Closer to Christmas

Welcome to episode 120 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Yuzoh Kayama’s 1983 album, “White Christmas.”

I hope you enjoyed Yuzoh Kayama’s “White Christmas.” He’s been a massive star in Japan since the 60s. One difficulty I had writing this episode was the fact that there’s such a wealth of information about him. I did my best to cover the highlights, though. I’ll get to his music from the 60s eventually.

I’ll do my best to get caught up before October. I have a couple great albums lined up for the rest of this month. First up is Yasuko Agawa’s “Come In Christmas” from 1990. It’s a wonderful vocal jazz album. After that is the 1997 compilation, “Winter Gift Pops.” It’s one I’ve been looking forward to covering, and you’re sure to enjoy it.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics!

We were going to wait to drop this episode until midway through October, but since life got in the way this week and we didn’t get around to recording our episode on “The Addams Family” – and given the fact this episode is six-and-a-half episodes – we decided to drop this Spooky Season treat now so you have time to listen to it in full before Halloween!

You’ve heard us refer to it a few times already in other episodes, but it’s finally here: The 2024 “Tis the Podcast” Ultimate Horror Movie Bracket!

In this special episode, which is becoming an annual tradition, Anthony is joined by a whole slew of special guests and self-labeled horror aficionados to determine the best horror movie amongst those listed on this year’s bracket, March Madness style! The guests include:

Listen as they debate and argue in real time to determine which horror movies advance through this NCAA-esque scary movie bracket as iconic films are pitted against one another in four different “divisions” for a chance to be named the best horror movie!

  • Are Horror-comedies scary enough to go far?
  • Will Art the Clown or Jigsaw best the other?
  • Does Ghostface stand a chance against Michael Myers in the battle of the Legacy Sequels?
  • Can The Warrens make it all the way again?
  • Is “Lisa Frankenstein” too quirky to defeat “Jennifer’s Body“?
  • Is Pearl a scarier psychopath than little “Orphan” Esther?
  • Do the Predators or the Xenomorphs star in the better prequel film?
  • Will Zombies or Deadites reign supreme in the battle of the remakes?
  • Which found footage franchise will go furthest this year?
  • Is Annabelle or The Nun the scarier monster to get its own spinoff in “The Conjuring“-verse?

All of these questions and much, much more are answered in this extraordinarily fun episode full of quotes, impressions, trivia, nostalgia, serenading, and laughs. This is one you definitely do not want to miss – even if it’ll take you a few sittings to finish it given its length. (That’s What She Said.) But that’s what happens when you get a bunch of scary movie buffs onto a recording together – there’s a lot of passionate gushing and vigorous debate going on here in an episode that took three recordings and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to finish, which is why we’ve decided once again to drop this in your main feed instead of on Patreon.

So settle in with your Pumpkin Spice Lattes, relax, and enjoy! And make sure to let us known on social media what your hosts got right, what they got wrong, and which horror movie you think should have come out on top this year!

As always, thanks for your love and support, y’all! ❤️ 🍂 🎃👻🎅🏻🎄🎁 🦌🦉⛄️🔔🚂 🤶🏻 🎀 ❄️

*Note: As this episode was originally intended for Patreon, there may be some adult language and content in this episode that hasn’t been edited out. So keep that in mind before listening with truly young ears!*

”So, It’s Our Job To Observe The Rules Of The Sequel.” – The 2024 ”Tis the Podcast” Ultimate Horror Movie Bracket

Tis the Podcast'

What’s up, dudes? What if Kevin McCallister had a mullet and was super into Rambo? Now we’ve got “Dial Code Santa Claus” or “Deadly Games” or “Game Over” or “3615 code Père Noël”! Yes, this many-titled French film is bonkers, and I’ve got Jeff and Jay from Horror for the Holidays with me to talk about it!

Thomas is an incredibly intelligent young boy whose mother is a wealthy store manager. On Christmas Eve, he makes contact with a vagrant (escaped mental patient?) through a pre-internet Minitel. Subsequently the vagrant poses as Santa, and even goes so far as to get a job at the manager’s store. He’s summarily dismissed after slapping a child.

Eventually, wanting revenge and to play with Tommy, he hijacks a store can and drives to his house. Tommy, with an out of control mullet and a Rambo attitude, has to defend his house and his diabetic grandfather from the psychotic Santa. He “Home Alone”s his house and with his technological genius, sets up traps to counter the dog-killing intruder. Cut to a Bonnie Tyler song.

