Santa, but it he gets the job done.

This episode’s recommendation was suggested last week by Bob Baker and I had a listen and really enjoyed it.  It’s from Story Corps and they have lots of people sharing uplifting stories of when strangers have done nice things.

Welcome back Christmas Cousins!

Join us for this instant classic…an AMAZING Cadbury-themed episode of the Christmas Cousins Podcast, where we embark on a taste-testing adventure with our festive freshman, Cousin Seth!

By the way, the clip is also on YouTube and highly recommended viewing!!!

As the holiday season transitions from winter to spring, we’re diving into the world of the beloved Cadbury Crème Egg.

In this egg-citing episode, Cousin Chad takes the lead in guiding Cousin Seth through his first-ever Cadbury Crème Egg experience, accompanied by Seth’s son.

With none of them having tasted this iconic treat before, anticipation is high as they prepare for the ultimate taste test.

Cousin Seth, with his trademark nerves and apprehension, is convinced that the Cadbury Crème Egg will taste like eggnog magically encased in chocolate.

Will his prediction hold true, or will the reality be a delightful surprise?

Meanwhile, Cousin Chad can hardly contain his excitement, envisioning this tasting session as a classic moment in Christmas Cousins history, akin to Seth’s legendary first eggnog tasting.

As the taste test unfolds, expect laughter, surprises, and perhaps a few unexpected reactions. Will they fall in love with the Cadbury Crème Egg, or will it leave them scrambling for a glass of water?

Could this tasting session mark a turning point for Seth’s podcasting career, or will it simply add another amusing chapter to the Christmas Cousins saga?

Tune in to discover the outcome of this egg-stravaganza and join us for a joy-filled Easter celebration filled with laughter, camaraderie, and plenty of chocolatey goodness.

Audience Question:
Have you ever tried a Cadbury Crème Egg, and if so, what was your reaction? If not, what Easter treat would you love to taste-test with the Christmas Cousins?
