Chrismas Morning

Our Christmas story wraps up this week with part 3 of The Burglar and The Blizzard by Alice Miller. Things get tense as the story’s characters enjoy a somewhat tense Christmas dinner. Will Geoffrey be able to get McVey to confess, or will McVey out smart him? Will McVey’s sister discover the truth about him? Will true love (for a woman he just met mere hours ago) triumph? Find out how the story all ends in today’s episode!

Sounds of Christmas

Ken Kessler from the Sounds of Christmas talks to Gerry from the Totally Rad Christmas podcast, Scott from Holly Jolly X’masu podcast and Tim from the Can’t Wait For Xmas podcast about Christmas songs from the last twenty years that they think are classics, or on their way to becoming classics (or, at least, worthy of being considered classics). This is in response to a growing number of posts and blogs over the last few years claiming that there isn’t any good Christmas music being made any more.

Welcome to the show you beautiful people.

This episode starts with a brand new segment called Jack-Ask (which is a terrible name and needs to be changed).  For some reason a listener thinks your host, Jack, is the person to ask for advice on a Christmas dilemma.  What do you do when a guest brings very little food to the table, but takes loads of leftovers when they leave?

Then it’s the triumphant return of Robin Sings (which should really be called Robin and Juno Sing).  We had a request from Bob Baker for the girls to sing Where Are You Christmas, so that’s what they did.

We also had a request from Bob Baker to take a look at the British TV show Old Jack’s Boat which has a lovely Christmas episode.  It’s called The Christmas Quest and it’s a real tearjerker.  I couldn’t find the episode to watch, but you can listen to the story here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/radio/old-jacks-boat-christmas-quest

This episode we have another Yule Log.  This one features Lil Bub an internet famous cat who’s very cute and sits in front of a fire.
If you want to watch it, who am I to stop you.  Here’s a link:

Then we have everyone’s favourite segment What The Dickens.  This episode we talk about why the chapters of a Christmas Carol are called staves, why Scrooge wants to retire to Bedlam and why every idiot who goes around with Merry Christmas on his lips should be buried with a stake of holly through his heart.

This week’s recommendation is anything by the author Bill Bryson.  His books are funny and interesting and they kept me company on my short tour around Wales.

What’s up, dudes? Here’s  something a little different! I’ve got Little #1 here (with Littles #2-3 doing some sound effects) to give a quick outline of a short Christmas story we wrote back when she was a 4yro. She barely remembers writing it even though most of it was her idea. I just tightened up the story a bit and threw in a few ‘80s bits. Anyway, hope you enjoy this quick minisode!

Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics! And Happy May! Can you believe we’re in month five of the year already? We are officially over Halfway to Halloween, which means we’re over Halfway to our beloved ‘Ber Months! On top of which, we’re just under two months from the Halfway point to Christmas – Leon Day! This year is flying, so make sure to enjoy every second of it because we’ll be on that official downward slope before you know it!

This week, the elves travel back to the land of Hallmark Christmas movies to cover the 2020 original, “One Royal Holiday” – one of many that feature a fictional European kingdom that, for some reason or another, features a royal family that sounds British! As longtime listeners of the show will know, Julia, Thom, and Anthony all have a love/hate relationship with Hallmark films. How does this one fare with our hosts? Is it a massive win or a swing and a miss? You’ll just have to tune in to find out! Just make sure to let us know what you think of this film as well, and whether or not you agree or disagree with our takes, on any of our social media pages, all of which you can access at https://linktr.ee/TisThePodcast.com !

In addition, we’d like your help with preparing for our upcoming 5 year (!!!!!) anniversary episode/Christmas in July Spectacular! How, you may ask? Well, much has been said about our list and our rankings over the years – and how low or high some movies are rated, or how harsh or lenient we were with certain specials. Well, now is your chance to weigh in! Because to celebrate our 5 years, we will be hosting “The Oscars” of Christmas movies, dishing out awards such as “Best Movie”, “Best Score”, “Best Lead Actor”, etc. And guess who wants to choose the winners? All of you!

So, if you have a few minutes during your day today, please allow your voice to be heard and cast your votes for your perceived winners of each category at the following link:

https://forms.gle/4mPRDHSfERhRHTEP9 .

You’ll notice that there are a lot of nominees in each category, so there will be two rounds of voting. This initial round will be open until Mid May. After which, you’ll get a chance to vote again on all the same categories that have less nominees, which will be narrowed down and chosen based on this round of voting. Then, on July 25th, you’ll find out who’s won in our joint Christmas in July/Anniversary episode!

In addition, if you have any favorite memories of Tis the Podcast from over the five years, or want to share your thoughts on the show, we’d love you to share those with us via a voice memo/recording so we can play it in the anniversary episode as well! Just make sure to include your name in the recording (Which you can do using the voice memo app on your phone!) and email it to us at elves@tisthepodcast.com.

In the meantime, settle in and enjoy this fun episode that’s full of Christmas warmth and feels! As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! 🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🚂🔔 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

Happy Monday – this episode should have been out sooner but life got too hectic last week and there were some technical dragons to slay. But we’re back with part 2 of Alice Duer Miller’s The Burglar and the Blizzard. This book is actually for April’s reading prompt – stay tuned for next week’s episode for part 3, and I will be announcing our next reading prompt!

I’m calling this episode Baby, It’s Cold Outside – as you’ll find out, these two chapters some time following our main characters up and down a mountain trail during a blizzard.

Was McVey telling the truth – is he living with his sister in a run down cabin or is it some elaborate ploy? Find out in today’s story.

Our pals Niall Flanagan and Dwayne Moloney, co-hosts of the Secret of the Sailor Madness podcast, join us this week to try and make sense of Rankin/Bass’ 1967 Christmas special The Cricket on the Hearth!

Based on Charles Dickens’ other holiday novella, Cricket plays fast and loose with its source material to make it suitable for television. Certain characters get cut out, new ones invented out of whole cloth, and no less than NINE musical numbers to fill up an hour of your valuable holiday viewing time.

It’s nonsensical, it’s absurd, but it’s pure-strain Rankin/Bass. There’s certainly a charm to the madness on display here, and honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.
