Title: Global Holiday Traditions Redux: Round Two Revelations
Christmas Cousins

Welcome to episode 90 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Yuki Izumine’s 2008 album, “Let It Snow!”

I’ve mentioned before that part of why I started collecting Japanese albums was to find new Christmas Jazz albums. I’ve managed to add a ton of fantastic Jazz to my collection, and they’re some of my favorite albums to share with you. My episodes between now and Christmas will feature more Jazz than normal, including one album that took me over two years to track down, and another that’s considered one of the holiest of Holy Grails among Japanese Christmas albums. So if you’ve enjoyed the Christmas Jazz I’ve covered so far, you’ll really love what I talk about in November and December.

Be sure to join me back here on the 25th for “Christmas Songs” from 2010. It’s a great compilation with some really fun and interesting selections. Then be sure to listen in on November 1st for Christmas Podcast Day, when a bunch of us Christmas podcasters release special episodes to kick off the season and encourage listeners to check out some of the other podcasters out there. My episode will tread somewhat different ground than I normally cover, but you’re sure to enjoy it.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Season’s Greetings, spooky friends! It’s time once again for our favorite season here on Christmas Creeps: HOME FOR THE HORRORDAYS!

Joe’s fiancée Nikki joins us this week to help us break down the Cartoon Network miniseries Over The Garden Wall. It’s a show about two brothers lost in a creepy, antiquated netherworld called The Unknown, and has a very unique perspective on nostalgia, history, and the changing of the seasons.

It’s not really Christmasy, but it’s perfectly in our wheelhouse and ripe for discussion. And discuss it we do, because on this episode we go deep into the hidden meanings and history behind some of the stranger things in this cartoon. We want to ease you into things this season. You can have a little spooky. As a treat!

Seasons Eatings

It’s the spice that tops your holiday eggnog, in your Christmas baking and is even used in medicine.  Discovered in a remote Asian island, this spice has taken over the world.  The seed is actually the source of two different spices.  We’re exploring the history and origin of nutmeg.

What’s up, dudes? Remember Dumbo? Well, he had an early Disney Channel Show, and I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House and Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast with me to break down the (quasi-) Halloween episode! Yes, it’s “Dumbo’s Circus!” Dumbo and friends get into a spooky mood!

Lionel, dressed in a Cobra Kai skeleton costume, surprises Dumbo and Sebastian while they’re doing chores. The creepy attire spurs Dumbo and gang to put on a spooky circus show. Meanwhile, Rinkum and Barnaby are delivering a package and get lost in the woods when their package rolls down a hill.  All the friends put on monster costumes, including a vampire, Jacob Marley Ninja Turtle, banana sheet ghost, and Hamburglar witch. They break up into pairs to head into the deep, dark woods to get supplies for their performance. Barnaby and Rinkum happen upon several of the friends in their macabre garb and are frightened, until they realize the spooks are merely Dumbo et al. After joining them, they do a Thriller  dance to end the show!

Spooky costumes? Check. Misunderstanding? Yep. Blatant ripoff of Michael Jackson? Definitely! So grab your costume, put on your chains, and dance along to this episode all about “Dumbo’s Circus!”

Tis the Podcast

Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics! And Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Canadian friends and family! We are so thankful for all of you and hope that you have an amazing one!

This week, Julia, Thom, and Anthony continue their Spooky Season journey by returning to Woodsboro – or at least the set of Woodsboro at Sunrise Studios – to cover the film, “Scream 3”, which, in the year 2000, was meant to serve as the definitive ending of the “Scream” trilogy/franchise! And joining them on this journey are two huge “Scream” fans – Kendall Farrae of “Two Girls, One Crypt” and (for the first time on the main show!) Lindsey Grelis of “Film Strip Podcast”!

“Scream 3” is the most divisive in this beloved horror franchise with both general audiences and critics alike. What do your five hosts think of it? Is it underrated? Is it secretly good? Is it so bad it’s actually fun? Or is it just plain bad? Needless to say, opinions differ dramatically, and yet – somehow – they all end up on the same page for the most part!

