After many delays Santa finally made the announcement we have been hearing about for days — and, boy! — was it a big one!

The crew of the North Pole Podcast were there and recorded it live…well, sorta. So we’ll let them tell the story of what Santa had to said and not say anything more in our post here. But it is big news and something we’ll be talking about right up until Santa takes off on Christmas Eve.

Sleigh Bells & Mistletoe Christmas #1

Merry Little Podcast

They were years of change and uncertainty. For Christmas, they were years that made Christmas a whole new thing. They were the years of 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1944.

How could these war years make Christmas different?

That’s the topic of this podcast episode which features the stories and letters of real folks who experienced all that Christmas was about at that time.

What would you do, as a young man or young woman aged 19 or 20, away from home for the first time at Christmas with the knowledge that you might never return?

What would you do if you just didn’t know when you would ever be able to return home for Christmas?

What would you do if you were a parent to one of these young people now spending Christmas in harm’s way? How would you feel not knowing if they could ever spend another Christmas with you?

These were the realities for millions of people during these years.

No wonder Christmas was different during this time. And no wonder Christmas was different thereafter, too.

Long before the Babe of Bethlehem was born Christmas was celebrated. In this episode we explore the spiritual and very real celebration of Christmas about Christ…before Christ.

Historians, dependent upon physical evidence and validated truth, are quick to dismiss anything Christmas related before Christ as Pagan. We say not so fast.

The evidence of Christmas before Christ about Christ is abundant. There were witnesses aplenty and in this episode we discuss their story and the evidence they left behind.

Of most curious interest is the case of the Shepherds, those famous night time guardians who so joyously spread the news of Christ’s birth. We know now these were not men of ignorance. They knew about Christ long before the Angels showed up.

We also talk of others who knew as well.

It is time this part of the Christmas story is shared.

Everyone, it seems, is a Christmas music critic these days.

The Christmas season of 2018 has been marked with those emphasizing what they don’t like about Christmas music.

Headlining the news has been the new debate about an old song, Baby It’s Cold Outside. Some are calling it the date rape song.

This despite the fact the song is better than 70 Christmases old.

Politics and movements aside, it should be pointed out that bad Christmas music is a thing. And it has always been a thing.

In this merry episode we go down that road — and share — some awful, no good, very bad Christmas music with you.

You’re welcome. And Merry Christmas.

Becoming an elf and working at the North Pole is the dream of a lot of people.

In this merry episode of the North Pole Podcast you are introduced to Elf Hugo, the postmaster at the North Pole Post Office. You will learn a bit about his story and how he became an elf.

You will learn that the path to elfhood takes a long, long time. Hugo’s story is a good example of that. He worked many years in a hard job that supported his family and he raised his children before he ever became an elf. Then, after becoming an elf, he was put to work in a variety of jobs before he ever got the opportunity to do what he does now.

Elf Hugo is one of the hardest working elves at the North Pole. He is a very good friend of mine. You will never find an elf more devoted to working for Santa or more candid about what it is like to be an elf.

This episode also reveals a little bit about the kind of mail we receive at the North Pole and how some of the elves feel about it.

Rehya StevensGreat new Christmas music is hard to come by even though we are treated to more Christmas music each and every season.

In this merry episode we do some of the dirty work for you and serve up some new music we think you’re going to love. This episode features four great songs — just the tip of the Christmas music iceberg that is the 2018 season. Will we do another episode like this? Stay tuned!

First up is a merry little tune called Crazy for Christmas by the Cooter Boys. Get their song here.

We also feature the snazzy works of Rehya Stevens, from her new album Celebrate.

The song we feature on this episode is called A Christmas Song.

Rehya is an old soul that gives a lot of warm feels with her original stuff. In fact, that’s the charm of this album. It’s orginal Christmas stuff. The merry shines through despite the fact the songs are unknown. Or perhaps because of that fact.

Also in this episode we are thrilled to hear the vocals of Emi Sunshine in a bluegrass tune telling a story of Santa’s reindeer. EmiSunshine has been attracting national attention since she was about nine years old, appearing at music festivals throughout the world, as well as on NBC’s “The Today Show,” “Little Big Shots,” the Grand Ole Opry and elsewhere. Recently, several of her songs were used in the Elvis Presley documentary “The King.”

I won’t spoil the story. But it takes not just a song to tell the story but also an all-new award winning children’s book by Grant Maloy Smith. The book is a first release for Smith but as a recording artist his 2017 album “Dust Bowl – American Stories” was critically acclaimed and rose to the top 10 on Billboard’s Folk/Americana and Country album sales charts.

Plus, there’s a bonus in this can’t miss music-filled episode!

The Northpole Podcast

ThanksgivingThanksgiving at the North Pole is not like Thanksgiving anywhere else.

In this festive episode of the North Pole Podcast Elves Frank, Crash and Sprinkles discuss the grand feast planned for the entire elf community and the famous North Pole Thanksgiving Day Elf Parade, featuring thousands of elves and their trikes.