Trapdoors? Check. Flocked beard? Got it. Grandpa hiding in a suit of armor like Gossamer from Looney Tunes? For sure! So grab your arm band, load a toy grenade with gunpowder, and stop wacko Santas with this episode on “Dial Code Santa Claus”! Or “Deadly Games,” or…

Hooray for Christmas!

First up we have this weeks version of A Christmas Carol. It’s an episode of Popular which was a late 90s show about teenagers starring a bunch of actors in their mid to late twenties.
It’s awful, but in a good way.  Or it’s great, but in a bad way.
Watch it here:

Then Bob Baker brings us Do You Hear What I Hear, and I never knew that across they pond they didn’t call a Till a Till.

Then it’s The Quiz. I scored a princely 9 out of 10, let me know how you got on.

After the Joke, Bob returns with Spread A Smile of Joy and he looks at getting involved in your local community. It’s a great way to spread so local good cheer.
Check out Bob’s podcast, Festive Foreigh Film Fans here:
https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Then it’s time for Christmas All Over The World, and thanks to listener Jeanie Mulligan we look at a modern Irish tradition of The Late Late Toyshow. Most years it’s the most watched show in the whole of Ireland and it’s delightful.

This episode’s recommendation is the TV show Cougartown starring Courtney Cox. If you’ve never watched it you should give it a binge.

I’ve long believed that if you can’t get a good interview out of the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, you should hang up your keyboard and mic. The Truckers are a richly layered project with the loud guitars and pounding drums used to drive a lot of meatheaded lyrics instead supporting subtle storytelling that deals class and race as well as rock ‘n’ roll. For much of their career, they’ve used their albums to come to grips with the American South as it exists today, but the songs sound like songs, not a sociology textbook.

I caught up with Hood between legs of the “Southern Rock Opera Revised 2024” Tour. Southern Rock Opera put the band on the map in 2001 when it used the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd as the pry bar to get into some of the issues mattered to them. It charted the course for the band since then, so it has a lot of legacy.

I expected the Christmas end of this conversation to be Hood talking about the Christmas songs he likes and his relationship to Christmas music, but while prepping for the interview, I discovered there are two Drive-By Truckers Christmas songs in the world. Those, obviously, get the 12 Songs breakdown as well.

To see if the Southern Rock Opera tour is coming your way, visit DriveByTruckers.com. I wrote about the New Orleans stop on the tour on my Substack page, The Cream.

We bid farewell to barbecue season as Home for the Horrordays continues! This week we’re looking at Mercy Christmas, a horror/comedy about a family whose Christmas tradition is to kidnap unsuspecting victims and have them for Christmas dinner. As in eat them. Because they’re cannibals. Ha ha ha!

Join us as we tell the tale of Michael Briskett (yes), as he wishes for the traditional family Christmas, and gets more than he bargained for.

Bradford gets angry at the family’s poor cooking practices, Joe gets angry at the mountain of missed opportunities, and Johnny-5 was just angry right outta the box. Also we somehow wind up talking about Legos. Like ya do.

Seasons Eatings

When done right, it’s sticky and dense, warmly spiced and distinctively dark in colour. While raisins, suet, brown sugar, spices and brandy can be found in most modern variations, the sweet, cake-like nature of today’s pudding is a far cry from its early incarnations. So grab your fork because we’re going in for a second helping of figgy pudding

This is it, Christmas Cousins—Bold new arrival from Trader Joe’s that left Cousin Chad saying, “What the Seth?!”

In today’s episode, Chad taste-tests a Pumpkin Chardonnay live on air, the latest (and strangest?) fall concoction to grace the shelves. Will it be an unexpected triumph of autumnal innovation, or will it end up in the Hall of Pumpkin Spice Shame?

Cousin Seth watches in suspense, and you’ll be right there with them for every sip—good, bad, or downright terrifying. Could this Pumpkin Chardonnay be the next great seasonal surprise, or is it just gross enough to warrant a public warning? Tune in to find out!

Audience Question:

“Would you be brave enough to try a Pumpkin Chardonnay? And what’s the weirdest pumpkin-flavored item you’ve ever tasted—hit or miss?”
