It’s time to get somber as the boys attack “Bastogne” from acclaimed HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (available on HBOMAX). The wartime setting sparks a series of conversations that ultimately leads the hosts to the profound conclusion that war, is bad. But can the Christmas cheer overcome the bloodshed and despair prominently featured in this episode? You’ll have to listen in to find out.
Non-Christmas topics include: war (like lots of talk about war), Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, David Schwimmer, dells, finding humanity in forsaken places, and Jon confusing some Marvel roles.
It’s time to meet the Advent Calendar House’s seasonal Muppets quota as we secretly stroll down Jim Henson’s dark nightmare hall to 1986 to rewatch “The Christmas Toy,” an idea no one has repeated since.
On This Episode:
Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), not dressed right at all.
Adam Jurotich, a wise old bear who’s here to teach us about Christmas, as soon as he’s able to climb to the top of a very large dollhouse, from The Hourchive.
Why the humans heard Meteora fighting chess pieces in the living room, but not every toy throwing a party in the playroom with the lights on across the hall.
The family cat’s name is pronounced like “Ouija,” but the DVD’s captioning spells it “Weegie.”
“The Secret Life of Toys,” the short-lived 1994 sequel series featuring Rugby, Mew, and a few others in a new home with new friends.

I have more fun than is allowed interviewing playwright Sina Skates and Director Alex Ungerman of The Birmingham Children’s Theatre. This year they are not letting COVID stop them from entertaining children and have put together an interactive play called ELVES: The Experience that will be hosted over Zoom. Grace and I will give a review of the play in an upcoming episode, but for now, enjoy this energetic discussion of their play, the theatre, and, of course, Christmas!
Be sure to check out the show notes too as I have a lot of links mentioned in the episode:
This is the film ballet version of A Christmas Carol I was trying to remember. It looks like it is coming out only in movie theaters and I’m not sure where or how to watch it, but the featurette looks amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBXXC3nL56M&t=1s

What’s up, dudes? Holli Cuomo from the NetfliXmas podcast and I dig deep into the Disney produced tv movie “A Mom for Christmas”! There’s mannequins! There’s Santa! There’s…romance? Sort of. It was the time of BIG hair, shoulder pads & skinny ties, glam make-up, MTV and some of the best music that ever came across the radio. In fact, a new trend in music was making its way across the pond from a variety of English & European artists… their hits made a big splash with American audiences. Welcome to New Wave and Alternative Rock. Many of these groups dabbled in holiday music. So take a listen to this chat with Mister West, and discover an alternative look at Xmas music with some under-rated, lesser-known gems you’ll want to add to your holiday playlist.

The boys slip into their finest suits and break out the whiskey to watch “Christmas Comes but Once a Year” from the fourth season of Mad Men (available on Amazon Prime). Do the dastardly deeds of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce put a damper on the holiday proceedings, or will the spirit shine through enough for the hosts to call this a Christmas Classic?
Non-Christmas topics include: trying to address the 60’s of it all, The Rock’s diet, The Men Who Stare at Goats, drinking, men getting what they want, holiday humiliation, office parties, pop psychology, Alison Brie, the greatness of Roger Sterling, tropical vacations, and a game of “my uncle is better than your uncle.”

The Advent Calendar House kicks off another Christmas countdown with the original video game crash, which leaves Santa stranded in Pac-Man’s neighborhood in 1982’s “Christmas Comes to Pacland.”
WARNING: This episode contains spoilers about Santa Claus from 11:25 to 13:30.
On This Episode
Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), apparently necessary police officer in a town named after its own savior.
This might be the first time a Christmas special shows Santa using a computer.
Russi Taylor’s Pac-Baby has the same voice she would later use as Robin in “Muppet Babies.”
No one in Pacland knows about Christmas, yet the Ghost Monsters know “Jingle Bells,” which admittedly isn’t all that Christmassy, so it gets a pass.
Absent from this special is the Ghost Monsters’ boss, Mezmaron, who looks like Darth Vader with his helmet off at the end of “Return of the Jedi.”
Is Pac-Man living in a town where everything is shaped like him the Pac-person equivalent of cartoonists drawing faces or eyes on everything to personify them?

Don’t have a cow, but Scarlett and Holli have a tubular time with Gerry D from Totally Rad Christmas Podcast (the theme song from that podcast is stuck in my head currently). We discuss a crazy conspiracy theory about the dad, the candy cane-eating reindeer, miniature chain saw-wielding nightmare Alvin and the Chipmunk elves, and the E Street Band. Gag me with a spoon, this episode is righteous! Veg out and enjoy.