This is one sprawling, fun, interesting conversation full of behind the scenes anecdotes; a discussion about the movie in the context of the “Me Too” movement and what it says about the pressures faced by young actresses in Hollywood; Courtney Cox’s bangs; whether it lives up to the promises of Jamie Kennedy’s Randy regarding what the final chapter of a trilogy entails; a debate on whether the finale’s twist and series retcon works and makes sense; whether the series has jumped the shark and become a parody of itself with this installment; and laughs and quotes galore amongst so much else! Trust us when we say you don’t want to miss this one!

So settle in with your Pumpkin Spiced Latte, put your feet up, relax, and enjoy! As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all!

*NOTE: There are some issues with Thom’s audio this episode. He sounds muffled for large portions of it. We apologize for the quality of his mic and are working to ensure it’s fixed for next week’s episode.*

I recorded this 3 times for some pretty embarassing school-boy errors, and it sounds like I recorded it in a small box.  But it’s here and let’s all be thankful.

First up we have the return of Jack Ask.  I solve the Christmas dilemma of whether or not any of the Harry Potter films can be classed as Christmas films.

Next up it’s our Christmas Not So Classic.  The first ever winner of the UK Pop Idol, Will Young, released a Christmas single in 2019 and though it’s a lovely song it did not become a classic.
Check it out, it’s a nice song:

Then Bob Baker our podcast barman talks about cookies or should that be biscuits?

Next up is What the Dickens, and this episode we talk about Mr Charlie D’s side hustle as a magician.  I kid you not,

Then it’s another version of the Christmas Yule Log.  This one is a tie-in to the film Venom: Let there be Carnage.  The film was absolute trolley and sadly the yule log ain’t much better, but if you want to have a look, here’s a link:

Then Bob is back with a great way to keep feeling festive all year round.  This time it’s Christmas music to help you with your training at the gym.

Then it’s the quiz.  I scored 10 out of 10 because I’m incredibly clever.  What will your score be?

This episode’s recommendation is  The Past and the Curious Podcast.  It’s a great history podcast. They say it’s for kids, but I love it.  Have a listen:

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells with me talking about the made for TV movie “A Hobo’s Christmas!” The Bernard Hughes/Gerald McRaney two-hander does Hallmark better than Hallmark!

Chance Grovner abandoned his family 25yrs earlier in order to find work to support them. With Christmas approaching and his age increasing, Chance leaves his friends to spend one more Christmas with his estranged son Charlie. Despite his anger and resentment, Charlie allows Chance to stay for Christmas to allow his own children to get to know their grandfather. They go skating, pick out a tree, and make hobo stew. As the days go by, they all grow closer, and Chance invites his hobo friends over for a huge family Christmas party! Chance tries to sneak away early in the morning, but Charlie and his kids go after him. Their declaration of love touches Chance, prompting him to leave his hobo lifestyle and stay with his family. Oh, and Charlie gets together with girlfriend for good. Yay, commitment!

Estranged father? Check. Love interest possibly moving away? Yep. Hobo stew? Only Chance’s legendary recipe! So grab your boots, pack up your bindle, and catch a train to this episode on “A Hobo’s Christmas!”

Today is a “Bada Din” – which means Big Day in Hindi.  Mark and Bob explore the movie of the same name, which is the Indian term for Christmas. Bada Din was released in 1998 and is a holiday dance and song spectacle – it features murder, a GQ model-turned-actor, 10-minute chase scenes, and a dreamy music video with spider webs.  Merry Christmas!

The Festive Fans totally enjoy their second holiday musical.  To get into the festive spirit of the movie, Mark and Bob do the whole podcast with backup dancers in colorful parachute pants, sitting on white horses, and distracted by the belly dancers moving throughout the studio. Plus, they decorate with banana and  mango leaves, and place a star lantern on the roof.  All that is missing is that regional go-to Christmas treat — plum pudding, with fermented cashew apples, cudapah almonds, ghee, and royal cumin seeds.  Yum!  Even the Christmas song Jhoomo Nacho admonishes the boys  to “dance and dance happily as Jesus is born today”.  So get up and groove – we are celebrating Christmas Bollywood style!
