How do you want to spend Christmas?  If you like to celebrate in a warm and colorful locale with incredible natural beauty, lush beaches, and a stunning rainforest, grab a holiday speedo or thong, because you are going to love this episode.  We heat it up by exploring the joys of Brazil.  We travel to the world’s fifth largest country and learn how they enjoy Christmas — with all of the sexy and smooth vibes of a passionate tango.  We first learn of the fate of Jorge, the star of this episode’s festive foreign film Tudo Bem No Natal Que Vem or “Just Another Christmas”.  He wakes up and every day is Christmas, only he can’t remember the previous year.  It’s like Groundhog Day, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Family Man combined with all of the cultural richness of Brazil.

Next, we learn the secret of the Chester, a meaty Frankenstein meal of big breasts and thighs. And finally, we meet Joyce Moreno, a multi-talented musician, and her Christmas track “O Velhinho” (“The Old Man”).  It is a national favorite, with the traditional bossa nova and samba sounds of Brazil, that deliver both a sophisticated and festive sound.  It’ll be more fun than a bite from the Brazilian Wandering Spider.

Seasons Eatings

This holiday treat was found on the tables of many families during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but now it’s usually found in a few key areas.  The main ingredient was so common, it was called the fast food of the nation.  While the main ingredient has been eaten for millennia, the holiday version has only been around for a few hundred years.  We’re exploring the history and origins of oyster stuffing.

In 2021, I interviewed Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, a band I’ve only grown to appreciate more over the years. They released their first three albums–Cheap TrickIn Color and Heaven Tonight–in 18 months, and Dream Police followed a whole year later. They toured constantly at the time, which makes that productivity all the more impressive.

In 2017, they released a Christmas album, Christmas Christmas, an album that’s easy to like and easier to admire after Petersson talks about the inspirations for the songs.

I talked to Petersson because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers had a new album out, In Another World, and the conversation was a lot about what a band that tours as much as they do does when COVID forces it off the road.

Welcome back Christmas Cousins!

In Episode 137 of the Christmas Cousins Podcast, Cousin Seth and Cousin Chad dive headfirst into Hallmark’s fall movie lineup with Seth’s sophomore journey into the world of Hallmark fall releases.

Armed with a pumpkin spice latte (possibly vegan, probably spiked) and a hefty dose of curiosity, the Cousins discuss the films that have them eager for cozy movie nights and those they might skip entirely.

From the much-anticipated reunion of Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott in “His & Hers” to the spooky vibes of “Haunted Wedding,” they’ll give their unfiltered, fun, and witty take on what Hallmark has in store this fall.

And of course, we’ll catch up with Seth on how he’s handling his second season of Hallmark movie madness. Grab your favorite fall beverage and settle in for a cozy, laugh-filled episode!

Audience Question:

“What’s the Hallmark fall movie you’re most excited about this season? Do you prefer the cozy romances or the spooky surprises? Let us know!”

Hallmark’s Fall Movie Frenzy: Cousin Seth’s Second Season of Hallmark Fall Flicks!

What’s up, dudes? It’s time for another Christmas-adjacent episode! This time, I’ve got the Saturday Morning Mafia with me to talk about “The Princess Bride!” Yep, it’s Christmas time, and Columbo—erm, Peter Falk—reads his sick grandson a fantasy story. There’s fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles… in other words, it doesn’t sound too bad.

Westley the farm boy falls in love with Buttercup. When he goes off to seek fortune to marry her, his ship is lost at sea. Years pass, and Buttercup is now betrothed to Prince Humperdinck. Suddenly, she’s kidnapped by a giant, a Spaniard fencer, and a criminal mastermind. A mysterious man in black eventually rescues and reclaims her, and reveals himself to be her Wesley.

Unfortunately, it’s all a plot to start a war, and Buttercup’s murder will be the inciting scapegoat. Consequently, Westley is mostly killed, and the Spaniard and giant revive him with help from a disgraced Billy Crystal…I mean, Miracle Max. With their assets combined, they bluff their way into the castle, get revenge on all the baddies, and escape to live happily ever after. Oh, and there’s some kissing in it too.

Fred Savage? Yep. Andre the Giant? Got him. Masters of the Universe toys and Santas in the background! Inconceivable!! So grab your sword, put on a holocaust cloak, and hop in your wheelbarrow to this episode on “The Princess Bride!”

Merry Christmas you beautiful people!

It’s a packed episode filled to the brim with Christmas joy.

We start the show with a version of A Christmas Carol from 1913 starring Seymour Hicks.  They’ve made some interesting choices.
You can watch it here:

The Bob Baker explains the difference between a yard and a garden in Do You Hear What I Hear.

This episodes joke comes from the lovely Pamel Wooten. We may have had it before but who cares?

Last week we looked at the Yorkshire Christmas Pie, and this week we look at another Yorkshire tradition.  Christmas cake with cheese.

It’s been two years since we’ve had The Worst Christmas Present Ever segment, so I’ve scoured the internet and found some for you.

Then Bob is back with Spread A Smile of Joy and there are many people who don’t celebrate Christmas, so why not share their holidays.
Check out Bob’s podcast, Festive Foreigh Film Fans, here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then we have The Christmas Quiz.  I scored a respectable 7, see how you get on.

If you want to get in touch I’d love to hear from you.

I don’t usually get to end a conversation on Christmas music with memories of radio legend Art Bell and his late night deep dive into the paranormal, After Dark with Art Bell. But that’s what happened when I talked to Mark Christopher Lee of the British lo-fi indie rock band The Pocket Gods. It took a lot of discipline not to end the show with After Dark’s theme, “Chase” by Giorgio Moroder. Instead, the episode ends with “Merry Christmas to the Drunks, Merry Christmas to the Lovers,” a new-to-me track by the Edinburgh indie band ballboy.

My conversation with Lee on The Pocket Gods covers a lot of ground as we talk about influential British DJ John Peel, Phil Spector, John Cage, and the way Lee morphed the band into a conceptual art project that explored how musicians do and don’t get paid in a streaming ecosystem dominated by Spotify.

Late in the conversation, we talk about Lee’s forays into documentary films. You can find Weird: The Life and Times of a Pocket God, Inspired: The 30-Second Song Movie, God Versus Aliens, and The King of UFOs: Royal UFO Secrets Revealed at Tubitv.com or the Tubi Roku app.

All of the music on today’s show is available at the iTunes Store, but 2021’s A Quantum Christmas Song, which is more than 115 hours long, can only be purchased as a full album and requires more than 8 GB of disc space to download. I think Mark will understand if you choose to stream rather than buy that one.
