The Future of Christmas Present

The future of Christmas present is definitely on the minds of many as we head into the New Year. What just happened? How do we explain the Christmas we just experienced?

Try as we might to predict ahead of time what Christmas 2020 would be like we still have been flooded with feedback about the Christmas we all just went through. For many of us, it was a Christmas unlike any other in our lifetime.

But – it’s not like history has not recorded a Christmas like this.

Humanity at ChristmasIn this episode we look back to the Christmas of 1943 – a dark, unexpected, unusual and isolated Christmas that saw many separated from their families for the first time. Framed by Bing Crosby’s classic, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, the lessons of Christmas 1943 are learned through not only the sacrifices of those in our family past but also of those from every side who found a way for their humanity to command in a time of war.

We share the incredible story of a real combat mission flown over Germany on December 20th, 1943 when an American B-17 bomber commanded by Lt. Charles Brown was shredded by German air defenses and 15 German fighters. The tells the impressions of German Pilot Franz Stigler who couldn’t believe the American plane was in the air. His choices were stark: he could shoot them down and win Germany’s highest wartime honor for aviators or he could risk court martial and certain execution by allowing the B-17 to escape to safety.

It was a story not only of Christmas 1943 but one that took 50 years to resolve when Lt. Brown met Franz Stigler in the 1990s.

The lessons of humanity a there for us to learn from every Christmas. We also share a simple story of a loss we suffered on the Merry Forums – and how the discovery of our simple community taught a grieving daughter a new level of love from her Mother who spent so many years with us online.

This thoughtful episode contemplates but does not predict the Christmas coming to us next.

Instead it projects what Christmas can be — if we can only remember what it is all really about.

We’re back baby!
and don’t pretend you haven’t missed us.

It’s a brand new year and what better way to get the new season off to a start than having some technical problems.  That’s right kids, you’ll be sure to notice some sound issues with this one and there’s a simple explanation. . .   I’m crap.

First off Robin and Juno sing the all time classic Jingle Bells.

Then we have an interview with the wonderful Tilly Smith who runs the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre in Scotland.  To learn a bit more here’s a link:
www.cairngormreindeer.co.uk

This week’s version of A Christmas Carol is the very forgettable (or at least I hope I can forget it) version by Pink Fong.  It’s only 5 minutes long so you may as well have a gander, here’s a link:

The recommendation is The Truth from Radiotopia.  It’s a great podcast and each episode is a different story / radio play.  I highly recommend the episode Naughty or Nice which is about some elves at the North Pole.  Here’s your link:

Season's Eatings - Gingerbread

This humble combination has been a winter holiday favorite, accompanying other delicacies on tables for centuries, but always standing out thanks to a delicious combination of ginger, molasses or honey.  It brings forth images of elaborate architectural wonders or little people adorned with gumdrop buttons.  It’s a food that has traveled the world, created guilds, and singlehandedly saved a small town.  For this serving of Season’s Eatings we’re talking about gingerbread.

Episode 2.1 - Ginji Ito - Winter Wonder Land
Loading
/

Welcome to the first episode of season two of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I kick off 2021 talking about Ginji Ito’s 1983 album, Winter Wonder Land – I Thank You. This winter-themed album contains a trio of Christmas songs. It’s a fun, lighthearted start to the new year.

One thing I discovered as I started collecting Japanese Christmas music was that some of the best songs didn’t come from actual Christmas albums. While some Western artists will occasionally include a Christmas song on a regular album, or a mention Christmas in a song that really has nothing to do with it, having a Christmas song appear on a non-Christmas album appears to be much more common in Japan. The best example of this is Tatsuro Yamashita’s “Christmas Eve.” Arguably the most popular Japanese Christmas song, it came from his album Melodies, which was a straight City Pop album. I think a big part of that has to do with how most Japanese view Christmas as a romantic, secular holiday. While “O Holy Night” isn’t likely to appear on a non-Christmas album, finding a Christmas love song on an album is fairly common.

Winter-themed albums are also fairly common in Japan. With entire albums dedicated to the winter season, it’s even more likely to find a few songs mentioning Christmas or Santa Claus. A couple of the more notable ones are Yumi Matsutoya’s Surf & Snow – Volume One, and Seiko Matsuda’s Snow Garden, both of which produced hugely popular Christmas songs. While I generally stick to more traditional Christmas albums, I’ll eventually devote episodes to a few of these winter or non-Christmas albums, particularly the ones that produced the biggest Christmas hits.

While researching this episode, I couldn’t find much about how Ginji Ito’s albums fared on the charts. I know that several of the songs from Winter Wonder Land remain popular with his fans, but they’re not songs that I ever see included on lists of the most popular Christmas songs in Japan. This album is also almost entirely absent from video sites, such as YouTube and Daily Motion. A friend in Japan was able to find a video for just one of the songs on a Japanese site I’d never heard of. It’s a fun album and I genuinely enjoy each of the songs, so it’s a shame it’s not more accessible. That said, I always like featuring albums that generally can’t be heard elsewhere, and this really fits the bill.

As always, thanks for listening, and I hope this episode helps you start the new year on the right foot. Join me in February for a special episode for Black History Month. There aren’t many Japanese Christmas albums that fit the theme, but noted American saxophonist Sam “The Man” Taylor’s 1968 album, In Christmas, release only in Japan, makes the cut, even if on a technicality. It’s a wonderful album and one you don’t want to miss.

Any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. Any donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Feliz Navidad! A Christmas 2020 Recap
Loading
/

It’s the final episode of the 2020 Christmas season, and we’ve got a full and fun episode ahead.

I read another great memory from our listener Rick… we learn that sometimes gift giving can be a fun, but complicated, process. Then I interview Manny, the host of the Feliz Christmas Merry Navidad podcast and we talk about his podcast, paying it forward, and the magic of Santa.

After that, Gracie and I talk about her Christmas and some of the Teddy Bears she got, a couple of snow storms we experienced, and a (Covid Safe) Christmas surprise trip we were able to take.

I wrap up the first season with some reflections and stats about the show. I am overwhelmed by how you the listeners responded to the show. The show ends with a reading of Susan Noyes Anderson’s poem, “Christmas Past: The Afterglow” which is a fitting end to a wonderful Christmas season.

See you all in a couple of weeks for Season 2!
