Sounds of Christmas

Did you miss me?
Cause I missed you.

It’s the first episode of the new year and it’s the usual stuff.

First up we have this episode’s version of A Christmas Carol.  It’s called We Wish You A Mandy Christmas and it is an episode of the BBC TV series Mandy starring Diane Morgan.
I really enjoyed and maybe you will too, here’s a link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQF_iwLKxwk&t=884s

Then we have another Yule  Log.  This one was the ‘Pool Log and it was part of the marketing for the first Deadpool movie.
Check it out:

We have a book review of one of the books my wife bought me for Christmas.  It’s Christmas Jokes for Grumpy Blokes, and I even treat you to one of the jokes from the book.
Here’s a link:

Have you ever heard of the Räuchermann?  Well thanks to Eleri Haney you will after listening to this.  They’re little smoking ornaments made in Germany.
Want to see on in action?  Have a look:

This week’s recommendation is the TV series Mandy which I mentioned earlier.   It’s very funny and the episodes are only 15 minutes long.
You can watch the whole series on the BBC website, and most of the episodes appear to be on YouTube.

Totally Rad Christmas

What’s up, dudes? Great Scott! I’ve got Lucky and Joe from the Now Watch This podcast here to talk the paradoxically awesome “Back to the Future” series and its cartoon Christmas episode, “Dickens of a Christmas”! We get into all of it! Time travel, narrating carolers, hover boards, pick pockets! It’s all in there! Oh, and it’s not Christmas without a savage Godzilla attack! Yes, the shark still looks fake! So turn on your flux capacitor, load up some plutonium, and get up to 88mph for this awesome episode!

Welcome to episode 42 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about Chewing Gum’s wonderful 1974 album, “Christmas Best Hits.”

I’ve been lucky enough to get some fantastic records over the past two years, and this really is one of the best. There’s not a song on the album I don’t enjoy. I also listened to their greatest hits CD while preparing this episode and was impressed by everything I heard. Their earliest music is not only enjoyable, but is all the more impressive when you consider how young Rika and Mami Matsuda were when they started writing and performing.

At first, I didn’t realize that their later singles as Bar Balloon, Lucky Lips and MORE were on the CD. After listening to them, I was surprised they weren’t bigger hits. The sisters showed they could produce City Pop just as fine as the Folk Pop they’d been performing for the previous decade. I tried to find a couple of their later singles on vinyl, but they appear to be fairly scarce.

I hope you were as delighted by Chewing Gum as I was. I’ve been looking forward to covering this album for quite a while. Next month I’m planning on just two new episodes. Join me on the 11th for the 2016 album, “Christmas Songs,” by May J. Then listen in on the 25th as I discuss Chris Hart’s 2015 album, “Christmas Hearts – Winter Gift,” for African-American History Month.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Any proceeds or donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Hello and Merry Christmas… as of today, there are only 11 months until Christmas. I can’t believe we’re almost to the single digits…

Ok, there’s still a lot of time left until Christmas, and I’m excited to be starting season 3!

In today’s episode I share with you one of Charles Dickens’ Christmas short stories, but it’s not as well known as it should be.

The story is called Doctor Marigold, and it tells the tale not of a physician, but of a “cheapjack”. During the Victorian age, a cheapjack was someone who hawks wares from the back of a traveling wagon. They lived by their ability to talk and tell stories and convince people to buy their wares.

Doctor Marigold is a lonely man who adopts a neglected orphan girl who is also deaf and mute. Why he does it, and how he learns to communicate with her are just part of the beautiful moments in this story. The story does get dark, but the light shines brightly by the end.

Season's Eatings

Happy New Year to one and all, and welcome to Season 8 of Christmas Creeps!

We kick off the new year with the little-seen 1987 animated Christmas special Christmas Every Day. Based on an 1892 short story by William Dean Howells, this cartoon seeks to answer the question: What would happen if we celebrated Christmas every single day?

Not only does the situation send one family into crisis, but it also puts a huge strain on the global supply chain, and sends this very podcast into an existential spiral from which we only barely manage to recover!

Behind the Bells

“St Nicholas is not coming this year. Instead, a much darker, ancient spirit. His name is Krampus”

It turns out that Michael Dougherty had wanted to do a scary Christmas movie for a while. Let’s see how his research in Halloween’s Pagen origins lead him to learn more about Krampus

Learn about how Krampus shot in the same studios as Lord of the Rings, how they pulled off ALL the scenes in studio and why even competing with Star Wars didn’t detract it from being a hit!

This week, the elves take a trip back in time to the Golden Age of Cinema to cover the 1945, post-WWII classic, “Christmas in Connecticut.” They also veer off track a bit and talk about some icons we recently lost, what new shows they’re hooked on, and some exciting announcements in the world of Christmas entertainment. Episode E of The Christmas Alphabet Podcast.

Christmas Alphabet is a podcast about Christmas, in alphabetical order. Every two weeks there’s a new episode about Christmas feelings and facts all starting with one letter of the alphabet.
The podcast is written and hosted by Wayne –  an author, broadcaster and Baptist pastor in Manchester, UK.

This time it’s the Epiphany season and all our Christmas-related goodies begin with the letter E.
We start with E for Epiphany. Then there’s E for Elves and Elf the movie and Elf on the Shelf, E is also for Evergreens.
Our E Christmas song is – well it’s a few songs called Emmanuel.
