A Cozy Christmas'

What’s up, dudes? Duane and Scott from Tinsel Tunes and Randy Anthony from Hip Christmas are with me today to discuss the IRS Records 1987 promotional Christmas compilation and subsequent 1990 commercial release “Just in Time for Christmas.” Both albums are full of alternative artists with quirky, original Christmas songs. Some are very good. Others are great for background music at parties.

I.R.S. Records was a major American record label founded by Miles Copeland—brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland—Jay Boberg, and Carl Grasso in 1979. I.R.S. produced some of the most popular bands of the 1980s, and in particular was known for college rock, new wave and alternative rock artists, including R.E.M., The Go-Go’s, Wall of Voodoo, and Fine Young Cannibals. Their catalog is pretty varied, and they used it to their advantage in 1987 for their “Just In Time For Christmas” promo album!

The album came with a gatefold cardboard sleeve so record executives could pen warm wishes and season’s greetings to each other. And, while the 1990 commercial reissue cassette and cd are readily available, the original ‘87 vinyl is pretty scarce. The album has 7 tracks: 6 originals and 1 contemporary cover of a classic hymn. The 1990 release has 13 tracks: that’s 8 originals and 3 contemporary covers of classic hymns.

TIMBUK3? Yep. Wall of Voodoo? They’re there too. Stewart Copeland? Well, only under the pseudonym Klark Kent!

Just in Time for Christmas (w/ Scott, Duane & Randy)

Welcome to episode 98 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Kayo Ishu’s 1968 album, “Scat Christmas.”

I hope you loved “Scat Christmas” as much as I do. Kayo Ishu is great, and this is one of my favorite Japanese vocal albums. I have a few other albums done in a similar style, including a few with Singers Three, but this is the best of the bunch.

As promised in the episode, here are links to videos of the “11PM Theme.” The second one features a brief shot of Kayo Ishu singing it.

Nippon Television “11PM Theme” 1970s

11PM Theme (Keitaro Miho)

Be sure to join me back here on Christmas day for one of the rarest Japanese Christmas albums out there—Love, Live, Life’s “Rock-In X’mas,” from 1971. It’s truly one of the most mind-blowing Christmas albums ever recorded. Then join me on New Year’s Eve for my 100th episode where, like I do every New Year’s, I’ll be covering a non-Japanese album. This one is a real treat and almost as impressive as Love, Live, Life’s album. I’ll say a little more about it next time.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Old Fezziwig sure knew how to throw an office Christmas party. Dickens’s description of Christmas Eve in Fezziwig’s counting house included vigorous fiddling and elaborate dancing. That style of dance may belong to a bygone time, but it lives on in the annual Great Dickens Christmas Fair. In this special episode, Cathleen Myers joins Christmas Past to explain how Victorians danced their way to Christmas.

What’s up, dudes? AA and CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night join me to dive into 1989’s “Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket!” It’s the “Rogue One” of the One Year War, and it happens at Christmas!

In the final days of the One Year War of UC 0079, a young boy named Al who idolizes war and giant mech suits befriends Zeon special ops member Bernie.  Bernie is part of a cadre of terrorists who have been sent undercover to a neutral space colony to capture the Federation’s new Gundam “Alex”.  When Al finds the soldier and his robot hidden in the forest, the boy quickly agrees to help this new friend, not knowing the soldier is an enemy spy. Al and Bernie become friends with Christina, unaware she’s the pilot of the Earth Federation’s prototype. When Bernie’s mission fails, Zeon leaders plot to nuke the colony on Christmas Day. Not wishing for senseless death, Bernie tries one last ditch effort which results in a battle between his mobile suit and Christina’s. Tragedy follows, and Al is scarred for life.

Cool giant robot suits? Check. Espionage and black ops missions? Got ‘em. Blurred lines between good and evil? Definitely! So hop in your Gundam and fly into this episode about “Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket!”

Hello you beautiful people.
It’s a jam packed episode filled with festive joy.

First up it’s Do You Hear What I Hear and Bob Baker talks about Father Christmas.  These days it’s just another name for Santa, but his origins are very different.

Then it’s Jack Ask and my self-appointed best friend Chris has a a question which isn’t a dilemma, but I answer it anyway.

We haven’t had a yule log for a while but we have one now.  This one is Fireplace for the Home Classic Edition on Netflix.  It’s an hour of a real fire, with a very exciting highlight.
Well worth a look.

Then it’s the quiz and to help answer the questions we have the return of Steven A McKay.  He’s written some great Christmas short stories and he has a podcast. We also play his Christmas song.
Check out his stuff here:
https://stevenamckay.com/

Then it’s another Jack Ask.  This one comes from Adam Parker from the Merry Britsmas Podcast.  Should he decorate his neighbours tree as a festive surprise?
Check out Merry Britsmas:
https://merrybritsmas.podbean.com/

Then it’s some adverts for my merch.  If you want a T-Shirt or similar with the show logo on it, you can buy one here:
https://merrybritsmas.podbean.com/

Also why not read my book.  It’s only for grown-ups but it might make you laugh:

Then we have the triumphant return of Shelli Arnold and Frank the Tank.  They give us a guided tour of their wonderful Christmas village.
I’ve posted pictures on Facebook, you really should have a gander.

This episode version of A Christmas Carol is an old time radio show from 1949. It’s an episode of Richard Diamond Private Detective and it’s alright I suppose.
Have a listen:
https://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/crime/richard-diamond-private-detective/a-contemporary-christmas-carol-1949-12-24

Then we have another song from Adam Kennedy. This one is very funny.
Check out the full album here:
https://adamkennedy.bandcamp.com/album/literally-shrunk-down-and-living-in-my-christmas-village

Then Bob is back with Christmas Everyday.
If you want to have a listen to his show Festive Foreign Film Fans, here it is:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then Ed Daly is back to tell us the story of how he found out about Santa.
Check out Ed’s book, it’s great:

This episode I’m recommending I’m Not Complaining with Robin and Juno.
My two daughters, and possibly the world’s youngest podcasters, host a weekly show where they talk about their lives.

In the late nineteenth century modern postal systems were still coming into their own. Around the turn of the century, many countries, including England, began issuing Christmas themed postage stamps. You might think that America would have been among them, but boy would you be wrong.

In fact, America was one of the last countries to get on board. American Christmas stamps are only a few decades old. And the story there has to do with simple economics and America’s system of government.
