Title: Mid-Century Christmas Morning

Welcome to episode 29 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I discuss Koga Records’ 2020 compilation, “Happy Christmas from Shimokita.” This is a great collection of songs produced during the height of the pandemic last year. It’s a mostly upbeat, optimistic compilation, which makes it stand out from most of the similarly-themed Christmas music I heard last year.

I started collecting Japanese Christmas music close to two years ago now and I’ve managed to get a pretty wide variety of albums. I haven’t covered a lot of contemporary music as of yet, so I was looking forward to this episode. While most of the bands here lean toward Rock or Punk, it’s still a fairly eclectic collection with a diverse blend of styles and sounds.

As I mention in the episode, a couple of the songs have music videos. I really enjoy the video for Moshimo’s “Holy Night.” It conveys a lot of what’s in the lyrics and gives an idea of their energetic performances that have added to their popularity.

Moshimo “Holy Night”

Rocket K “Can’t I Kiss Dear Mr. Santa”

Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoyed “Happy Christmas from Shimokita.” You can find most of the bands on YouTube and social media, so if you like what you heard, be sure to look them up. I’ll be back on the 25th with Ohashi Trio’s 2015 album, “Magic.” Prior to that, though, I’ll be releasing a special patron-sponsored episode thanks to the Ko-fi donations I received last month. Both albums are great, so be sure to check them out.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Any proceeds or donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

TGI Podcast

It’s now October, and that means our Christmas podcast will return in about a month! But first, here’s a Halloween treat.

Growing up, I’d spend a lot of time each Halloween season at Kmart, and I always bought whatever Halloween cassettes they had for sale. Most were terrible, aside from a few classics that still remain on my shelf. But this episode features one of my favorites, The Old Gray Goose.

This tape was released in 1999. It features a guy (the Gray Goose) who tells stories and sings songs. Most of the stories were familiar tales that we’d been telling each other for years, but I hadn’t heard a few of these. Overall, it’s just a really cool collection and is something I still listen to every year.

A few years ago, I hooked up a cassette player to my computer to create these files; however, it seems this was also released on CD, so I really should just track that down. This cassette rip is pretty rough. Still, the times I’ve checked, it hasn’t been the easiest thing to find online, so I figured it’d make a cool podcast post, even with the tape noise.

I didn’t record an intro or anything. I figured people may want to play this with family or at a party, and you don’t need my voice on here messing it up. So it’s simply the two sides of the tape. Here’s the track list:

1 Goose Introduction
2 Shipwreck
3 Medical College
4 Oscar, The Lightheaded Pumpkin
5 The Graveyard
6 The Hike
7 The Passing Of David Holt
8 Ride Of Terror
9 The Butcher
10 Emily’s Nightmare
11 39 Steps & The Blue Room
12 Mystery Church
13 Graveyard Song
14 Goose Farewell

Title: Being Normal Is Vastly Overrated. (Halloweentown)

Happy October everyone! In today’s episode I share a listener’s memory from a cozy farm in Canada and he tells us about how his town welcomes Christmas. Then I head over to Portugal and share a couple of fun Christmas traditions the town of Braga has on Christmas eve. Finally, I read the essay Old Thoughts for Christmas by Christopher Morley. Published during the Christmas season after the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Morley ponders the gift of peace and the need for kindness after such a horrific world war – and finds that Christmas can bring these things to us.

And be sure to keep an eye out on the youtube channel this week as I’ll be posting a video review of the book Mrs. Claus and the Santaland Slayings by Liz Ireland.

North Pole Podcast

The latest episode of the North Pole Podcast has only been online for about 12 hours or so. But the response to it has been robust – even “frenzied” as Elf Hugo in the North Pole Post Office put it.

“We are getting busier but this is way early for this kind of mail,” said Hugo, postmaster at the North Pole. “I listened to the episode and I did not hear anything shocking or surprising in it. But you never know what is going to get people going.”

The episode addresses one of the most common questions we receive here at the North Pole: “How does Santa get around the world in one night?”

Elves Frank Myrrh and Crash Murphy of North Pole Radio News take on the topic. You can hear the podcast at this link.

Elf Crash Murphy says his email has “gone crazy” today. “I normally don’t get a ton of email on a Sunday but today is off the chart for any day of the week. I would say close to 40,000 messages have come in.”

What are they talking about?

“Well, I guess I said something about people who don’t believe in Santa and what I think should happen to them on Christmas morning or something,” Elf Crash said. “I didn’t think it was all that unusual of a question, honestly, but when Frank asked me about them I just said what I thought. I guess a few of them got mad or something. But I have to ask this now – if they don’t believe in Santa Claus, why would they care what I said?”

We do not know it is because of this latest episode of the North Pole Podcast or not, but registrations for Tracker Elves at SantaTrackers.net are exploding today as well.

North Pole Podcast

Elves Frank and Crash take on the difficult question of how Santa gets Around the World in One Night. It is one of the most common questions we get here at the North Pole.

Truth be told, Santa does not really get around the world in one night – it’s more like two days. The world has so many time zones that people just think he does it in one night. We track him from the North Pole every year and the truth is that he is in flight for over 32 to sometimes 48 hours every Christmas.

But of course, Santa delivers in every time zone while people are asleep. As he moves from time zone to time zone he stays in the window the whole way – which takes much more than just one night. It just seems like one night because most people only think of their own time zone, not the time zones of others.

In fact, in this episode Elf Crash tells of a time when he was in school and an inspired teacher tried to get his class to answer the question using math and science.

Crash explains why that is not necessary.

This is a good episode, one that not only answers the question but also an episode that shows how tired elves can get sometimes by just answering this question.

Enjoy!

The ChristmasPodcasts.com Christmas Podcaster Survey is open now to collect thoughts and opinions from Christmas podcasters about the best Christmas podcasts online.

This is part of a new feature to be released at MyMerryChristmas.com later during the month of October.

Christmas podcasters themselves are a very important group in the collection of this information.

If you are a Christmas podcaster please share your opinions via the survey below before October 12th, 2021. Please share this post with other Christmas podcasters you know. We appreciate your help. The most podcasters who respond the better the report will be:
