Festive Fans Unite! (send us a message)

We thought we could make a joke about what the Festive Fans have in common with this episode’s country.  We like to say it’s because we are tall and long, and we were surprised when our wives agreed, but they said we are tall on appetite and long on belt size.  Ha!  Well, it’s no joking matter, we are off to celebrate in the literal spine of South America – Chile!  It’s a land of beautiful contradictions—long but narrow, with icy glaciers and blazing deserts, where you can ski and surf on the same day.  It’s shaped like a candy cane and sparkles with as many stars as a Christmas tree.  Despite being the Gateway to the Antarctic, Christmas in Chile means sun, surf, and cold cola de mono.

We also review a Chilean movie from 2009 called La Nana, a film that reminds us of the essence of Christmas in its own quiet way.  It carries the spirit of the season hidden inside its narrative, waiting for the audience to realize its warmth.  It may not meet the strict standards of a Christmas movie, but it has all of the elements we associate with the holiday season.  It’s an interesting tale of hope, redemption, and love.

In the end, we love how Chile strives to be different. They don’t say “Feliz Navidad” which is heard throughout the Spanish-speaking countries. The traditional Chilean Christmas greeting is “Felices Pascuas” which also means Easter in Spanish. Go figure.  Also Santa Claus is known as Papa Noel throughout most of Latin America, but he is uniquely known as Viejito Pascuero in Chile. Since Christmas is called “Pascua” in Chile, they called him “Pacuero,” which translates to Old Man Christmas.  Even the holiday food is exceptional.  Pan de Pascua is a fruitcake that people actually want to eat.

Come with us now to discover how Chile is a vibrant fusion of different cultures and traditions — Indigenous roots, Spanish culture, and European influences. This just adds to the richness and spice that makes the holiday season feel magical.  It influences the food and the music and gives Christmas in Chile its own unique flavor.

This dessert takes us to the lush country of Indonesia.  Starting back from over 400 years Dutch colonizers brought their influence to create a dessert using local ingredients and customs.  Baked, but served chilled, this custard is made with everyday items found in the Indonesian kitchen.  We’re exploring the history and origin of klappertart.

What’s up dudes? Adam Pope from Wizards! The Podcast Guide to Comics and The Retro Network (Geekster) and William Bruce West from Remember That Show? and West Week Ever are here to talk “Rubik the Amazing Cube!” Yes, this 1983 show capitalized on the craze of the best selling puzzle toy!

In ‘Rubik’s First Christmas,’ the titular cube is traveling through Mexico for Christmas with the Rodriguezes. Their grandma, the town matriarch, is donating toys to all the children. Unfortunately, the truck is hijacked by two young hoodlums, who eventually give it to two thieving tomb raiders.

While chasing down the culprits, Rubik accidentally gets mixed up and falls out of the truck. The kids save and solve him just in time. Of course, they fly a prop plane to spot the thieves, and Rubik uses his power to trap them. Eventually, through the power of Lisa’s tears, Rubik transports them to the toys, and flies them reindeer-style to be delivered!

Cacti? Yep. Spanglish? Check. Enlarged feet? Only if they’ll stop some thieves! So grab your guayabera, hit your piñata, and summon your omnipotent alien/imp/genie friend to this episode on ‘Rubik’s First Christmas!’

Episode 12 – Signs of the Season at Sam’s Club

Christmas Everyday

These days, we take the all-Christmas radio format for granted. Every year, countless adult contemporary–AC–stations temporarily change their format and go wall to wall with Christmas music somewhere between Halloween and Black Friday. Jerry Ryan gets the credit for pioneering the switch when he was vice president and general manager of KESZ-FM in Phoenix in 1990. Once he did it in a market the size of Phoenix, others followed in his footsteps.

This week, Jerry Ryan tells radio stories, remembering his journey to the holiday season in 1990 and the thought process that led him to all-Christmas radio.

If you’d like more on all-Christmas radio, you can check out a piece I wrote for New Orleans’ Times-Picayune in 2016, and my Twelve Songs episode with Steve Suter, program director for New Orleans’ Magic 101.9. Suter’s Christmas programming runs counter to some of Ryan’s thoughts on the subject, but in other ways his ideas about radio line up nicely.

The episode ends with one of my favorite categories of Christmas song–the holiday adaptation of a seasonal hit. One year, I couldn’t get enough of “Macarena Christmas (Joy Mix),” and this week we’re going back to 1993 when the vocal group H-Town turned the sexy slow jam “Knockin’ da Boots” into “Knockin’ Boots for Christmas” for the holiday season.
