Tis the Podcast

Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics!

This week, Kendall Farrae of “Two Girls, One Crypt” joins us for our latest installment of “Christmas Horror Month”! Discussed this week? The 2023 slasher-comedy, “It’s a Wonderful Knife”! While the elves loved “There’s Something in the Barn” and found “The Mean One” so bad it’s good, is there anything redeemable about this week’s film or is it a giant dud? Well…you’ll just have to listen to find out! But one thing’s for sure: bad or not, it’s a really fun discussion, especially with one of our favorite recurring guest hosts!

So settle in, relax, and enjoy this festive, laugh-a-minute episode, which we promise is the perfect way to kick off your week! Enjoy and, as always, thanks for your love and support, y’all!

Holy Crap, You Aren’t The Killer! You’re Telling The Truth! You Don’t Exist! (It’s a Wonderful Knife)

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Jeff C. Smith with me to talk about the dynamic stroke of comedy genius that is 1985’s “Clue!” Jeff is the writer/director/producer of “Who Done It: The Clue Documentary,” and he shared some cool stuff! But waitasec, Gerry! I love the film, but it isn’t a Christmas movie! Well, it was a Christmas season release, premiering in December of ’85!

When six strangers are invited to a mysterious mansion for dinner, murder is on the menu. Mr. Boddy, the host, is blackmailing all of them, from the jealous wife to the adulterous doctor to the maid’s employer. One by one others arrive at the house only to be picked off as they’re implicated as blackmail accomplices. With three different endings, the movie answers the questions of who killed Mr. Boddy, and where, and with what.

“Who Done It: The Clue Documentary” is all about the making of the cult classic. Jeff interviews cast and crew from Leslie Ann Warren and Michael McKean to director Jonathan Lynn. What was the enigmatic fourth ending? How did Jonathan Lynn end up writing the script? Why weren’t the characters wearing the colors of their game counterparts?

Blackmail? Yep. Murder? Of course. Flames on the side of my face? Only if Madeline Kahn is saying it. So grab your revolver, shoot the singing telegram, and run from room to room listening to this episode!

Title: Christmas Songs From Non-Christmas Movies
Sounds of Christmas

Welcome to episode 111 of Holly Jolly X’masu! In this episode, I talk about the 2004 compilation, “Christmas For Anyone?”

I hope you enjoyed “Christmas For Anyone?” I’d say that it’s another of those unassuming albums loaded with a stellar lineup of lesser-known musicians, but that cover is anything other than unassuming. It’s a great collection, though, and one I’d already listened to multiple times before starting on this episode.

Join me back here next week for an album I bought way back in the early days of my collecting. It’s one I’m excited to share, “Christmas Dance Party” by the Tokyo Cuban Boys, from 1966. It’s a Latin-tinged Mood Kayo album, and it’s likely one of the best things you’ll hear all month.

As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know.

Remember, I’ve added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you’d like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I’ve also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I’ll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

It’s another episode and you’re great.
First up we have the quiz, and Adam, the host of Merry Britsmas Podcast has a go. He scored 9, I only scored 7, see how you get on.

Then Bob Baker is here with Do You Hear What I Hear and he discusses the word Sod.
Usually his research is top rate, but this time he makes a bit of an error.  We still love him though.

Then I have a Christmas Book Review.  It’s a short story called Job Warner’s Christmas and it’s by Alger Horatio.  It’s a delightful little story and I think you’ll like it.
Have a read here:
ulib.niu.edu/rarebooks/Alger/DigRepos/jobwarner.html

This episode’s Christmas All Over The World is the legend of The Devil’s Knell from Yorkshire, here in the UK.  It’s a great story.

Next up Bob Baker is back with Spread A Smile of Joy. A lot of people give to charity at Christmas, but maybe think about doing it throughout the year.
Check out Bob’s great podcast, Festive Foreign Film Fans, here:

This episode’s version of A Christmas Carol is another pupper one, this time all the puppets and props are made of cardboard.  It’s a charming affair so give it a look:

Happy May, friends! This week’s show comes to us via listener request. Life is full of twists and turns that you never expect. For instance, we never expected to be talking about the 2017 Netflix film El Camino Christmas this week, but that’s exactly what we’re gonna do!

El Camino Christmas finds a handful of ne’er-do-well drunks, shady cops and innocent bystanders all holed up in a liquor store on Christmas Eve. Life lessons are learned, secrets unearthed, all that good stuff. Perennial Christmas favorite Tim Allen is here to force everyone to sing Christmas carols at gunpoint, which means this is the one Christmas film that accurately captures the way this podcast feels 90% of the time…

What’s up, dudes? I’m running up that hill with Mike and Rusty from Snow in Southtown to talk about Kate: Kate Bush Christmas Special and her song “December Will Be Magic Again!” Released in 1979, it proves that the singer, only 21 at the time, was already a tour de force. A year later she released the Christmas song as a single.

The special is a mix of live performances and choreographed dance to prerecorded music. The live portion was recorded BBC Pebble Mills Studios in front of an audience. The music for the dance was done at EMI Studios in London. After a rotoscoped animated introduction, Kate launches into renditions off “Violin,” Gymnopédie No. 1 by Satie, and “Symphony in Blue.” “Them Heavy People” follows with Kate garbed in sequins. Immediately a trio sings Peter Gabriel’s in, and he serenades the audience with “Here Comes the Flood.” Kate performs “Ran Tan Waltz” then premieres “December Will Be Magic Again” on solo piano. Next comes “The Wedding List” about a vengeful bride and the duet “Another Day” with Peter Gabriel about a failed marriage. Finally, Kate enthralls us with “Egypt,” “The Man with a Child in His Eyes,” and “Don’t Push Your Foot on the Heart Brake.” Does she hop in a garbage can and come out dressed like Sandy from the end of “Grease?” Why, yes. Yes she does.

Stevie Nicks-like flowing black outfit? Yep. Fake beard and “Fiddler on the Roof” getup? Uh huh.  Kate doing interpretative dance superimposed over her playing piano? Definitely! So grab your violin and head to Egypt to this episode about Kate Bush!
