Closer to Christmas

Welcome back to A Cozy Christmas Podcast! Summer’s heat can make it hard to feel the Christmas spirit, but it’s still there—waiting to be found and shared! In this episode, I talk about how creativity can spread joy—especially Christmas joy—and I take a moment to reflect on Currier & Ives and their timeless winter scenes.

For our story today, I read the first two Christmas chapters of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. The March sisters’ creativity, generosity, and joy shine through—whether in giving to a family in need, receiving an unexpected gift from a kind neighbor, or staging a delightfully chaotic homebased theatre performance. Together, they remind us that the best gifts we give (and receive) are always the most heartfelt.

What’s up, dudes? I’m joined by Nick Bicât, the composer and arranger of the music from the 1984 movie “A Christmas Carol!” We really get into it! Find out about his compositional style  and the inspirations behind some of the musical selections and arrangements! We get it all straight from the man himself!

Nick Bicât has written over 150 scores and soundtracks for film, television, theater, festival events and concert performance. Winner of a BAFTA and twice nominated, his film and television scores include “A Christmas Carol”, “The Scarlet Pimpernel” , Wetherby, and The Reflecting Ski. He has composed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, written eleven musicals and an opera The Knife, with Sir David Hare, (best musical score, 1989 New York Drama Desk Awards). Other collaborators include Tony Bicât, Edward Bond, Adrian Mitchell Howard Brenton and Ted Hughes.

Subsequently, he has composed songs for Deniece Williams and P.J. Harvey. His song Who Will Love Me Now?, sung by P.J. Harvey, was BBC Radio 1 top film song for 1998. Albums include Under the Eye of Heaven (Virgin Classics), with the London Chamber Orchestra. A choral work Beslan/Requiem, recorded by Andrew Parrott and the Taverner Consort, was released in 2014, and has been performed several times, recently at St George’s, Bristol by the Exultate Choir. His latest work Akathistos,  a processional cantata on the Siege of Constantinople of 626 AD, was premiered at St. Stephen Walbrook, London in January 2020.

Catchy carols? Check. Spooky sonorities? Got ‘em. Tipsy choirs? Better grab some brandy! So grab your staff paper, put on the album, and visit the past with this episode!

Total Christmas

Merry Christmas you beautiful people!

It’s a packed episode and we start with The Christmas Quiz. I scored 8, make sure to email me and let me know how you got on.

Next up it’s Where Are You Christmas and this episode Bob Baker takes us to a couple of Christmas shops in Edinburgh (pronounced Eden-burg, if you’re Bob).

This epsisode we have a combination of A Christmas Carol and Yule Logs. There are 3 to choose from and they’re all a bit crap.

This is an audio play adaptation and it’s only part 1 (there are no more parts):

This one is from the horendous version of A Christmas Carol by the BBC and FX:

And this one shows 4 different versions of A Christmas Carol on a tiny screen in the corner of the picture:

Then it’s What The Dickens! and I look at 3 interesting aspects of A Christmas Carol that you may not have noticed before.

Oy! it’s Do You Hear What I Hear? and Bob looks at the word ‘Oy’, which I thought was universal, but turns out I was wrong.

Then it’s one of my Christmas memories and I reminisce about my experiences going caroling singing as a teenager.

I think of this episode of Twelve Songs as a remix, a second pass at the same material with very different results.

In 2003, The Blind Boys of Alabama recorded Go Tell it on the Mountain, an album of gospel and gospel-inflected Christmas music that Omnivore Recordings reissued in 2016. Last season, I talked to the Blind Boys’ guitarist and musical director Joey Williams about the project and how the gospel legends interacted with the musical guests brought in for the album, including Mavis Staples, Tom Waits, and Solomon Burke. He could answer some of those questions, but since some recorded their parts separately including Waits and Chrissie Hynde, there were parts of the story that he couldn’t tell.

That episode is online now, but during the year I found an interview that I had forgotten about with the album’s producer, John Chelew, when the album was released. Since he was a part of those sessions, he could tell stories about Waits, Chrissie Hynde, and George Clinton and the curveballs they threw the group.

With that in mind, I reconstructed this episode. I let the Chelew tape present a new side to the story of Go Tell it on the Mountain, and I went back to Williams to talk about a second Christmas album that the Blind Boys did, Talkin’ Christmas from 2014 in collaboration with Taj Mahal.

The audio of the Chelew recording is not up to my usual standards for the show, but when we talked I didn’t have a podcast or audio use for the interview in mind. It’s the quality I could get from a phone, and I wish I could have talked to Chelew again to get better audio but he died in 2016. I got used to it very quickly and didn’t find it off-putting, and I hope that will be your experience as well.

Episode 11 – Who’s the best Santa, part 2!

Christmas Everyday

What’s up, dudes?  It’s one of the most depressing Christmas movies ever, and also a ripoff of “Pollyanna.” Yes, it’s “Prancer!” I’ve got Santa Ambassador Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio, and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa here to discuss it.

In this 1989 film, 8yro Jessica Riggs believes in Santa Claus. Her father  and older brother  seem to believe she’s too old to do so, and even her best friend Carol has long since given up believing. When Jessica discovers a wounded reindeer in the woods near her home of Three Oaks, Michigan, she’s convinced it’s Prancer, Santa’s missing reindeer. Of course, she becomes determined to take Prancer to a local ridge so Santa can come and retrieve him.

Eventually, she tells a mall Santa she has the reindeer, and her belief becomes a source of  inspiration for the town.  Unfortunately, her dad, facing hard times, sells the animal. As she tries to free it, Jessica falls and injures her head. Her recovery and naïveté move her father, and he helps her return the reindeer to Santa.

Loud out of tune singing? Yup. Cantankerous reclusive widow? Got it. Ambiguous magical ending? Only with golden ‘80s special effects! So grab your copy of Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus, free Prancer, and lead him back to Santa with this episode!
