Welcome to episode 119 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about a selection of Christmas singles from the 1980s.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of songs from 1984. I was hoping to get a couple other 1984-themed episodes out this month, but between my daughters’ school and sports starting back, a severe lack of sleep, and a dozen other crises popping up throughout the month, I was lucky to get this episode out. As usual, I’ll be spending the next few weeks trying to get back on schedule. In the meantime, enjoy the covers and included artwork from this episode’s singles.

1. Tokyo Hot Club Band – A Thorn In Your Eyes

2. Miki Asakura – Hero & Heroine

3. The Checkers – Heartbroken By Julia

4. Momoko Kikuchi – Love Letter On The Snow

5. Yoko Oginome – December Memory

6. Ikue Sakakibara – Lover

7. Kunio Muramasu – X’mas Rock

8. Meiko Nakahara – Meiko’s Special Party Versions

9. Salon Music – Spending Silent Night

Join me next time for Yuzoh Kayama’s 1983 album, “White Christmas.” I’m hoping to have it out the first week of September. Then join me later in the month for a pair of great albums from the 90’s. Up first is Yasuko Agawa’s “Come In Christmas” from 1990. The join me on the 25th for the fantastic compilation, “Winter Gifts Pop” from 1997. They’re both great albums you’re sure to enjoy.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

17 weeks / 119 days until Christmas! (“Merry Christmas Baby” Song Battle)

Chrismas Morning

Welcome back Christmas Cousins!

In classic Christmas Cousins fashion, Cousin Seth and Cousin Chad are doing things a little backward (as always) with their post-start season preview.

Sure, they might have already kicked off Season 4, but who says you can’t preview after the fact? Also, they review what AI is saying about the CCP…turns out, even computers love Cousin Seth!

Join them as they break down all the festive fun, fall frolics, and pumpkin-packed plans you can look forward to this season.

From Trader Joe’s tastings to fall activities that Seth has to tackle, and even a pumpkin beer showdown, this season is shaping up to be a merry mix of seasonal delights.

Oh, and don’t worry—we’re diving into the ultimate fall debate: Dunkin’ vs. Starbucks.

By the way, Cousin Seth gives an update on his quest to have 18 PSLs by Halloween!

Ready to go Falls deep? So are we!

Audience Question:

“What fall activity are you most excited for this season: a pumpkin beer tasting, a cozy Trader Joe’s haul, or a spirited Dunkin’ vs. Starbucks showdown? Let us know!”

Title: Season 4 Preview (Sort Of): AI Reviews The Cousins and Their Totally Timely Rundown
Christmas Cousins

After a long summer off, we’re back to ring in the most wonderful time of the year: Home for the Horrordays!

On this episode we discuss the SyFy Channel original movie Icetastrophe, AKA Christmas Icetastrophe, AKA A Christmas Tale. No matter what you call it, this is a silly Day After Tomorrow knockoff in which a meteor crash lands in a small Washington town and flash freezes everything in sight. It’s up to scientist Alex and townie Charlie Ratchet to save the town, while entrepreneur Crooge struggles to stay alive long enough to save his kids. Ratchet? Crooge? Yeah… It’s one of those. The Christmas Carol connection is tenuous at best.

What’s up, dudes? They’re heroes in a half shell, and they’re green! That means it’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! I’ve got Tim Williams from 80’s Flick Flashback, Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette, and Laramy Wells from Moving Panels here to talk with me about the mutated ninja Michaelangelo. Yes, it’s his Christmas adventure “The Christmas Aliens!”

In this one issue micro-series, Michaelangelo is exploring the streets of New York during the holiday season. He stumbles upon a stray cat that he names Klunk. Mike decides to do some last minute shopping and heads downtown, which is teeming with fellow shoppers. With a  precarious disguise, the ninja goes into a toy shop and amuses himself with different items—much to Klunk’s dismay. Unsurprisingly, the scaredy cat runs off into the alley, and Mikey goes to find him, discovering some thugs hijacking a truck. Or course, the vehicle is full of “Little Orphan Alien” dolls which are going to be donated to an orphanage. The crooks don’t care about good will toward men, and they knock the driver unconscious and steal the truck, dolls and all.

Meanwhile, Klunk cries out and the burglars hear him. Consequently, the street toughs spot Mikey and open fire on him with their handguns. The ninja takes out most of the hoodlums, who freak and flee in the truck. He manages to hop inside the back of the vehicle as it speeds away and get the better of the thieves, deciding to drive the truck to the orphanage himself. Unfortunately, despite his good intentions, the police are looking for the vehicle and when they spot it, a chase ensues. Mikey manages to elude the police, but not before he accidentally destroys public property. Once he’s escaped the fuzz, he stashes the truck away in an alley. The toys will be impounded as evidence, so the orphans won’t receive them in time for Christmas. Mikey gets his brothers to distribute the toys to the orphans.

‘80s punks? Yep. Lots of snowfall? It’s Christmas, after all. Armed robbery? Of course! So put on your Santa suit and mask, grab your nunchucks, and stop some crime to this Ninja Turtle Christmas episode!

How do you want to spend Christmas?  If you like to celebrate in a warm and colorful locale with incredible natural beauty, lush beaches, and a stunning rainforest, grab a holiday speedo or thong, because you are going to love this episode.  We heat it up by exploring the joys of Brazil.  We travel to the world’s fifth largest country and learn how they enjoy Christmas — with all of the sexy and smooth vibes of a passionate tango.  We first learn of the fate of Jorge, the star of this episode’s festive foreign film Tudo Bem No Natal Que Vem or “Just Another Christmas”.  He wakes up and every day is Christmas, only he can’t remember the previous year.  It’s like Groundhog Day, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Family Man combined with all of the cultural richness of Brazil.

Next, we learn the secret of the Chester, a meaty Frankenstein meal of big breasts and thighs. And finally, we meet Joyce Moreno, a multi-talented musician, and her Christmas track “O Velhinho” (“The Old Man”).  It is a national favorite, with the traditional bossa nova and samba sounds of Brazil, that deliver both a sophisticated and festive sound.  It’ll be more fun than a bite from the Brazilian Wandering Spider.

Seasons Eatings

This holiday treat was found on the tables of many families during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but now it’s usually found in a few key areas.  The main ingredient was so common, it was called the fast food of the nation.  While the main ingredient has been eaten for millennia, the holiday version has only been around for a few hundred years.  We’re exploring the history and origins of oyster stuffing.

In 2021, I interviewed Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, a band I’ve only grown to appreciate more over the years. They released their first three albums–Cheap TrickIn Color and Heaven Tonight–in 18 months, and Dream Police followed a whole year later. They toured constantly at the time, which makes that productivity all the more impressive.

In 2017, they released a Christmas album, Christmas Christmas, an album that’s easy to like and easier to admire after Petersson talks about the inspirations for the songs.

I talked to Petersson because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers had a new album out, In Another World, and the conversation was a lot about what a band that tours as much as they do does when COVID forces it off the road.