New to listeners is Elf Sprinkles Flufflemeyer. But she is know unknown to the thousands of North Pole citizens who love food (which is all of them). Sprinkles talks not only food in this episode but also the elements of elf love that go into everything that has to do with food — even cleaning. It is a fascinating look inside the heart of an elf who loves what she does.

If you love Thanksgiving, you’ll love this merry episode.

Secrets of SantaThere was nearly a riot getting elves into the studios of Kringle Radio to hear this session recorded. When elves heard what the topic of this podcast would be they just wanted to be there to hear it for themselves.

It is not because they don’t know the Secrets of Santa. They do.

But they wanted to see who would say what.

This episode features two Santa experts: Elf Agent X, head of North Pole Security and Elf Barbara Wa-wa, a North Pole celebrity reporter who is personal friends with both Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The results of this episode surprised most elves. Elf Holly Berry, hostess of this episode, was pretty disappointed in the outcome. But when Santa heard the finished podcast he said this episode to him is “hilarious”.

Santa wants it published because the podcast turned out to be more about elves than Santa himself.

He thinks you need to see that side of things.

Enjoy!

Christmas StockingThe Christmas stocking and the orange so many of us find in the toe of it every Christmas morning is a source of mystery to many. What is legend, what is myth, what is truth?

There is a cruel rumor going about that for whatever the truth is about the Christmas stocking St. Nicholas had nothing to do with it.

That is, of course, poppycock.

There would be no Christmas stocking without St. Nicholas.

This merry episode dives deep into where the Christmas stocking comes from and it explain the orange in the toe — once and for all.

It is, at the end of the day, a fascinating story of legend. A story worth retelling again and again.

That is, after all, how we got the Christmas stocking in the first place.

We should keep it going.

Elf HolidaysNot only do elves celebrate a lot more holidays than most folks they have their own unique calendar as well. This all-new episode of the North Pole Podcast discusses Elf Holidays and why they celebrate them.

Thank you for the enthusiastic response to our first episode of the North Pole Podcast. If you liked that one we’re sure you will like Elf Al Pyne’s discussion with Elf Dr. Grant Smedley of Southern North Pole University discussing elf holidays.

One of the finer details of this discussion deals with the revelation — for the first time ever in public media — of something called Toyvember.

Santa is a toymaker and his elves are his helpers. Toyvember is a unique period on the elf calendar when Santa dedicates the resources of all his elves specifically for the development of new kinds of toys. Fantastic stuff comes out of Toyvember and in this episode Dr. Smedley shares exactly how Toyvember works and how it fits on the elf calendar.

This kind of discussion is exactly the reason why Santa wanted us to develop a podcast in the first place. This is deep-diving into elf culture at its best. We hope you enjoy it.

The Northpole Podcast

North Pole PodcastIt’s a big historic day here at the North Pole and here on SantaUpdate.com. We’re proud to announce the first episode of the North Pole Podcast.

The North Pole Podcast is an idea we have been exploring for a long, long time. Santa felt it was time we finally do it.

His goal is to use podcasting as a way to reach more people and share more information.

We do not know how many out there listen to podcasts but if what we see here with the North Pole Radio news we share is any indication we think the podcast will be a way to reach a lot more folks.

Especially, uh, older folks.

Let me explain.

Santa has a way of calling any kind of believer a “kid”. He is always saying “The kids will like this” or “We should do this for the kids”. When Santa talks like that he is not always talking about children.

Some of the “kids” who write into the North Pole are really adults. Some are 60 years old or 80 years old even.

Santa thinks some of these older “kids” will be the podcast listeners out there. But we know that children out there will enjoy it too.

The North Pole Podcast will provide new and exciting information about the North Pole. So many have questions about who we as elves are and what it is like to live at the North Pole. They want to know all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes in support of Santa.

That is why the North Pole Podcast is needed.

We hope you enjoy it.

Merry Little Podcast

Christmas PranksChristmas pranks have a way of making the season memorable. From the stocking stuffed with lumps of coal to Christmas trees hung upside-down, the season is full of opportunities for the merry and young at heart.

In this merry episode we scratch the surface of some of the great pranks in Christmas history — some dating back as much as four hundred years. Pranks can be simple — or they can be elaborate.

Do you remember the Legend of the Christmas Pants?

Back in 1964, Larry Kunkel’s mother thought he’d appreciate a nice new pair of moleskin pants.

He didn’t.

Living in Minnesota, the pants were prone to stiffness in the freezing weather of the winter months. So Larry pawned the pants off on his brother-in-law, Roy Collett, as a gift the very next Christmas.

But Roy didn’t care for them either. So he returned the favor and the pants the following Christmas.

For years the brothers exchanged the unwanted pants — but did so in cleverly packaged ways. One year the pants came wrapped in a three foot galvanized pipe. Another year it was put into the glove box of a 1974 Gremlin…which was then crushed into a three foot cube.

Thus goes the tale of one of many classic Christmas pranks.

Pranks can be elaborately planned affairs or spontaneous whims of inspiration. Often, it is an idea taken to an extreme for laughs all around.

Pranking is an old, long standing tradition of Christmas and this episode merely introduces the idea. Look for this topic in depth as part of a new episode of the Merry Podcast over at the Merry Forums.
